Applying for OA in UK
Andrew Dwyer replied to LivinLOS's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I did it, albeit back in 2016, the police clearance using ACRO is straightforward and easy. The medical certificate: There was a lot of uncertainty about this at the time so: I visited a local Thai clinic and got it signed for 360 baht with just the usual temperature check and weight/height checks. In the U.K. i visited my old GP who I hadn’t seen for at least 25 years, she gave me a letter stating that she had reviewed my records and there was no evidence of any of the diseases stated. I think it boils down to gp’s in the U.K. are unwilling to sign the medical certificate without actually testing whereas in Thailand ……… At the Thai embassy in London the U.K. letter was refused but the Thai certificate accepted. Probably too late to get the Thai certificate signed i guess but don’t accept anything other than the official medical certificate signed in the U.K., a covering letter will not do ( in my case 8 years ago ). -
BYD Seal tips, tricks and help
Andrew Dwyer replied to macahoom's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I did the downgrade, side loaded a load of apps and then upgraded a couple of days afterwards, zero problems and very happy with the results, since January 9th. Short story: mid December. I saw on FB a guy advertising a rear view mirror that is a front and rear camera with 24 hour parking surveillance designed especially for the Seal.( search Sinjet on FB ). I fancied it and went to see him in BKK , he fit the cameras and also the BYD front camera which i had bought previously. Together in the deal was unlocking of the screen for sideloading apps but i wasn’t that clued up about this and forgot to ask him anyway so it didn’t get done. ( page 12 this thread ). Fast forward to Jan 9th. After some failed attempts to side load with others on this thread I returned to BKK and the guy downgraded, loaded whichever apps i wanted FOC and i upgraded a few days later. ( see page 21 this thread ). The OTA returned me back to the latest version as I had already done an OTA around end of Dec. Added YouTube, Google Maps, Waze, Brave browser, Google, YouTube music and GBox ( which allows other apps to be downloaded from within GBox ) also Lazada and FB and some others. Google Maps can now be used in portrait or landscape not available in Apple CarPlay and i also added the charging station overlay. Unlike the BYD browser which can only be used in gear P all apps can now be used on the go including YouTube and anything streamed from the Google or Brave browsers ( not that I would advocate watching videos with the car in motion ). I can strongly recommend the Sinjet guy ( as well as his rear/front camera setup ) particularly if you are in BKK, he also has a colleague working from Chiang Rai. If interested PM me and I will pass on his contact details. -

New car, driving without plates

Got a cash discount at Honda, MG and GWM. Toyota and BYD weren’t negotiating for cash, Toyota would “ sort something out “ if by paying by finance. -
Thai EV Market Remains Unfazed by European Sales Downturn

An EV sounding like a hoover ? Mine is totally silent. Only thing i can think of is the pedestrian warning sounds available on a BYD which can be silenced at the flick of a switch. -

A Seal SUV in all but name, should fit in nicely here for those that prefer the Seal styling to the Atto but wanted a SUV. Should compete with the Deepal SUV recently released. -
Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Toyota are going to really struggle selling this car with such low power figures ( 218 ps for dual motor ! ) low range and a higher price than the competition. Not to mention the ugly plastic wrapped around the wheels …… The Seal Premium at 1,399,000 beats it on power, range, price and looks. It is more on par with the Seal Dynamic for power and range but that comes in at 1,225,000. Unless Toyota plan is to drop the price by about half a million baht I don’t see them selling many. -
What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2024)
Andrew Dwyer replied to Rimmer's topic in Entertainment
Yup, i watched all S01 and loved it, it is an action/fantasy/sci fi/adventure and was right up my street. Not for everyone and I understand some won’t even entertain it but for me it was great. Based on a video game apparently. -
Thai EV Market Remains Unfazed by European Sales Downturn
Andrew Dwyer replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Haven’t seen any of the issues mentioned in the link here in Thailand other than the paint adherence issue on front and rear bumper mentioned already on this forum. Thankfully i haven’t personally had any issue with my BYD and am very happy with the car. The BYD car i bought here is 40% more expensive in the U.K. and on a recent 3 week visit i only saw 1 BYD ( an Atto 3 ) despite having a dealership around 20 miles away. Tesla seemed the most prevalent EV in the area I was staying, with Polestar, MG and Ionic a close second. A lot of EV’s I didn’t instantly recognise such as Corsa, Jag, Peugeot, Kia etc but in the U.K. an EV has a green vertical stripe on the license plate for easy identification. Strangely, after spotting a couple of Tesla’s without the green stripe I learned ( thanks Google ) that the stripe is not mandatory and has to be asked for specifically on registration …… what’s that all about ?? This then became a game of “ spot the EV with no green stripe “, Tesla won that game for whatever reason. -
Replacement LED ceiling light, Translation please!
Andrew Dwyer replied to Daffy D's topic in The Electrical Forum
I bought a similar replacement ( from fluorescent to LED ) and the instructions told me to remove only the starter and retain the ballast. Have changed around 5 and they all work fine. Flickering on start up used to drive me nuts ! -

Your attitude could get people hurt or even killed. Kids: ” Dad, what do those red flags mean ? “ RP: ”how should i know, go on, get yourselves in the water then “ -

Electric Vehicles in Thailand

So this “ EV “ has a 1.5 litre Turbo internal combustion engine and up to 60 litres of fuel in a tank as well as the 40 kWh ternary battery ? But let’s forget that this wasn’t a full EV vehicle and label it together with all EV issues, meanwhile the cause of the accident was believed to be caused by technology also found in ICE vehicles. https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Caixin/Fatal-car-crash-mars-Huawei-s-efforts-to-break-into-EV-market#:~:text=On April 26%2C an Aito, who was in the car. -

This video again ?? Wasn’t this posted a few days ago ? Only 1 minute in it shows an obviously NOT EV running into the back of a truck. The creator of this video is renowned for his anti china and anti EV policies. -
12 month data SIMs - Looking for recommendations
Andrew Dwyer replied to Chillypom's topic in IT and Computers
You can buy an eSIM but i think the cheapest way will be to buy a cheap 1 year data sim from Lazada and ask the provider to convert it to an eSIM to fit to your iPhone. I use a iPhone 13 Max Pro with 1 physical SIM card slot but also eSIM compatible, tired of swapping SIM cards when travelling i converted my True SIM to eSIM and have my U.K. SIM card permanently installed. I can now switch between the two in settings at will or leave both switched on. I believe you can have numerous eSIM’s in an iPhone now. -
12 month data SIMs - Looking for recommendations
Andrew Dwyer replied to Chillypom's topic in IT and Computers
Take your phone to your provider and ask if they can set up ESIM. Or you can try yourself by clicking Settings then Mobile Service and follow the instructions. I had a 1 year data sim from True which I tried to convert to Esim via the iService app but it failed ( due to the passport photo i think although it wasn’t clear why it failed). Went to True shop and they did it quickly although it took 24 hours before it became available and I could remove my physical sim. -
BYD Seal tips, tricks and help
Andrew Dwyer replied to macahoom's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Some good points, albeit the usual comparisons with Tesla. I have to agree that the regen levels in the Premium are very low, maybe we will get one pedal driving with an OTA ( I think MG did this ? ), having come from a car with one pedal i would welcome it. One annoyance that gets me is having to actually depress the button on the door handle for it to pop out rather than just swiping your finger across or taking it one step further to have the car unlock automatically with proximity of the key in your pocket. -
