Bloodbath in Pattaya: Jealous man stabs his wife to death
Peterw42 replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Where are you getting your statistics from ? (I see it on the TV therefore it must be high). Are there published statistics that show the murder/domestic violence rate is higher in Thailand. Its similar to suicide rates, the Thai suicide rate (including expats) is no higher than the west, its just reported more here. -
Bloodbath in Pattaya: Jealous man stabs his wife to death
Peterw42 replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Yes, that's my observations as well, "jealous man kills ex GF/wife" isn't a strictly Thai thing. It happens all over the world. But for some reason the commentary here is "Thai men are immature, child like etc" Are murder suicides in other countries only committed by mature, stable, grown-ups.. -
As Crossy says, all of the disadvantages and none of the advantages, not portable, cant be upgraded. Maybe start with why he wants an all in one and work backwards from there, point out that this laptop or this PC does the same etc

Foreigner Credit Card Denials
Peterw42 replied to D M G's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
If you are having problem using a credit card, maybe talk to the card issuer. Not sure that posting the problem on social media solves anything, except maybe pushing a conspiracy theory that foreigners are being discriminated against. Cards have limits, cards have overseas limits, cards have blocks for outside of normal spending patterns, all normal security measures. If your usual spending is groceries and gym membership in home country, then all of a sudden the next purchase is a sixpack of beer in 7/11 in a remote Thai village, that will probably bounce. Also, CC company's dont like purchases in 3rd countries, eg: card is issued in country A, being used in country B, to buy goods from a merchant in country C. Its a red flag. -
I agree, for a specific installation like a basement etc, but if you start considering pumps etc for a normal installation, maybe its time to reconsider the location/type of the unit. Or spend a couple of dollar getting pipes chased into walls/floor etc. Whenever I have seen those pumps in use, its because someone was trying to do a job on the cheap, or an installer couldn't solder etc.
-
Any half decent installer should be able to attach a new unit to existing pipes (drainage and refrigerant). I have had it done 3-4 times. Its just a bit of plumbing/soldering. If the new indoor/outdoor unit is going in the same place, no reason you cant connect to the existing pipes, already hidden in the wall etc. I see those pumps as an absolute band-aid last measure, if old pipes cant be re-used, or pipes cant be chased/hidden into wall etc.

Not sure what is risky or murky. These places sell CBD cannabis products, 100% legal. Its not THC cannabis that gets you stoned, that is illegal. They do some creative marketing and labeling, trying to make out its THC cannabis, but its not.

O-A Visa renewal - Bank information required
Peterw42 replied to TimF's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
As others have said, the bank should be very familiar with the immigration requirements. If you go to the branch closest to the immigration office, they probably do 10 letters a day. If you do require 12 months statements etc, find the main branch for the area and they can often do the statements strait away. otherwise a sub-branch is contacting the main branch. -
Question to Thai Citizenship Holders
Peterw42 replied to Morpheus42's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
PR doesn't get you a Thai national ID card. It gets you a non-Thai pink ID card. Same ID you can get on any long stay visa/extension -
Renovation Issues
Peterw42 replied to dia1's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
Sounds like communication problems. Maybe involve an English/Thai speaking person as a go between. -
18 months ago. I helped a friend only a couple of weeks ago and no Res Cert required. Most are more interested in a long stay visa. Yes, the good old days. I still have an account in phuket that has me living at Noks Guest house.
-
Not sure why the discussion about resident certificates. It comes down to the individual banks what they want, but in my experience (5 accounts with 3 banks, phuket, bkk and pattaya) no bank has ever wanted a Cert Of Res.
-
You wont find much difference between the banks, as others have said, it may come down to which bank will open an account. Requirements to open an account will vary between banks, even branches of the same bank will vary. A resident certificate from immigration isnt usually a bank requirement.

Avoid Monday morning (especially after a holiday weekend). Otherwise, it often looks worse than it actually is. People doing 90 days are left outside while IO takes passports inside. Big crowd doesnt always mean a big queue or wait. As others have said, recent changes to the online 90 day has made it more accessible for those who couldn't use it before.

Thailand back to back visas?
Peterw42 replied to kingofallasians's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Not sure if you have heard of the pandemic sweeping the planet, borders are shut, there are entry/exit restrictions, quarantine requirements etc, and they change on a daily basis. Most in/out options are not viable at the moment. If you can get here, you can still do an ED visa. -
Bank accounts holding ThB 800,000?
Peterw42 replied to baz 79's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Maybe its no need to ever visit immigration, no waiting, no queueing, no scanning, printing, photocopies, no money in the bank, no visit to the bank, no insurance. Hand your passport over to one person and they hand it back next day all done. -
Any of these SSD v HDD discussions its worth noting. YES, an SSD is orders of magnitude faster than a HDD, "BUT" RAM is also orders of magnitude faster than a SSD. RAM is where stuff gets done, SSD is where stuff is stored. In the first instance, nothing beats lots of RAM for the actual fast operation of programs/apps. The initial loading of an app/data into ram takes time and the SSD speed comes into play, After that, with plenty of RAM onboard, theoretically the SSD isnt being used, everything is running in RAM at RAM speed. I'm typing this on a laptop with 16GB of RAM, laptop is always on, basically does internet stuff. The laptop booted from the SSD a couple of months ago. A browser and 10 tabs are open in RAM. The last time the laptop accessed the SSD was probably 3 weeks ago. (joke, but you get the idea) If you run out of space on a SSD, and start storing apps/data on an HDD, you are negating a lot of the speed benefits from the SSD. Yes, SSDs are great, but depending on setup and usage, the benefits may be minimal

Beginner - need some information
Peterw42 replied to noodleslayer's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
No visa requirements to enter into a lease. Not sure anyone can tell if a person on the other end of a phone can usually speak English. If they are advertising in English then presume they have some English, if someone is advertising their email or LINE, then the idea is so you can message them. Maybe familiarize yourself with a translation app so you can translate messages if required. -
Bank Letter for marriage visa
Peterw42 replied to Omega7's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Yes, I think my office is the same. As you say, its best just to take every document you have ever owned. I usually get the same day, then they cant catch you out. But every year, the still want something they didn't want last year. -
Bank Letter for marriage visa
Peterw42 replied to Omega7's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Maybe ask the question in a Hua Hin forum, you will probably get someone who has recently done a marriage extension. Otherwise, a same day bank book update should be acceptable, if it reflects the same figures as the letter. That's the idea behind a same day update, to verify the letter. You will find most of the banks will have a main branch that opens early, 8am. I usually do my everything in pattaya in one day, starting at the bank, then the ampher (kor ror 2) then immigration mid morning.
