  1. Been working on WallStreet for over 30 years. Building real-time trading systems that leverage risk-arb and statistical anomalies.
  2. Came to meet a girl (in 2001), but fell in love with the country. I stay because I really like Thai people. As well as the food, the weather, the girls, the low cost of living, and the entertaining news.
  3. Investing is a long path that requires little time each week - maybe a few hours. Investing does not produce "a fortune" until a couple decades have passed and compounding performs its magic. Speculating, on the other hand, requires a full time commitment in order to produce "a fortune" in less than a decade. Many investment advisors are investing their own money for the long run. They are not speculators. While I agree that a large number of investment advisors are subpar, there are good ones who are worth their price.
  4. In my experience, his welcome will have so much more to do with his personality and how he treats other people, than it will with him having a boyfriend.
  5. First thing that popped into my mind is that she possibly fell out the back of a pickup. My condolences to her family.
  6. I like the new "badge". But I miss seeing the "reputation" number above the post number.
  7. Another option is to exit Thailand, and re-enter on a visa exempt (if you quality for that), then convert to a Non-O visa after you re-enter but well before the visa exempt expires. This is what I just did last month. Now waiting to apply for a retirement extension based on the Non-O.
  8. Hmm. When I first moved to Thailand 13 years ago, I opened a Thai bank account with 20,000THB. Never touched it and never added more and never had a problem for 4 years. Until I got a work permit and everything changed.
  9. I solved this with Skype. I have their international calling plan, so unlimited free calls to and from the US. I also purchased a US phone number that is hooked up to Skype. Calls to my US number ring Skype. And the SMS messages with OTP sent by Capital One appear in Skype. It has proven to be very useful.
  10. I use wire transfers, from Capital One and from my little credit union in Ann Arbor MI. Both can be done online easily, fees are reasonable, and the spreads are acceptable. I gave up on IACH after several banks indicated they will not support it until forced by regulation.
  11. Bought my gf a karaoke microphone with built-in speaker. Loves it. Uses it almost every day.
  12. What if I have $1M in my US bank account, and ATM access to that money, and CC's with limits totaling over $100K USD? Do I still need that much money in a Thai bank account?
  13. It is not just "Farang" that get taken advantage of by Thai women here. Although, I believe we do tend to be more gullible.
  14. I watch YT on my LG TV. The ads are only a little bit annoying. I accept them. Happy content creators get paid for their good work.
  15. I have used Dr, Chartchai at Samitivej Hospital Sukhumvit 49 Bangkok. He is very good and I have been happy with every surgery. Not plastic surgery, actually, but reconstruction after cancer surgery. He is so well regarded that he has patients flying in from Australia for his work.
  16. They should try just one day in NYC. Bangkok is dead silent compared to NYC.
  17. I have been ordering my espresso beans from Simple Coffee for three years. So far, the best I have found here in Thailand.
  18. In my experience, empathy is something Thais have in abundance.
  19. Spoiled is the word I would use to describe Gen Z.
  20. This is a very good suggestion. Just flew to Phnom Phen for a quick border run. The flights to Cambodia/Vietnam/Malaysia/Singapore are cheap and easy. I just booked a trip (one way) to Singapore - 1,505THB. Unbelievable. The trips will provide a nice changeup during your stay.
  21. I still have, and still use, my 2014 Intel MBP. almost 10 years on, three replaced keyboards (I am really tough on keyboards), and some delamination of the screen (unnoticeable when lit), and it is still a workhorse.
  22. I have the M1 MacBook Pro. Best computer I have ever owned. The screen is fantastic, and the keyboard is finally "back" to awesome. I have been waiting for the M3 (if 3nm) to upgrade. The only improvement I would like to see is a slightly smaller trackpad.
