no not really the New UK passport renewal system is excellent no forms to fill in no forms to sign only put your current passport details into the system upload Photo, photo is reviewed and if approved that's it pay the amount then send your passport and wait approx 3-4 weeks new passport arrives old passport arrives total time is 3-4 weeks currently

to answer you 'YES" however my case is different from most, I hold 2 UK passports due to be a frequent traveler I made an online application to renew my 2nd (alternate ) passport, i sent a letter explaining this and included the letter with my passport i wanted to renew. even the photo is uploaded and reviewed online, so very easy process. I believe if you want to renew your passport it is the same case. its taken approx 30 days, due to a delay in me being able to mail my passport to UK office.
