The OP clearly stated thar as an employee of NHS, his coverage was terminated when he retired. Keeping it was not an option.

In 20+ years here has happened to me probably less that ten times. If staff indicate a table I don't want, most often when smokers are nearby, I just go to the one I do want. I can't ever recall being refused. Not that unusual in the US actually, especially in high-end restaurants where desirable tables are saved for regulars and celebs.

OPs machine appears similar to my Toshiba 6.5kg top loader that I bought 15 years ago and just replaced this past week with a similar model. 15 years and only one small repair by a local electrical repair shop that came by and replaced the broken part: B400 all in. Original 6'5 kg machine was B5000 at the time. My new Toshiba, now rated at 8kg was the same price as 15 years ago: B5000 (+250 del. & set-up)

Luxury Porsche worth over 10 million baht catches fire in Bangkok
dddave replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
As the one time owner of a small fleet of trucks and warehouses, I would emphasize this above all other things. More people die or are severely physically compromised for the remainder of their lives by smoke and toxic fumes than by fire itself. Structures and equipment can be replaced, human lives can not. No hero's allowed. -
Luxury Porsche worth over 10 million baht catches fire in Bangkok
dddave replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
It's become a major issue in NYC as many e-bike owners haul them to upstairs apartments when not in use, over 100 fires in the last year alone attributed to e-bikes. Four people died recently when an e-bike shop burst into flames which quickly spread to apartments above. Seems the lithium-ion batteries are being blamed for most of the fires. Look for a whole raft of regulations regarding all e-transport tech in the near future. -
British Expat Arrested For Punching and Killing Russian Man
dddave replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
In the US, a lot depends on whether one is charged with voluntary on involuntary manslaughter. In this case, "voluntary is basically "in the heat of passion, under circumstances that would cause a reasonable person to become emotionally or mentally disturbed to the point that they cannot reasonably control their emotions." "Involuntary manslaughter" is when death is caused by reckless or negligent behavior with no intention to cause seriously injury or to kill. Both often lead to sentences of time served and probation unless a repeat offense. -
"there are Christian denominated cremation site but most Christian churches just move the body to Buddhist crematorium after the service at their church" My friend was not a practicing Catholic but had grown up in the church and some of his family members were still practicing Catholics. We were able to arrange for both the traditional Buddhist ceremony and a local Catholic priest to be in attendance. It was all very low key but worked out very well. We were able to live stream the service to the family in the US and they found it to be very moving and appropriate.

Singapore turbulent flight: Aussie survivor’s desperate plea
dddave replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
There is a lot of skepticism among pilots and some experts about the "Turbulence" cause. Flight Radar 24 and some similar sites have noted that is a very popular airway and no other flights reported anything more than the routine bumps the flight had 15 minutes before the incident. What they have noted is that there was not the least bumpiness prior to the plunge and no radar indication. It's emerging that the plunge started just as the pilots, using autopilot, started descent for Bangkok. This is awfully close to the profile of the other 737 incidents that grounded the entire fleet for 2 years and caused at least two flights to crash. I imaging Boeing officials are doing everything they can to contain this speculation. Wouldn't be surprised if they try to take control of all of the flight data like they did in Kenya. -
Worth noting: a friend who did the HA treatment found it to be quite effective for 7-8 months. I don't recall which brand he received but it was 3 injections. He lives in Samut Sakhon, somewhat outside of Bangkok and though I can't quote the exact figure, he paid considerably less for the treatment there than what Bangkok hospitals were quoting.

Passengers of air turbulence-hit flight arrive in Singapore

Singapore Airlines is one of the world's best run airlines. They will take care of medical claims quickly and very quietly. -
I've been dealing with arthritic knees for nearly 20 years now. They generally don't get better though recent stem cell treatments have been promising. Most sufferers opt eventually for knee replacement surgery. I have risk factors that made double replacement too risky. I get along OK but can not walk for long distances. I do get some relief from periodic cortisone injections but the effect is temporary and too frequent use of cortisone (a steroid) has harmful effects on bone. If OP is handy to the Pattaya area, I have found Dr. Rudjasorn at the Rudjasorn clinic to be one of the best orthopedic Doctors I have ever consulted with. His English is excellent and he answers questions willingly. I would highly recommend OP have him do an evaluation of your knees and discuss with him how to deal with it in the future. The clinic is an evening clinic opening most days at 5pm as he practices at local hospitals during daytime. https://pattayaorthopaedics.com/

A friend purchased an Ikea "EKTORP" 3 cushion fabric sofa 20 years ago and it was one of the most comfortable sofas I had sat on. It was also long enough for a person to sleep on. Twelve years later he returned to the US and gave the sofa to another friend who is still using it and it has held up well. The removable sofa cover stands up to cleaning very well. Just this year, I also bought an Ektorp sofa from Ikea. They are discontinuing it for some reason and the price was a a bargain B11,000 (without cover). I don't know if they still have any in stock but they are great sofas and hold-up very well. There is also a 2 cushion version. https://www.ikea.com/th/th/p/ektorp-3-seat-sofa-kilanda-light-beige-s49509011/

"Lucky Home" in Samrong is a huge, 3 warehouse "Japan" store that sells container loads of used Japanese goods every month. There is one warehouse dedicated to audio gear and they even have a testing bench where you can test before you leave. There is also half a warehouse dedicated to camera gear, at least 10,000 old cameras(Many kaput) It is not dirt cheap. They know the worth ot the goods but there are bargains and values to be had. About 1KM from the Samrong BTS

Man murders drinking friend with concrete block after argument
dddave replied to webfact's topic in Isaan News
Yes, concrete evidence to that effect. -
I'm curious. If an individual lands at an international airport but is denied entry at PP control, then they have never officially entered the country. Is it the same with goods? If the phone never passed customs, is it officially in Thailand thus requiring an export license or in limbo land, not having passed customs, thus able to be returned to sender without an export license?

Lease Takeover A Good Idea?
dddave replied to JimTripper's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
Is the deal with the existing lease holder or the owner (or his agent) of the unit? If with the existing lease holder, you would have no legal standing unless his lease specifically permits sub-leasing which every standard Thai lease I've seen expressly prohibits. Very risky. -
I just bought an inexpensive smart TV for a friend living in a rural area. She will probably only view the broadcast digital stations. Are the outdoor antennas significantly better in weak signal areas than the small indoor ones? I use an indoor one with no problem but I'm in an urban area with generally strong signals.

Aussie Woman Reveals Harrowing Tales from Infamous Thai Prison
dddave replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News

Why do I always get dandruff after a few weeks of being in Thailand?
dddave replied to DPat's topic in Health and Medicine
"Scabies" is very prevalent in Thailand and can look like dandruff. Easily contacted on hotel linens. a barbers unsterilized comb, a motorcycle taxi helmet, etc. There are special medicated shampoos but they are hard to get rid off. -
I wish Fuji-Xerox still made consumer level printers. Seven years ago, I bought the cheapest 3-in-1 lazar printer IT City sold: a B1900 Fuji-Xerox model that is still operating now without ever having an issue. Also never had a problem with aftermarket toner cartridges.
