  1. Do you know Central Embassy? Zara have 2 large units on 2 floors, and they pay zero rent. Other big name brands also pay nothing because they bring people to the mall. I suspect IKEA will have a very good deal as they are a major consumer magnet. I suspect that new IKEA will bring a lot of business because people living lower down Sukhumvit than Thonglor probably can't be bothered schlepping all the way out to Mega Bangna. I live in Udomsuk and I'd rather go to the new Ikea in Phrom Phong on the BTS than have to take a taxi to Mega Bangna, even though MB is a great mall with plenty of good shops.
  2. A bit of a walk? It's less than 400 metres from Louis Vuitton at Emporium.
  3. I see so many men here who don't seem to care that they look like trolls. Overweight, poorly dressed, eyebrows like a privet hedge, more body hair than a moose; added to which they aren't exactly very dynamic individuals, so why would any really attractive, intelligent woman want to even look at them, let alone engage in conversation.
  4. My father was a highly paid expat. We lived in several countries in the Middle East (I was born there) before settling in Hong Kong in 1973. Dad did very well in his career and the family enjoyed annual holidays pretty much anywhere we wanted, so my parent's took us to Africa, Canada, US, S. America and of course all around Asia. I went to international schools and then to a top boarding school in the UK. I skipped Uni because I knew I could use my father's connections to get a job, which I did a few times. Basically grew up very comfortable, never wanted for anything. Life has been great.
  5. Because they agreed on a rate cut for the months of Sept to December. It's been in the news. Google "thailand electricity rate cut" the first result should be from the Bangkok Post detailing it. Or this link - https://www.pattayamail.com/thailandnews/govt-cuts-electricity-rate-to-3-99-baht-per-unit-441023
  6. Well done on being one of the few people responding to calling the OP's friend a she. Most other posters referred to the OP's friend as a he.
  7. Usually so I can enjoy breakfast in the VIP lounge, maybe do an hour or two of work (that has to actually be sent) before the flight. Of course I can do some work on the flight, but it's quite limited without internet access.
  8. Toilets where you go in on the room on your own and lock the door don't need to be gender specific. Toilets where men are standing with their tackle out do need to be somewhat separate so women don't accidentally get flashed.
  9. I'm 56. My waist is 32" and I've always looked younger than my real age. Staying slim and in shape, so you stand tall and straight and moving smoothly and quickly, plus dressing nicely, all helps to keep you appearing younger. Fat people start looking old because they can't move as fast as younger people.
  10. I was born in Libya, spent some amazing safari holidays in Kenya and Tanzania, have yet to go to South Africa but it's on my list. If money was no object then I see no reason not to go check out places I've not been.
  11. @BritManToo Sorry to hear about the accident, hope you heal well and it doesn't take too long to recover.
  12. Where is the bronze car mentioned in the report. I can only see a silver one.
  13. Are you sure that's not the bit of Sukhumvit that extends to the UK 😉
  14. If the OP has paid off his home then 25K a month living frugally for two people could well be 10k on food (for two people) and 15K on insurance (180,000 baht a year for insurance). My basic food bill is only 140 THB a day and I live in Bangkok. I would think in that in the boonies it would be less. Granted a wife would mean 2 people to feed, but a Thai wife would probably mean more variety and more savings. I don't eat rice for example, if I did my food bill would be much lower.
  15. Could be a very good spot to build a small business, like a Boba Tea Shop or something that the students would buy.
  16. I've lived in Asia for 50 years. I'd love to live in an English proper speaking country. Although I'm a Brit aside from 7 years of boarding school I've never lived there (and boarding school really doesn't count as back then we were barely let out!) So if money was no object, I'd probably choose somewhere in the UK. My Russian GF studied in Dublin and she'd like to live in Ireland or England (she has family in London) so I'm trying to figure out if sometime in the next 4-5 years we might be able to do that. I just want to be somewhere that we don't have language issues, where I feel that living there is more secure (no visa issues), where I can own and operate businesses without all the stupid restrictions we have here, where I can buy and own land/property and know that it can be passed down to my family. I love living in Bangkok but having been a foreigner all my life (so far) is wearing real thin.
  17. Despite the typically vague reporting I believe this is a couple from the UK who've had a row while on holiday. Sounds like she grabbed her bag and left, probably not realising both their passports were in "her" bag. Reporting her for theft doesn't sound like the best way to deal with a marital spat, unless he wants to escalate things to the point of divorce.
  18. I just tried with the Wise app here and it says cards not available in Thailand. Can't find any address on the app to change, pretty sure I just signed up with phone number and email address.
  19. The barrier is where to meet them. Or are you the sort of person who would walk up to someone in a shop or on the street and try talking to someone you don't know?
  20. If you've lived here any length of time and speak Thai you'd know that these girls are called Side Line Girls. Go to the Thai Side Line Groups and forums. They are all in Thai but you can use Google Translate.
  21. Thailand might have people who want to put laws in place to stop this, but the poor are a very large voting population and will not vote for a Government that tells them they can't have one vehicle for hauling good and their large families. Try telling a poor Thai that if he wants to take 12 people somewhere they need 3 cars with seatbelts and the cars need new tires every 4 years. Never going to happen.
  22. I want to know how they found a time when the pool was so empty!
  23. What's stopping you from dressing well? Other than it sounds like you have based yourself where people are being slobs. I was just in EmQuartier and Emporium and pretty much everyone was dressed smartly. Just go to places that have higher quality patrons.
  24. As long as you still act like you are young. When I see old people who have given up on trying to look good, have lost their dynamism, no longer want to keep current with technology etc those are the ones I want to have nothing to do with (to the extreme of not even wanting to acknowledge they exist, so I'd rather not have to even see them). On my death bed I hope I'm still interested in the specs of the latest VR headsets and new Augmented Reality Glasses (for example) and reading about new tech even though I won't get to see it.
