Borderline chaos: Malaysian tourists banned from entering Thailand
dddave replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Typical clickbait headline "Malaysians Banned from Entering Thailand" rather than the far more accurate "Malaysians Denied Permission to Exit Malaysia at Thai Border Crossing" I remember an American friend who legitimately worked in Thailand was stopped at BKK airport from boarding an international flight because the immigration computer showed he owed back taxes. Took him a few days to sort out and get the overdue taxes resolved. -
Baht becoming ridiculously strong

One thing I'm not 100% clear on. I believe you have to be able to show the replenishment funds came from an overseas account, just like the original B800K, but, as I said, not 100% certain. -
Out of curiosity, I once bit on an unordered COD of 30 Baht. Inside a roll of very thin, useless trash bags. I then began regularly receiving COD's of ever increasing amounts up to several thousand baht all of which I declined. It stopped after a few months

I'm not posting this as a "The Sky is Falling" panic notice but users of generic Android TV boxes should give this a scan, especially if you store any credit or debit card information on the box for services payment. It seems the boxes that use the unlicensed Google services version are thought to be vulnerable. https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/09/researchers-still-dont-know-how-1-3-million-android-streaming-boxes-were-backdoored/

Quality sofa in Bangkok, maybe built in Bangkok - where to get one?
dddave replied to OneMoreFarang's topic in General Topics
More than 20 years ago, a friend bought an EKTORP 3 cushion sofa At Ikea, close to B20,000 at the time. For 15 years it was the prime sports and movie watching sofa for a group of his friends as he was the first to invest in a 75" TV. When he moved back to the US, the sofa went to another Bangkok friend who still uses it daily: still comfortable and tight after 20+ years of hard use. I always wanted one myself and early last year noticed that IKEA was discontinuing the model and was selling it for B11,000. I bought one (solid color, floral print covers are extra) and love it. Truly large enough for 3 people to comfortably sit, long and comfortable enough for a guest to sleep on without scrunching-up. Design is rather plain: great example of function over form. Worth checking if IKEA still has any for sale. -
Are either of these oral medications for toenail fungus available in Thailand?

Some baht buses will reverse their route at Soi Chiyaphreuk where the one-way restriction terminates. They often do this when they have no or very few ongoing passengers.

Not true. You can draw up to 400,000 baht off your deposit 90 days after issuance of the extension. It must be fully replenished at least 60 days prior to next renewal. -
One of the benefits of Jomtien is it has enough undeveloped open ground to absorb a lot of torrential rain water, thus floods are rare. Pattaya is so overdeveloped and paved over that there is no place for water to go except as run-off into the streets.

Washing machine repair - where there is a will there's a way.
dddave replied to up2you2's topic in The Electrical Forum
More than 15 years ago, I bought a small TOSHIBA 6.5kg top load automatic washer. B5999. Probably 4 or 5 loads a week. In those 15 years, one B500 repair. I finally had to replace it a few months ago, not because anything wrong mechanically but the plastic control panel on the top had deteriorated from direct sunlight on the balcony and was becoming unusable. I replaced it with the updated but nearly identical TOSHIBA model, still B5999. -
When I had to wear elastic bandages on my leg after an infection, I found that using double stick tape between winds of the bandage at slippage points like the knee worked very well and kept the bandage in place even while walking.

Anybody know if the Bangkok branch of Amorn in Fortune Tower is still open? It's always been in a location pretty far apart from the other electronic shops, far down the hallway. I forget 3rd or 4th floor. I used to browse there often, buying odds and ends but over the last 10 years the quality of what they sold started going downhill and became mostly cheap Chinese junk. I would guess that the fairly sudden emergence of "Mr. DIY" stores everywhere, which carry a lot of the same stuff was the final nail.

Not really. Lazada gives you 7 days to return which is not much time. Once the return window is past, there is not a lot of recourse. I had a problem with the WINDOWS-11 version on a GENMACHINE I purchased. GENMACHINE customer service was very responsive sending me a new WIN-11 key immediately. Often, Lazada products will say "30 Day Warranty" but making good on that can lead to a run-around. Lazada says to contact seller, seller says to contact Lazada....

Indian Gang Violence in Pattaya Sparks Public Concern [Video]
dddave replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Indian gangs have been present in Thailand for hundreds of years. Bangkok has seen any number of high-profile murders between Indian gangs over the years. Old line Indian families control almost all the land of Lower Sukhumvit in Bangkok, including Nana Plaza. -

A friend who made two business trips to Brazil every year would usually take his Thai GF as well. She loved it and fit right in there. Most of their time spent in the provinces as his business involved the pulp-paper industry. She especially loved the variety of fruit but he would always have to buy a little portable gas stove and a wok because she found local food boring and distasteful.

They recently opened a "Raffles Hotel" in Boston of all places. Super high end in a city legendary for high room prices. A local reviewer noted the same as you: Singapore Slings out of a jug, poured 10 at a time at over $25 a pop.

It appears that the most successful beer bars around Jomtien are targeted at a specific nationality and serve as a local base for visitors from that country.

Many years ago, I bought into a piece of a NanaPlaza bar. When going over the financials with the owner, I noted there was no notation about local "Public Relations":, ie, greasing police and other's palms. I was honestly shocked when he told me in his three years of operating the bar, he had never once been asked for any kind of bribe. The local cop who patrolled Nana Plaza at the time would stop by from time to time and perhaps sip a complimentary drink or two, but that was it. Same with two person's I knew who had Pattaya bars, one near soi Buakhao and one in Jomtien. Both told me they had never been asked for any kind of bribe. Again, maybe a few free drinks when officials stopped by, but never a brown envelope.

"A Rose by any other name would smell as sweet" "Rose" is a popular name used by many local women. OP will perhaps need to narrow it down a bit more.
