Thailand now has got so bad, old women expect tips for giving you an expensive beer in a condom holder at a counter bar. It's nonsense. Far better value for money in South East Asian countries away from Thailand, which is now a rip-off and just price gouges foreigners at every opportunity. They have an overinflated idea of the country compared to other destinations. People are now deciding with their feet and air tickets as to where to spend their money. The outflow starts as a trickle, then a river and then a tidal wave, as people race to the exits.

I hate both the practice of adding GST etc. on bills and the so called 15% - 20% tips that are more or less compulsory in the USA and Canada. I am also not interested in the excuse how poorly US waiters etc. get paid, or that they rely on tips to make a wage, take it up with your employer. That is between them and the establishment in which they work, it should not be on the customers toes. Prices marked on goods, should be the price you pay, anything else is misrepresentation.

I think you are more or less right. Thailand never used to have a tipping culture at all, now it is everywhere, even tip tins on the counters at hotel receptions and in the space between front and back of taxis.

True to a degree, but then you also get them, not only in Thailand, expecting tips on top of the service charge or dropping ' not so subtle ' hints that they don't get the service charge

I couldn't agree more, do-gooders out there, pretending they are on some noble cause, without caring about the burden it puts on resources, infrastructure, and the influx of diseases and crime to the unfortunate receiving country. I agree with the second paragraph, but Ladyboys certainly do not control prisons, there aren't enough of them. And there are far worse criminal gangs in the prisons, than there are Ladyboys. Lady boys earn their keep in prison doing the obvious, with a side line of washing and cleaning as well.

My family, who I took on a tour of Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand, were astonished in the breakfast room one day by a Sikh family. This occurred in Hanoi, but could have been anywhere. This particular family were extremely loud, rearranging the breakfast room, scraping the tables across the floor, to sit together, and snappy, demanding and authoritative with the waiting staff. The men kept clicking their fingers for staff to service their needs. We were slightly shocked, as we had always had the opinion in the UK, that the Sikh people were very polite and friendly. After they left, the receptionist told us that they were always like that when they stayed at this particular hotel, and treated the staff like servants. This group didn't smell, but I understand the above post, as I used to get in plenty of Asian taxis in the UK where the BO was overwhelming. I no longer ride with them. Back in the UK, I do a deal with family members to pick me up and drop me off, and I compensate them for their time and trouble, via petrol and gifts.

Well, it's certainly a lot quicker as you are not in a queue waiting to obtain your visa. The arrival and departure card etc. can now be done online in advance, and you can install an app to your phone to show immigration that you have complied with everything, which they will scan. So, yes, a lot quicker.
