  1. I don't think anyone is joking about it. They're suggesting that it wasn't him simply entering the area that made the wasps attack him, but that he might have interfered with the bike and that the disturbed the nest.
  2. Ridiculous. I wonder if he watched the Thai dramas where "raping someone just shows how much you love them" and then the perp and victim end up together.
  3. Didn't some immigration officers just get "reassigned" for doing the same for a foreign celebrity?
  4. I wonder if they're doing the same for Thai online criminals? Will the second largest sex for sale website now be in their sights? Or is that Thai run and therefore OK.
  5. It is possible. If you understand enough words in Thai, even if you aren't sure about the tones, you can guess from the context and the words in the sentence what is meant. Or you might be able to recognise a specific sentences. Either way, this can make a word clear that might otherwise be ambiguous. When it comes to speaking, you have to get the tone and pronunciation perfect, otherwise Thais will not understand. So speaking is quite different from understanding. ESL speakers have the bonus that even if words in English are mispronounced, incorrectly stressed, and - in some cases - in the wrong order, it's still likely that they can be understood. Hence you have "Thinglish", where Thais can speak broken English with a Thai accent, Thai stress and Thai grammar, and still be understood.
  6. But can you be sure that you don't subconsciously alter the way you talk when you use the phone in a way that you are unaware of, making your Thai understandable? You would need to record yourself in conversation with a Thai who cannot understand you, then play the same words to a Thai over the phone and see if they can.
  7. We could simplify it as something like: "Person A feels that their knowledge of Thai elevates their social status, and by refusing to validate this, person B is lowering their social status, which angers person A."
  8. People doing bad things to someone that they feel has wronged them is not an example of karma. It's just revenge.
  9. The same reason that foreigners in Japan who speak Japanese lose their <deleted> when they get given a menu in English... (They didn't go to the great effort of learning the local language to not be made to feel special for it.)
  10. Research suggests that highly intelligent people are less happy and prefer to spend time alone. ????‍♂️
  11. Even without the typo it's still really bad writing. When would any drowning not take place in an unnerving manner? Are there reassuring drownings? It's really a meaningless addition to the sentence. Similar where the author writes that he was found "in a distressing condition". Just meaningless garbage. "What's his condition?" "Hmmm... I would describe it as one that causes others distress." Wow. So descriptive. What makes it worse, is the fact that the author is described as "a successful freelance journalist who worked with international news organizations before joining Thaiger. With a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from London".
  12. Does anyone react to hearing someone shout for help in Thailand?
  13. I get the impression that most of the people marrying bargirls aren't really of the age to 1, have anyone to bring the girl home to; or 2, give much of a <deleted> about what people think.
  14. Actually, he's oddly obsessed with the men who use or marry bargirls. A little bit of proejction, it seems.
  15. But pretty good to be a Thai man by all accounts. Most girls are really into bad boys and toxic boys, they seem to tolerate being cheated on, and are happy to support their (Thai) men in all sorts of ways. Thai women seem to know there place (or rather where Thai men want their place to be), have very low self-esteem, and in terms of their life experiences probably call "normal" what we would call "abusive". If you ever want to know what type of man is popular in a place, listen to what women complain about. If they say that "men" are all abusive liars and cheaters, that means those are the kind of men women go for, they're just sore they can't keep one.
  16. A member of her gang filming for prosperity. Why not? What are consequences? We don't have those in Thailand.
  17. I think that part of your comment could be true anywhere, until you live somewhere then you find out the true reality of where you are living. I don't disagree, but Thailand does seem have a reputation for being home to the kindest most welcoming and smiley people in the world. And if you mention any of the realities of life in Thailand, you will often get a Thai apologist jumping down your throat calling you a racist "Thai basher" and claiming that all Thai people are perfect and if a Thai was bad to a foreigner then it must have been the foreigner's fault and they deserved it. You can see why people might have the attitude that BB has.
  18. This is also combined with a complete lack of consequences. There's a chance some of these people have never been told "no" or had any of their bad behaviour corrected by anyone in their lives, so they're really like wild beasts when their temper erupts. Even the dad admits that she has behavioural problems and is disobedient. Chances are neither him nor anyone else has ever told her no in any serious way. A lot of the "face-saving" culture in Thailand revolves around not doing anything to ever make someone mad at you, which includes adults disciplining children. How can you properly discipline a child, without risking making them annoyed with you???
  19. Whilst I can sympathise and agree that it's best to try to avoid getting young people into the legal system where they have made one or two mistakes and are willing to correct them, if this is a regular thing then it might be the best thing for everyone to either get her some help or some motivation to stop. I saw a similar thing on a Facebook page that seemed to be dedicated to some sort of psychotic teenage girl who would fight with various people (smaller than her, of course). At least there it was more hair pulling and slapping, but still completely unacceptable to have these kind of unprovoked and normally unfair attacks. If they want to act like gangsters, let them have a taste of what really awaits gangsters when they are older.
  20. It is and it isn't. When you're within a culture, you cannot help but be affected by its cultural norms. Even with other Thais this attitude would be prevalent, add in the fact that it is a foreigner, and the sense of entitlement and "It's your fault because if you didn't come here it wouldn't have happened" comes into play. We become socialised into it. We have no choice to "accept" the treatment a lot of the time. It then becomes the behaviour that we expect. And, of course, we know we have little back-up or recourse should we be wronged.
  21. Bought a septic tank. Did not receive the extension part that was meant to be there. Went back to the store. they checked something on the till, which seemed to confirm they had bought the tank (or the extension part went through the till). They would not give him the extension part as they claimed it only comes with the tank. He asked to buy the part, but they still claimed that the part only came with the tank. It sounds like they could not understand that the tank had not come with the promised extension part. I think VocalNeal has the right idea. Take the tank back and ask for a refund due to missing part, to see if this prompts them to provide the part. I fear, though, that this would end with the shop assistant saying they cannot refund because he has not brought back the extension part.
  22. It says that he agreed to "support her" and the whole thing lasted more than a year, so it sounds like he agreed to effectively pay her a wage. Whether he simply did that out of the kindness of his heart or if he was getting something out of it is another question.
  23. Having to be carried away. Acting like a petulant toddler to the very end.
