Offshore banking for retirees
Digitalbanana replied to Kevin1908's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Thanks. Looks like I can close my Nat West account. -
I've held a Nat West account for around 40 years based in the Channel Islands, first using a UK address and then when I moved entirely overseas to my Thai address. It's mostly dormant with little balance but I wanted to maintain it as I expect to need it in future and I have no other UK account. The account type is now called Select and by February it changes to International Select. However whereas for past 40 years it was free, there will be an 8 UKP monthly charge. Nat West says in future all accounts for international clients will have fees, so changing from International Select to one of their others, even if its possible may not help? Has anyone else encountered this change and how did they work around it to have a bank account with no fees - if that's even possible?

Interesting thanks. Tried that and worked (attached log) but still not recognizing the Broadcom card, so I will try and get a new brand card as suggested by @fdsa. Really appreciate the feed back guys. Linux isn't my forte so all good stuff to know.LinuxReport_resolveWiFicardDetection.txt

Thnks, I get result: >EFI variables are not supported on this system So presume secure boot isn't available from this?
-
I am not sure Secure Boot is an option on this laptop, its 11 years old. Cannot see it mentioned anywhere in BIOS?
-
That sounds reasonable idea and price. Do you know if these are more reliable with Linux than Broadcom?
-
Thanks - only Ethernet and Wireless USB detected, not the Broadcom card.

Thanks very helpful. Didn't know about powertop. The turnables doesn't mention any 'Good' power saving devices and doesn't mention WiFi card at all. There is also no setting in BIOS for WiFi. So the USB Wifi or Ethernet cable is the way forward. Appreciate the feedback. My main new PC is a Win11 device, just keeping the old ex Win7 laptops going on Linux for extra jobs so will buy USB WiFi for each of them. LinuxReport_powertop_turnables.txt

Thanks. When I try your commands there is no reference to any wireless, the wireless on/off light on keyboard stays default off and will not turn on. I opened up the laptop to see inside and see it is a Broadcom chip. This laptop WiFi used to work on Linux and then one day stopped. Any idea why it worked before? LinuxReport.txt

Belfast isn't out yet? POTD is on the download sites already. No one uses DVD's anymore.
-
Presumably using PC is easiest for this? 4K_Youtube_to_Mp3 allows up to 25 songs per download in the free version and creates the mp3 with associated metadata. There's a free Spotify download add-on for Chromium browser to download tracks to mp3 also.

We solved it by just buying a USB WiFi and it worked immediately. No idea why the built in one doesn't work, Linux Mint 20.2 says drivers up to date. This is an old PC the kids use for online schooling and it works fine again now. We bought https://shopee.co.th/Mini-Wifi-USB-2.0-Wireless-Mini-Wifi-Adapter-802.11N-600Mbps-i.10931876.1633146646 for only 86THB inc delivery. I could have gone for a 5GHZ version, but not necessary for this PC requirements.

Office.com from Microsoft offers the Office apps for free via Edge browser, though I prefer Google office docs for this, a long time habit maybe. Personally I'd rather just have MS Office on my PC. The 2021 release works well with re-activator off the usual sites.
