In the last couple of years the only reports on AN of successful cash advances from Thai banks have been from @Pib and myself. I enquired at Kasikorn and SCB banks and they said they don't have the terminal to perform the transactions. The terminal looks like those used at normal points of sale and produces a similar looking receipt.

For the password to my password manager I use bits of personal information from decades ago. Then I write down a description of the information that comprises the password. The description will be useless to anyone but me. Former addresses, ex-wife's middle name, old phone #'s... you get the picture I'm sure. I loved LastPass until they said the free version cannot be used on both my mobile and my desktop. So I just exported all my desktop info and created another free LastPass account and then imported the info from the primary account. The second account is used only on my mobile. Since I use LastPass only rarely on my mobile, I update it regularly from my primary LastPass account on the desktop.

I will assume you have created a live Mint installation on a USB stick and hope to just plug into some other computer, boot from the stick and run it. It will most likely run on most Intel based computers that are less than about 8 years old. You will need to be able to access the BIOS and be able to change the normal boot sequence to use the USB stick as the boot drive. It's difficult to give an absolute answer to your question because we don't know the details of the software that was installed on your USB stick.

As of today, Sunday Apr. 9,2023 For transfer from US$ to Thai ฿: The current exchange rate for Wise is 34.165. Wise's effective rate after deducting their .607% fee is 33.958 (34.165 X .99393). The Wise fee I included is the absolute minimum fee they charge. It does not include any fees they charge to fund your transfer from the account at your bank. The current rate from Visa is 34.02. MasterCard's rate is 34.0209. Using the best no fee cards these are the exact rates of exchange you will receive.

I can't say I've seen much lag between the Visa and MC rates in either direction. Of course there are occasional differences. The rates by both are set once per business day. Visa rates change about 7AM Thai time, but MC is earlier than that and is before I get up. I think they define what constitutes a weekend day slightly differently.

So far, I only know that Bangkok bank actually offer "cash advance" from the teller for free. I think Pib said Krungthai does it for a small fee. For convenience I just deposit the money directly into my Bangkok bank savings account. When building our house, I often made a withdrawal from both Schwab and Cap one on the same visit to the bank.
-
The only bummer is they insist I have the money in the account. ????
-
I think the ATM limits are $500 or $1000 at Schwab per day. I think you can raise those by asking Schwab to do so. The limit on teller withdrawals is 15K$ per day.
-
Close... but no cigar. Even the bank staff refer to it as a "cash advance".
-
I think Capital One and Schwab are the only two large institutions that don't have foreign transaction fees on their debit cards. There are also some credit unions that don't.
-
Since we were talking about debit cards..... a teller withdrawal is not actually a "cash advance".... that's just what everyone calls it. It is more accurately identified as an electronic debit with simultaneous foreign exchange. The underlying bank account must already have the funds on deposit... so no "advance".
-
I'm sure you're referring to a credit card, not a debit card. That's a different ball game.
-
As I stated before.... both cards I use don't have foreign transaction fees on any and all transactions in Thailand. Both are still subject to the ATM fee of 220 or 150, but Schwab refunds those fees.
-
I'm not positive, but I think that the foreign transaction fees that are normally charged by debit and credit card issuers are charged on all ATM withdrawals, normal store purchases and cash advances. When an institution doesn't impose foreign transaction fees, then NO foreign transaction has that fee applied.
-
I haven't checked recently. About 18 months ago I compared three methods, Wise, SWIFT and debit card cash advance. SWIFT was better than Wise for amounts above 20K US$, cash advance on debit card (without foreign transaction fees) was best but subject to limits on size due to your banks regulations.
-
I only use two US based debit cards and both of those have no foreign transaction fees. Charles Schwab and Capital One cards have no fees. Schwab will also refund the 220 or 150 ฿ fee charged by ATM's in Thailand.

I think not many Thai banks do teller "cash advance" (using debit card) for free or at all. @Pib and I can verify that Bangkok bank provides this service for free. @Pib also mentioned another Thai bank that does the transaction but charges a small fee. Kasikorn and SCB do not offer cash advances at the teller. I'm pretty sure that you will get the exact same exchange rate at the ATM and teller, but the maximum withdrawal is generally much larger at the teller. The rate is adjusted once per day and not at all on weekends. I can only verify this is true for US based accounts. https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert-currency.html

Perhaps one of your ancestors wasn't thrown into the volcano because someone noticed that it didn't work. Isn't observation (AKA science) grand? -
Bank Savings Interest Rates 2023
gamb00ler replied to kiko11's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
In a regular savings account, for every 800 ฿ on deposit for the entire year, you should receive 1 ฿ in each of June and December. Maybe you blinked and missed it.????
