  1. Hexane [...] Soybean processors use it as a solvent—a cheap and efficient way of extracting oil from soybeans, a necessary step to making most conventional soy oil and protein ingredients. Whole soybeans are literally bathed in hexane to separate the soybeans’ oil from protein

Good, but how do you know which solvent Thai manufactures use and what is the remaining hexane level in the final food product? Ten, 20 parts per million?

    Some manufacturers use isohexane (2-methylpentane).

1/ ISO Hexane is a compound of hexane, it's like the brother of hexane which again is a by product of gasoline

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-Methylpentane,

so really if you want to eat food that has been soaked in that go ahead, but I'm not.

2/ It's only organic TVP that uses not so cheap isohexane, here in THL I bet they use the cheap stuff ...Organic TVP which by the way, I have never seen in Thailand.

3/ Anyway the product has already been cooked at 200deg before, so when you cook it, AGAIN and after its bath in gasoline it is virtually nutrient empty.

Proteins are heated to a temperature of 150-200°C, which denatures them into a fibrous, insoluble, porous units. Going into a simple biology lesson here, the term denature means pretty much what it sounds like – to lose one’s nature. It is a term we use in biology when explaining the nature of proteins. Proteins are very temperature sensitive and even a slight change in temperature can denature them, making them lose their structure and function

4/ The claim of TVP industry is that they manage to clean the product well enough to get rid of hexane. Yeah right it's been soak in the nasty stuff but we clean it don"t worry

5/ Why bother with processed nasty products, when you have plenty of natural healthy delicious real legumes nutrients packed around such as, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, pumpkin, etc, which are also cheaper ?

  2. TVP contains gasoline

This statement is not only alarmist, but based on an ill-informed view of scientific reality.

Please read the label above and be assured that this food does not contain "gasoline".

Yes we are aware that chemicals are used to process the base ingredient.

Hexane is a byproduct of gasoline refining. Soybean processors use it as a solvent—a cheap and efficient way of extracting oil from soybeans, a necessary step to making most conventional soy oil and protein ingredients. [...]

TVP or kaset is produced by thermoplastic extrusion of defatted soy protein flour with a protein content of 50%.

    [...]

Thanks for this, but what are you saying here?

What is the connection between beef and defatted soy protein flour?

I am saying that fake meat is primarily made of fat and that TVP contains gasoline

  4. I see , probe stick to legumes and veg then

Sent from my HTC_PN071 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Oh you will learn to recognize the fish tofu from the regular fresh tofu easily.

On some brands, it's even written in English in supermarkets, they are in yellowish cubes.

  5. Sorry but most of the large chain restaurants do definitely employ some sanitary measures like hair nets, face masks and gloves - I am thinking of Fuji/Hachiban/Mos Burger/various Western chains... You are much less likely to get sick from a chain restaurant in Thailand than you are from the local food stall.

I know that doesn't sit with you guys who are "anti-establishment" and have your own little reality going on in your head.

You never queued at a mall restroom haven't ya?

You would appreciate the hygiene routine of all the chefs/waitress/beauticians of the companies you've quoted :

    - No one uses drier

    - Half of them do wash hand but none with soap. just a few second rinse under cold water.

    - the other half just check face/make up/ hair and off you go.

Don't get fooled by hairnet or face mask it's all a show

  6. Same goes with the cute girls that sells you expensive international beauty/make up products, yes they dip their perfectly manucured finger into your 70 dollars face cream without having wash their hands at toilet.

If you go to a mall; you can see 90% of employees serving food or beauty items don't wash hands properly

  7. Here is the nutrition summery for Ground Beef

    http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/generic/ground-beef-with-textured-vegetable-protein-cooked

Basically the main ingredient over half of the product is FAT 56%, but not just normal fat, processed fat that is going to be really hard to digest and be clogging your arteries just like meat eaters.

Secondly you have 40% protein but your body only needs 8 to 12% so your kidneys are going to work extra to get rid of it.

    Nutrition summary:

    Calories
    69
    Fat
    4.19g
    Carbs
    0.75g
    Protein
    6.72g

There are 69 calories in 1 ounce of cooked Ground Beef with Vegetable Protein. Calorie breakdown: 56% fat, 4% carbs, 40% protein.

