bamnutsak replied to riclag's topic in Political Soapbox
Detailed in the OP's link... Following his murder conviction, Chauvin later pleaded guilty to criminal charges for depriving George Floyd and a then-14-year-old boy of their civil rights on separate occasions. He was sentenced to serve 252 months in prison in the federal case. -
PM Vows No Intervention in Thai Military Amidst Reform Proposal
bamnutsak replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I think every coup, at least the last twenty or so, has been Royally endorsed. So there's that. 2014 Coup... Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha was royally endorsed as the leader of the country, although His Majesty the King, who is 86 and unwell, did not attend the ceremony in person. An official royal gazette was released confirming Gen. Prayuth's endorsement after a ceremony this morning at the Army Club in Bangkok's Theves district. Reporters were not allowed to view the ceremony.... https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2014/05/26/1401087010/ -
Transferring Banking Apps to new phone (2024)
bamnutsak replied to phetphet's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
I was able to transfer SCBEasy to a new phone on my own, instantaneously. With BBL I had to visit my branch for a photo for their facial recognition system. -

Is there a date in the "Inform Date" field? Can you describe these changes, or post a redacted copy? -
New Dirty Trick by bank ATMs
bamnutsak replied to jaywalker2's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You're using a foreign/non-Thai ATM debit card? I used my foreign (U.S.) ATM debit card this week at Bangkok Bank ATM in Central Chitlom (lower floor in the connector to Central Embassy) to withdraw 20,000 THB. I was not presented with any DCC option. I always use a BBL ATM for this type of transaction. 20,220 THB at the daily Visa rate cost me $590.19 (4 Dec). I already had the 220 baht fee rebated at $6.42. So my net cost was $583.77. I use my U.S. credit card (Chase Saphire Preferred) extensively here, mostly via Google Wallet 'Tap-to-Pay'. Always charged in THB, but if I use the physical card I always stipulate that I'll be paying in THB. -
Seen/purchased (PG) this week in Tops Food Hall, Central Citlom, a separate section for "Foreign Tea". Not cheap though.

Fishing for freedom: Thai crew released from Myanmar custody

This doesn't bode well for the Land Bridge, not that it will ever be built, as the border runs right down the middle of the Kraburi. -
Foreign Pilot Approval Raises Concerns for Thai Aviation
bamnutsak replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
https://www.bangkokair.com/press-release/view/bangkok-airways-leases-aircraft-to-meet-increased-demand A319 and A320. International routes (LPQ, PNH, SAI). I think Amelia - a weird name for an airline given Earhart got famously lost - is a subsidiary of Air France. A friend flew BKK-LPQ-BKK; PG 941/942 this week, she mentioned the flight deck and cabin staff were French, although I think PG is supposed to have one or two staff on board. While Amelia will provide pilots and cabin crew, Bangkok Airways flight attendants will also be on board to ensure a seamless passenger experience. Passengers can expect the same high-quality in-flight service, including food, beverages, and baggage allowances, that they've come to know from Bangkok Airways. -
Thailand Eyes Direct Flights from US Amid Growing Tourist Demand
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Not sure if TAT officials are talking about TG, or one-stop, or non-stop direct flights. If it's non-stop direct and TG, it would be LAX, if it is United, then SFO. There is a shortage of supply (aircraft and pilots) between North America and Asia, which leads to higher prices and less award inventory. For now, this seems like TAT-talk. -
Warning issued on eve of White Lotus series in Thailand - video
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I've got to believe that there will be one or two cultural faux-pas represented that will set off some of the more jingoistic defenders of national morality. But if Hangover 2 passed with little kerfuffle - save the death of a stuntman - then the outrage may be offset by the positive representation of Thailand's natural beauty and charm. I watched the first season; it was OK. Like Succession, which most friends and acquaintances also loved, WL didn't inspire me to watch S02. -
Thai Tax Strategy Revamp: VAT Hike, Income Tax Cuts Proposed
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I think the VAT rate is 10%, but as of 1997 it has been temporarily reduced to 7%, and that reduction has been renewed annually since, by Royal decree. Currently this temporary reduction runs through 30 Sep 2025. -

Citibank ATMs in Bangkok?
bamnutsak replied to david_je's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Yes, I made a CC purchase yesterday (Central Chidlom) and got that rate (34.155 rounded up). I think Visa has one rate per 24 hour period, but that idea may be wrong. And yes, banks have their own TT rates, which can change multiple times per day. I think BBL had three rates yesterday. -
Given that you can only report on-line in a seven-day window - I assume this recent change is still in effect - and that there are limited appointment slots, which get booked out quickly, more people are forced to report in person. And there are runners with upwards of 50 passports in hand filing reports. So the reports of wait-times of up to four+ hours are probably to be expected. Maybe they shift more staff to 90-day processing once they clear their backlog at 17:00? IME, once you hand over your document package the report gets processed in three minutes tops. CW is my reporting office, I assume that's the OP's office as well.

New York Times: Pete Hegseth’s mother wrote him an email in 2018 accusing him of mistreating women The mother of Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, sent an email to her son in 2018 that sharply criticized his treatment of women, The New York Times reported Friday. Penelope Hegseth told her son in the email that there are “many” women whom he has “abused in some way” and encouraged him to “get some help,” according to the email published by The Times. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/11/30/politics/pete-hegseth-mother-email-new-york-times/index.html

Citibank ATMs in Bangkok?
bamnutsak replied to david_je's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
The OP might be better off doing a counter withdrawal? Where you withdraw your daily limit ($1,000? $1,500?, $2,500?) in one go. Google: counter withdrawal site:aseannow.com I could barely get 20,000 out of a new BBL ATM "slot" style, it took significant force to pull the cash out. Obviously, the "trough" style offers less physical limitation. Given the 200 baht minimum fee (0.25% of the transfer amount Baht 200 Min., Baht 500 Max) for incoming SWIFT transfers, and the lower TT rate (34.07 - TT vs. 34.16 - Visa/~ nowish), it is probably better to eat the ATM fee for withdrawals up to ~ $750. Amounts greater than that require may two pulls, and a 440 baht total fee. So go with a SWIFT transfer or a counter withdrawal. This assumes that the ATM fee is NOT reimbursed, no foreign exchange fee and no SWIFT fees. -
Trump Plans new Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China
bamnutsak replied to Social Media's topic in World News
We can't stop fentanyl usage/demand. We can't stop (all) fentanyl being smuggled in. So Trump wants Mexico and Canada to do this for us. Maybe his version of outsourcing? I think most fentanyl is produced in Mexico with precursors from China?
