  1. You'd have better luck in Vegas with a handle in your hand.
  2. Been going to Vietnam every year for 15 years. Last time was with a 90 day tourist visa this past November. I always enjoy my time there-people, food, great scenery. That said, I'm always glad to leave after 3 weeks. (90 day visa wasn't necessary). Coming back to Thailand after Vietnam is like coming back to the States. Its just got better infrastructure and more food choices. Health care is way better, too. Maybe in a few more years, it will catch up to Thailand but that comes with a pricetag. The rustic charm of the old Vietnam is slowly fading unless you get out of the cities.
  3. Top of the soi is away from Sukhomvit. Walk it or take a moto.
  4. Another vote for Siam Pharmacy. In addition to what's been already said, there's a Skytrain escalator almost right outside their door. Couldn't be easier.
  5. Sciatica and a twisted ankle forced me into getting a cane recently. Siam Pharmacy on Ploen Chit in BKK has a few different ones on offer at reasonable prices. There's a snazzy, electric blue, collapsible with 3 toes for 850 baht but I went for a plain, metal, 2 piece adjustable for 150 baht. Does the job.
  6. No one, including the editors of this forum, caught the irony of putting this story right next to the Yingluck one. Here's a picture of some hardened criminal in handcuffs awaiting trial and the other one is of Yingluck.
  7. Does she get a complimentary room at the Police Hospital, too?
  8. You mean Peppina's?
  9. And I thought this was going to be about chicks in heat.
  10. Pattaya Nuea, Pattaya Klang and Pattaya Tai. Get ready for an hour or so wait during high season.
  11. Really old guys (70s) will remember late 50s shows like Sgt. Bilko and the slew of Warner Brothers westerns like Maverick, Sugarfoot and Cheyenne. Not to mention Leave It To Beaver and Ozzie and Harriet-the original middle class, family comedies.
  12. 92-96 every day in BKK. It was cooler in mid November! Yes, a cooling trend is coming next week. For how long?
  13. Putin may want to re-form the Soviet Union but he has enough common sense to know that invading NATO countries is a death wish. The real Acid Test will be the Baltic Countries. Once part of the Soviet Union, now part of NATO. Could become a flashpoint.
  14. Way too many people right now. GIve it a week or so to mellow out-unless you're into big crowds. A few interesting eating options but nothing is cheap. Looking at menus in some of the more Western restaurants, everything is about 600 baht and up. Pensioners enter at your own risk.
  15. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.
  16. Who in Australia is named jeevarass? Sounds like he's ripe for the pickins.
  17. You are lucky you have mamagement that cares. My building is somewhat similar. They will screen out certain undesirables but high season is always a nightmare due to sheer numbers. Some jagov will always slip thru.
  18. This memo makes no mention of "Entertainment Zones". Are they just going to jettison that whole stipulation? Yeah, they never intended to enforce it, anyways, so why bother. Just open up the whole joint and let the chaos begin.
  19. It's not even $5 million US. Who's going to believe this drivel?
  20. Yeah, it's gonna keep dropping. My recent experience at immigration renewing retirement visa only adds to my feeling that falangs are not wanted here. Grade A tourist, 15 yrs in, plenty of money, never a problem for the authorities and they are giving me the 3rd degree treatment like I'm a common criminal and they are just looking for something, anything to trip me up and give them their "gotcha" moment and out I go. One can only take so much of the abusive attitude here.
  21. The chinese tried this tactic in new york. They even had their own police stations set up. This was not to protect Chinese tourists. This was aimed at controlling anti CCP sentiment from groups like Falun Gong. This is the most hideous form of autocracy you could imagine. The thought police from your country operating in a foreign land to keep you in line.
  22. Qualified establishments. Ha. Anyone with a brown envelope. Typical Thailand.
  23. Here ya go. Every Tom, Dick and Harry local dive bar is gonna want in on this. Good luck with "enforcement". The one thing you can count on Thailand for is bad ideas. They seem to be in a hurry to cook their golden goose once and for all.
  24. 30 year old building in Jomtien built like a brick sh*thouse!! I would never live in a new building here. If I recall correctly, the price of concrete tripled about 2009. Anything built since then, I wouldn't trust. We've had to fight management tooth and nail to get things done but we've managed to get the elevators and the pool renovated. Next up, a new paint job. We pay extra assessments for these projects but boy, that is money well spent.
