Advice needed: external SSD for a Macbook Pro M1 vs USB 3.1 HDD's
tomazbodner replied to WaveHunter's topic in Apple Products
I had very high failure rate of the external M.2 SSD enclosures, some have not just failed but made stick unreadable and unable to format again. Internal drive (2TB flash) in my case is at ~2750 MB/s and external at ~950 MB/s (WD My Passport SSD) and ~1700 MB/s (SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD), according to BlackMagic Disk Speed Test. R and W are very close, nearly the same. Tested on Intel i9 based 27" iMac 2020. Not sure if this is of any use. -
Both P-trap and S-trap won't work well if you are rarely/never using that drain, as with no water in it to block the pipe, it does nothing. There's a silicone plug against insects and smell that works whether you use that drain or not, though.

I remember years ago, when Bangkok main immigration was still at Suan Phlu, an officer at the counter next to mine looking at a young foreigner's visa in passport... it was ED visa renewal time... Apparently the guy studied Thai language... officer looked at him, then said: big fish eat small fish... farang looked clueless... so officer said again: big fish eat small fish... still confused silence... lastly the officer said: alien is here to have fun, not learn.... again nothing.... extension rejected. So it could happen. But not at the airport. They only see visa type, but don't have all the paperwork on what the applicant is studying. It could be asked, however, and if foreigner says Thai, it could be tested right there. But not if tourist is entering on a tourist visa. Why would officer be asking tourist about what the reason for his previous trips to Thailand was. Entering on another ED visa of course gives immigration a reason to ask what is being studied. It is immigration officer's job to filter out those who are trying to game the system or come with non-genuine intent. And just this forum is enough to see they are doing a rather poor job given how many members work around the rules, change visa types and use agents to get them visas and extensions they certainly should not be getting. And that's a big benefit to those breaking rules, but it adds stress to genuine tourists and travelers, as they get quizzed or even rejected for doing nothing wrong. Fire off...

I wanted to renew (or rather move from pink paper to plastic) drivers license a few years back in EU, and was told I can't get it as my address is outside EU. So I had no choice but to drop that and get a Thai drivers license. A friend there has a Thai wife who has a Thai drivers license and wanted to get one locally there - no, not accepted. She would have to go and do all the theoretical exams, practice drive with instructor and then pass the driving exam. She can still use Thai license with international driving permit, but it means coming to Thailand to issue IDP every year. So if you can keep one from home country, you should.

Indonesia passes criminal code banning sex outside marriage
tomazbodner replied to webfact's topic in World News
Unless their parents come with the couple, and report them to police, why would they fear? First of all it won't come in effect for 3 years, and when it does, the only one who can make a report that could result in jail time would be a direct family member (parents, children, spouses, siblings). Now if you have a nasty family that would report you for sleeping with your girlfriend, your problem might not be Indonesian law but your family. -
Why bother with the car? There are tens of thousands of CCTV cameras around the country. Why not simply link those to face recognition software and compare with immigration mugshots and database of entries/exits from the country. There are several companies providing software (and hardware) for such systems, most notably NEC, if there's concern about Chinese companies, where several vendors offer very good tracking and face recognition systems.

Advice on what border crossing too go to
tomazbodner replied to Tengtai's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
How about a trip to Penang, Malaysia and back? About 3900 baht return flight leaving Saturday, returning Sunday. Stay at some nice hotel on the island and fly back through airport, which should give you less hassle than land border. This was just a quick check on Google on Air Asia tickets (from Don Mueang): -

Where to buy cheap second hand electronics online?
tomazbodner replied to organicman's topic in General Topics
There were several promotions of Samsung and LG TVs of 8-9k baht lately, brand new with free delivery. You could go to Kaidee.com and see what you can get there, but it won't be a whole lot cheaper, it's no guarantee it would work beyond the moment you buy it, and might not look very pretty. If you can't read Thai, open it in Google Chrome, and use translate to English function: https://www.kaidee.com/c77a4190-electric-tv_hometheater-samsung?tv_hometheater_size_end=55&tv_hometheater_size_start=55 -
Owner selling my condo I am renting
tomazbodner replied to Hindy's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
I was seeing a condo unit that had a tenant. It was agreed with the tenant up-front when I could go there and how long I could stay. I ended up not taking the unit, but if I did, it was expected that I would continue allowing the tenant with the rent for the period agreed. Sometimes having a tenant is a plus for someone looking to buy unit to rent it out. It's a minus for someone buying to move in. For the rest, usually there's a termination clause of the contract, maybe 30 days notice or alike, where either party can terminate the agreement. But as others say - the owner decided to sell, expecting the prices of real-estate would drop significantly in the next 6 months or so. But, if you know that prices will drop, will you buy now? I can't see there would be many takers for that place anytime soon. It's worth shopping around for another place in case things go south with new owner who actually buys the place, no matter how unlikely. -

looking for a pataya Lawer to get a divorce . Thai+ Falang
tomazbodner replied to yeahbutif's topic in Pattaya
Were they married in Thailand or in Germany? While I can't say for Germany, in another EU country, it is possible to get this done through the embassy. 10 years away is a case of abandonment (I think that's when it's over 2 years) and divorce can be triggered in Thailand, if married in Thailand. If married abroad, then embassy of that country can have some forms filled out by the Thai and would require that person to visit embassy at his country to fill out the paperwork to proceed with divorce. Not personally involved in this but had a colleague who went through this and it took a couple of years but ended up successfully. Without lawyers, although a lawyer I know gave advice to approach the embassy after foreign man ignored all calls to do his part previously. Send a mail to German embassy in Bangkok, tell the problem, and I am confident they would help and give procedure to get it done. May need to visit embassy a couple of times and get some documents certified and provided. In colleague's case it took about 6 months after getting embassy involved for it to get completed. They were married in the Netherlands. -

Chaos Reported At Phuket Airport With Over 300 Passengers In Trouble
tomazbodner replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Would put me off flying VietJet.. The reason for the chaos in sum: One of planes didn't fly from BKK to HKT, so some passengers were juggled around, but after plane took off from Phuket back to BKK, they found extra passengers on board, so they returned and landed back in Phuket. As it was late and airport closed, they couldn't take off again so they let all passengers sit at the airport until the morning when another plane picked them up. https://thainewsroom.com/2022/12/02/plane-returns-to-phuket-airport-after-extra-passenger-found-on-board/ -
Thailand goes into battle against resurgent HIV/AIDS

Saw this article, maybe glimpse of hope for some: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/12/01/health/hiv-vaccine-phase-1-study/index.html Though with anti-vaccine sentiment, I doubt this would make much of a difference, even if working perfectly... -
Bitcoin Family in Phuket

This was posted by ECB... https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/blog/date/2022/html/ecb.blog221130~5301eecd19.en.html Though there's one thing I disagree with this article. People's greed and stupidity. So Bitcoin could as well be around for a long time. -
Netizens Blast Building A Drain Higher Than The Road

I just received a bunch of stuff from US, bought from eBay, and it had all the customs duties pre-paid, delivered hassle free to my door. There must be an option to calculate and prepay any customs fees. Given how much shipping costs lately, and that it is included in base to calculate the import duties, just shipping alone would already reach or exceed the duty-free limit. Sometimes post parcels don't get inspected if they are small and look unimportant, declared at a low value as a gift. But if they get checked, you might need a trip to post office. On the other hand the couriers declare and pay importing duties on everything, but then might call you and ask you to pay the import duty on their website with a credit card before they forward the package to you. Not sure if any of these seems a better option for you.
