  1. look at this one. I'd rather be called white person than Farang to be fair. 😂
  2. This is a troubling comment from that post. I read the Thai too but it doesn't make any more sense than this.
  3. Dirt bikes are tall and could smash your organs on impact? On the other hand even a normal fall can kill you if you if you hit your head on impact with the ground.
  4. and this, yes I agree. It's also 100% possible the woman was to blame and the rider had no chance to avoid her. We're just speculating about possible scenarios, not making official pronouncements.
  5. Bias much ?.... While many motorcyclist are indeed reckless, there are also many pedestrians which show an astonishing absense of self preservation. I'm not sure why you think the riders of 'dirt bikes' are any worse than other riders - perhaps the noise they make has impacted your judgment ? I missed that, shame on me. The dirt bikes and larger bikes in general are fun to drive fast so that's why people get them. It's just a fact those guys are driving faster than other vehicles. The other reason is that often they come off of open roads and don't adjust their pace when they enter a residential area. I see this all the time. It's not JUST them, the pickup drivers transporting produce from the mountains are by far the worst offenders of anyone.
  6. Exactly I live in a similar area and these guys often come in packs and tear through little roads at high speeds. That was my only point I ever made, it's reasonable assumption this guy was doing the same but we don't know that for sure of course.
  7. You forgot the Thai back tattoo. More Thai than Som Chai with his 5 amulets will ever be.
  8. that's a very reasonable assumption. The women may have been standing in the middle of the road waiting for cars to pass and bike slipped through a gap and found her right in front of him without time to react. Many such cases.
  9. yes we know we're making assumptions in lieu of information. It's all fun and games on the internet, why else use the forum? I didn't even know until later there was another article which stated she was crossing the road so at least we know that much. Also note I never condemned that specific individual with certainty, I'm just saying we have a problem with dangerous driving and dirt bike riders are often culprits, Thai or otherwise so it's very possible he was driving like so many of those people I see.
  10. Investigation revealed that Mrs. Kia was crossing the road to get dinner when the accident occurred. Philip was riding his dirt bike alongside his friend, who was on another motorcycle. Police have indicated they will charge him with reckless driving causing death. ... อ่านข่าวต้นฉบับได้ที่ : https://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/2025/01/03/american-man-apologizes-to-family-of-thai-woman-killed-in-dirt-bike-accident/ Could have been both. Going too fast and some person steps out not paying attention.
  11. ok just saw that. Much more information there. Looks like it was in an area with traffic and more possibilities for crashes.
  12. They'll let literally anyone rent any kind of motorbike with or without a license then they're off to races. You could step off the plane first time in Thailand go rent some huge dirt bike because it looked cool, find some YouTube video of Mae On rides and then have Google maps take you straight through some tiny village. Rules of the road only exist in your mind when you're out there. Literally anything could happen, dogs, children, 80 year blind women and you're expected to be watching out for all of them. It's an accident waiting to happen.
  13. Very unlikely there's any video evidence unless it was a security camera on a home. They didn't say where exactly this happened but you can kind of see from the picture it was a small 2 lane road. Here's a random but representative road in Mae On district. As seen on the map this is a very rural area next to the mountains. These dirt bikes amongst others love speeding through the little villages on their day trips. The victim could have been some elderly women who isn't prepared to deal with high speed traffic. The one thing we DO know is that you should always be respectful and never drive fast in residential zones until you're out on the open road. Even if you hit someone and it was their fault the Thais likely won't care and expect you to watch out for others, regardless of what they do. Look how they live right on the side of the road. They step one foot outside and they're on the road. It's an accident waiting to happen so be careful.
  14. Thai people often play "frogger" crossing the road and inch out slowly and wait until the vehicle passes them. This can really confuse tourists that don't know if they're going to fully cross or not so they swerve around trying to avoid each other. I almost hit a person once years ago because I didn't understand this. Eventually I ended up totally stopping in the middle of the road and the guy was so confused as to why I didn't just keep going.
  15. I understand most people here aren't in Chiang Mai and especially not the surrounding the rural areas so you have no context. Why I'm going off is because I am familiar with these areas and I'm telling you there is a distinct culture of motorbike riding which incudes "big bikes", Harleys and dirt bikes and often flying at insane speeds through villages. Both annoying because those bikes are extremely loud and dangerous because narrow roads, dogs, elderly etc... This isn't a Farang problem, they're only a minority, most of them are Thai and they include tourists too from all over Thailand. Obviously if you do this you eventually kill someone. This is obvious to me so I'm not surprised someone got killed under these circumstances and yes it will happen again. Don't forgot about the useless and lazy Thai police that don't enforce basic road safety and could prevent this from happening some times.
  16. She was probably walking along the side of the road as is common rural areas and perhaps turned around too quickly or something and some guy smash in to her because he was going at high speeds on a small narrow road. This could have been an 80 year old women too for all we know and was just not paying attention. Those poor people get terrorized.
  17. bigoted, you mean daily lived experiences? How many bears do you have to see <deleted>ting in the woods before you know that bears <deleted> in the woods?
  18. dude I'm so sick of these people. It was just the holiday season and they swarm me this time of year. I did see some Thai guy on a big bike hit a pickup truck (both of them on driving in the middle of the road around a bend) and broke his leg. 200,000 baht to repair his B&M bike too (I knew a family member of his). F*k that guy. Many such cases.
  19. Quick search tells me this is 9% of the total GDP.
  20. How is Si sa ket getting colder than mountains? makes no sense. Does anyone have proof on their own measurements? Checked Goole and it was 60F at 8:30am in Samoeng and 69F in Si Sa Ket. I can confirm the temps in Samoeng are basically correct.
  21. We don't know anything about this case, the women could be at fault. Point is there are swarms of people (including Thais from s*holes like BKK) driving like maniacs also. There's a culture of this here. Farang on dirt bike on Mae On fits a profile too. Just looking at that guys face I've seen these people before. Very good chance he's to blame here but we'll probably never know.
  22. So many people come to Chiang Mai so they can rent motorbikes and go speeding around without any risks of repercussions like back home. I see them all the time and it gets worse every year. Chiang Mai thanks to its international airport is like a portal which can transport turds from the most far-flung reaches on the earth and throw it right in your face. Some random women living her life in the outer regions of Chiang Mai now has to be worried about literally anyone anywhere in the world arriving in her village and driving like a lunatic.
  23. Follow up to my previous post. Clicking the link should take you to timestamp 6:00. The trailer passes another vehicle and pushes the car in the other lane nearly off the road. And to the 7 dead in the previous video, consider that they were run off the road too while going 125 (they were traveling at that speed) and that's why they hit the tree and now 7 are dead including 2 children. Some reckless drivers are hung but that family is still alive. How is it not moral and just to take the situation more seriously and deliver proper punishments for an act with the potential to kill entire families in a single movement?
  24. probably going too far this time (although he could have killed people) but there's such an incredible problem with road safety in this country having a zero tolerance policy feels like the right thing to do some times. This video just popped up on YouTube. 7 killed including two children who were twins. Maybe a legit accident but how many pickup trucks have you seen driving like maniacs, speeding through narrow gaps to pass, tailgating and all the stuff you see daily here. These people just killed themselves but they could have survived like the Korean man and killed 7 of some other family who were driving safely. Risking getting hung for reckless driving would be a fitting penalty for Thailand and save many lives in the end.
  25. Are you saying wife beating leads to strong and fulfilling marriages? It is actually a fact that there's an inverse correlation between wife beating and divorce in the west, as wife beatings have decreased over time the divorce rate has been rising. Does correlation equal causing though? 😂
