  1. I think Amazon pre pay all the taxes and duties so you shouldn't have to declare anything. I often get an email from them that they are refunding me some money because the duties weren't as high as anticipated.
  2. I have also recently been trying to help an elderly techophobe with his banking on moving to Thailand. I have tried to gently drag him into the modern age of internet banking while at the same time trying to assuage some of his fears of losing all his money through a scam. Set up two Thai bank accounts. One to keep funds without a card, another with a card for daily spending. Transfer small sums to keep the card working. Has got himself a smartphone and familiarising himself with the banking apps. Both UK and Thai I mention this because you might have to do something similar with your neighbour. Not sure if this would be an option, but one of these Standard International Accounts might be of use. One has a minimum deposit of £2000. I don't know if they come with a cheque book. https://international.standardbank.com/international/personal/products-and-services/bank/international-bank-accounts What you get: An international bank account available in GBP, USD, EUR and AUD Unlimited deposits and withdrawals when banking at home or abroad A Private Banking Visa debit card with no annual fee * Access to international savings accounts and foreign exchange Standing Orders on all accounts and and Direct Debits on sterling accounts Internet banking to make international payments and transfers and manage your account Mobile banking to manage, view activity and link and transfer funds between your accounts Join the popular UCount Rewards Programme if you choose
  3. When I read the title, I had a vision of farmers all wearing bright yellow washing up gloves. ????
  4. Sounds like Khun Ratchaporn is expecting financial support for independant hotels. The reason many of them closed is because they were indebted to the banks and couldn't pay their loans when Covid hit. Mass transport networks? Such as what? Trains? Bus services? Dream on. pre Covid, they had a small bus service from the airport. That stopped. I have recently seen the buses parked up here and there, but don't think the service has restarted. So many other problems need fixing first. Electricity, water, waste disposal, sewage, flooded roads whenever heavy rain. They can't even get the traffic lights to work.
  5. Really? Just like that? Either badly translated or some information missing.
  6. I hate the oily feeling of suncream. I did use Banana Boat SPF50 for a while, but then found a Nivea SPF50 that was also oil free. Or at least didn't give that oily sticky feeling.
  7. Michelle Yeoh was on the Graham Norton Show a couple of weeks ago. Apparently her mother pushed her to enter the Miss Malaysia Contest and she won. But what surprised me most was that she did her own motorcycle stunts in a movie with Jackie Chan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyKA3FPcPAM
  8. There are gullible people everywhere. She might just have been desperate for someone to be with.
  9. Seeing as you are looking for more options, you could try using Wise. presuming you have a Thai bank account. If you have internet banking, you may be able to transfer to Wise in the UK, then let them send the money to your bank account here.
  10. Not disturbing at all. I just couldn't find a sarcasm emoticon. What is more disturbing is that you might actually think that Thai drivers are no worse than drivers from countries where the majority actually obey the rules of the road.
  11. While I can understand Russian men wanting to avoid conscription. The term refugee is a bit strong. Russia is not at war, but engaging in a 'Special Military Operation.' So many coming that they have pushed property rental rates up 300% in Phuket? And now own a large portion of the condo market there? The same in other tourist centres. They don't sound like refugees to me. Not even economic migrants. Well off expats is perhaps more accurate. And let's face it. Thailand isn't doing this out of the goodness of their heart. This is a money boost.
  12. When I saw the title "I like Thigh food", I thought this was about one of those Nyotaimori restaurants in Bangkok.
  13. We might all be guilty of breaking some road rules, but Thais are in a different class. You only have to look at the history and number of accidents here. People smashing into parked vehicles at high speed, smashing into vehicles stopped at traffic lights, driving on the wrong side of the road. They seem to have a total lack of spatial awareness.
  14. With the numbers of them driving in the dark without lights, I presume they have far better night vision.
  15. Someone might have a very dangerous door stop. I hope the authorities are as diligent as the Aussies were in looking for their lost capsule. This one is a bit bigger.
  16. Certainly seeing a lot of the "Item Packed", then nothing happens for ages.
  17. $21 for hotel and $14 for food / day? They must be really living it up.
  18. Taxi is easier if travelling with heavy luggage, and tired after a long journey. Just sit back and relax. But I suppose it depends on the route taken by the taxi driver and the traffic. 17:30 is rush hour. If they come in on the Expressway and exit by Asok or Ploenchit, you could get stuck in heavy traffic for a while. Train will require a couple of changes on BTS I think and you still might have to get a taxi at the other end. Personally, I would take this train option: Train to Makkasan, change to MRT to Silom, exit and take a taxi from there.
  19. I thought they asked for a Council Tax bill. Things must have changed since I last applied.
  20. I had two retinal tears diagnosed while having a check up at Rutnin. The doctor took me upstairs immediately and repaired them both with laser. After treatment, I left the hospital, and even managed to catch my flight back to Samui. No exercise or anything strenuous for a month, then back for a check up. Next check up in June. I think everything, eye test, check up and laser treatment came to about 15,000THB. Might be cheaper than flying back to Moorfields. After all, Rutnin is an eye hospital as well.