TVP or kaset is produced by thermoplastic extrusion of defatted soy protein flour with a protein content of 50%.

What this means is that when proteins in our foods are subjected to high temperatures, whether it be through simple cooking or industrial heating, they are prone to losing the original shape and function they had.

Soybeans are routinely processed with hexane (a petroleum chemical), in order to convert them into TVP. Various amounts of hexane are regularly found in processed soy food products. To elaborate further, according to a report from the Cornucopia Institute:Hexane is a byproduct of gasoline refining. Soybean processors use it as a solvent—a cheap and efficient way of extracting oil from soybeans, a necessary step to making most conventional soy oil and protein ingredients. Whole soybeans are literally bathed in hexane to separate the soybeans’ oil from protein

  8. - Veggies

Green leafy are very cheap 5/10/20 bath a bunch of kale but also very poisoned (200 times euro regulation)

You have to look around for organic coops that will sell you organic veg not overprices like in malls.

    salad 15/20thb 2 heads, celery 5/10thb a bunch, coriander 5/10thb bunch,

    - Legumes are not so popular here

The big one being of course rice you can easily find organic brown rice at around 60/70 Thb/ kg,

but they also have muang beans 40thb /kg very popular, azuki beans, job tears and kidney beans.

Imported legumes can be found in some larger supermarkets:

    chick peas 40thb /500g

    green lentils 130thb /kg

    buckwheat 150thb/kg

    Organic Quinoa 220 thb /kg

I was around asok last night bar hoping, less noisy smog-spewing traffic so when you sit at that outdoor garden near koreatown it is more pleasant, less traffic down sukhumvit where i live, the Siam area turns into a big festival with vendors everywhere, i'd say that the 'protesters' are in the minority especially at night( in the daytime there are virtually no protesters, just guards and stages) and most are just people out for the night like me, this is a big production that costs 10million baht a day according to the papers, it's a free nationalistic festival hosted by the Bangkok money elite complete with free food for thai's and live music.

That sounds great for the short term.. But what happens long term? What are the plans for the future if the present (albeit caretaker) government is forced out? Who will fill the void, and what agenda will they bring to the table? Stop corruption? Stop floods? Stop the poverty? These have all been tried before with the same results and that won't change in the foreseeable future regardless of who is in power.

But more to the point, how long would the new government remain in control before some power monger, with his own agenda, decides to protest to the point where they defy the laws of the land and attempts to oust them from seat?

As to what good has it done for Thailand, I hope you can see further than imagined pollution improvement, free food and music on your nights out. This is not a dig at you personally pkspeaker, please don't take it as such, but your impression seems to be the observations of many, nothing changed...............sad.png

There are Farang who actually believe in Suthep !

    WOW

pkspeaker ; Richard Barrow tells us not to be fooled by the party atmosphere and stay away from protest, bombs don't discriminate.

  10. I don't think these kids are expressing hate.

Hate eats you inside and shows on your face.

They are showing attitude, disrespect and being provocative.

Unfortunately, due to dislocation of ancient Buddhist values and an ever failing education, violence and incivilities has become their mode of expression.

Watch out for this coming generation!

  11. I would say it's fair.

    It needs explaining though.

Thai men as any Thai citizen get educated to avoid confrontation and challenges, and courage is not a Thai value. As a rule people are taught to go around any obstacle rather than overcome it.

On top of this you have the son cultural exception like in most countries in Asian or African where basically young boys are educated with double standards as regards to their sisters: They can do whatever they like, no rule, no discipline, no chores, no cleaning, no cooking, no looking after sibling, basically no moral values and all play. They become total egoistic prats with no moral.

My friend's Thai GF has a brother who stole all their mother savings and lost it at the casino. Appalled the all family collected some (more) money to incite him to leave the family house and live elsewhere. He took the money, spent it all again and came back after having his fun.

He still lives there, no job, no desire to do anything but be a total rogue and parasite and that totally normal.

    Some people never learn ...

A good example of this tendency to go around problems and avoid confrontation was the occupation and closing of the airport, the burning of shopping centers in Bangkok and the current occupations of key intersections and refusal to participate in elections eh?

Are you fellows blind or something? For the past 10 years a majority of Thais have been ultra confrontational, eschewing authority and wrecking the place. Wake up!!!!!

Give a whistle, free food and a flag you get a rally here.
