WISE Fees
gamb00ler replied to happydreamer's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Do you have the details of the bank fees that are charged for SWIFT transfers to Thailand from the country where your funds originate? If so, it's very simple to compute the effective exchange rate of a SWIFT transfer and then compare to Wise's effective exchange rate. Have you already done that calculation? -
monitoring solar production/potential

Just a guestimate would be great. Hopefully I could generate a notification to partially compensate for my frequent lack of attention to such details. -
They're probably made of silicon, not rubber. I have both bread and muffin pans in silicon but have been without an oven until recently. Soon, I'll resume making bread but this time without an automatic bread machine.

More censorship ... YouTube's algorism hiding info
gamb00ler replied to KhunLA's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
The real issue with YT's algorithm is that it makes it harder to use the proper method of countering misinformation. IMHO, the proper method of countering misinformation is to drown it out, water it down, with correct information. However, once someone clicks on the ever present content from Miss Info, YT determines that is what this customer wants and then spoon feeds them more from Miss Info. So my suggestion to YT is to rate the content as to its accuracy and if that rating is low, then present more titles to the viewer that have a higher accuracy rating. Make the suckers go digging for Miss Info. -

monitoring solar production/potential

There are time flexible loads that I would use, such as laundry (especially the electric dryer), ironing, etc. I sometimes pre-cool the portion of the house our son and DIL will want to cool off when they get home from work. Our house is fairly well insulated so the pre-cooling can be effective for a few hours. You make a good point about needing to pay attention to the potential for cloud cover or rain to reduce PV output. -
monitoring solar production/potential

Could I get a simple device to measure the sun's observable brightness that will produce an output that can be periodically (ever second?) sampled by computer? By using that light meter one should be able to relate that to your solar production. Once you calculate the appropriate conversion factor from light meter to solar production one could accurately predict what the solar installation could produce at each meter sample time. -

Thanks for that link. It is a great example of the free work that many internet users do to provide convenient summaries to the public. -
If you're using the LA Thai consulate, perhaps there is a Thai business in Thai Town that could help you in this situation. There used to be a small Thai service business right across the street from the LA consulate that offered many services for reasonable fees. Ask the consulate if they know any method to get the $$ to them from Thailand.

How important is a routine for you
gamb00ler replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
The last 25 years of working, I was self-employed and had very few tasks that had to be done at a certain time on a certain day. My work did not require that I follow a routine. I lived in the city with a true 24 X 7 lifestyle... Las Vegas. Most of my "work" time was spent doing analysis and accounting at home on my computer. All those years of no routine has given me a bad procrastination problem. Oh well, I can worry about that tomorrow! -
I agree.... prepare for numerous invasions in unexpected quarters.

Climate change: July set to be world's warmest month on record

This is a great honeypot thread! Facts vs fantasy at its finest. I've learned a lot about unsound debate tactics. Many of the questionable tactics are described here: https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/logical-fallacies My future reading on AN will be much more enjoyable after the hopelessly misinformed self-identified herein are relegated to the round file. Thank you one and all for one of the most useful AN threads. -
Congratulations.... I think you found the worst method to send money to Thailand! Send US$ to Thailand and the Thai bank will give you a better rate than a US based would. Ask all the US financial institutions you utilize if they can send funds to Thailand without the use of an intermediary. If none can do so, find a new US bank that can. Charles Schwab charges $25 and doesn't need an intermediary bank. There are other advantages to using Schwab. All Thai banks charge 100฿ to 500฿ max. to receive an inbound SWIFT transfer. Last time I checked Wise was better than using SWIFT if you are sending less than about 21,000 US$. Above that amount and SWIFT was generally better.

You had repeated COVID antibody tests that were negative? Many people had it but had zero symptoms and only found out via antibody tests. How are you sure that you never had it?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. That item is still available on Lazada and I was wondering if you recommend it 2 years on. Thanks.

Prior to this I've done 23 (I counted them!) cash advances at 4 different BKK bank branches, 3 of them in CM malls. I never had an issue before other than the clerk hit the wrong button once on the machine and the transaction was rejected. The bank employee's explanation of the rejection seems to be somewhat reasonable. The clerk who actually served me said they never do a cash advance on debit cards and send the customer to the ATM and it works there because "the ATM works faster or something"... LOL.
-
UPDATE: I was surprised today when I went to do a teller cash advance using my USA debit card at Bangkok bank. They said they cannot do a cash advance on debit cards, only on credit cards. I told them I've done it many times and showed them the slips from the last one in June. Still no dice! I asked them to call their telephone help line and they did so while I waited. The customer service rep told me that this particular BKK bank branch (Hang Dong Big C mall) doesn't have a manager on duty so they cannot offer the cash advance on foreign debit cards. By this time, I couldn't make it to a bigger branch before it closed. If you're refused ask them to direct you to the closest branch that has a manager on duty.

I should have read this before buying 5 Karats for our multi-generation household. The Karats flush fine but perhaps a little more swirling action to prevent the building up of stains (minerals?) from the poor quality community water. https://toiletfound.com/best-flushing-toilet-criteria/

Where to find whole cooked roast/rotisserie chicken?

I have seen rotisserie chicken in Big C in Hang Dong. All I remember about the price is that it didn't seem unreasonable. -

Like all human endeavors, "science" began with very few facts but was driven by human curiosity. Slowly, the human race has collected a huge store of scientific knowledge. Climate science didn't begin any differently, so many initial analysis were off the mark and even dead wrong. Are you one of those that don't really understand how humans are continually refining their "scientific" description of how the physical world works? Are you trapped in the '70's?
