Tax Return 2025
DaLa replied to John Phuket's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I presume by 'draconian' you mean huge financial penalties that would render me baht-less. In which case I would be on a plane within hours back to the UK. Come to think of it that would be even worse than being baht-less here.....I'm off to the tax office as soon as I've finished my coffee. -
Sorry I can't help with specific details on a remedy. I've had similar problems maintaining a GiffGaff number, ( they cancel the number if you don't use it for 6 months). OTP's are the bane of my life, they frequently don't arrive or exceed the time limits. Again, apologies for having no solution for you , however I can recommend downloading the bank app if they have one to your Thai phone and using that to receive OTP's. I have several and they also have the function of notifying me of any transactions within minutes or even seconds of me using the bank card.

UK Thai embassy issues warning amid anti-immigration protests
DaLa replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I came out to Thailand in 2009 and was here for the political disturbances of 2010. I would have never thought that the future in Thailand was going to be so relatively peaceful and that the UK would degenerate into chaos. Or did I. A solution appeared to have been reached here. I feel that a solution in the UK is a long way off if not impossible. Sad times. -
Exploring Hua Hin in 2024 – An ultimate travel guide
DaLa replied to CharlieH's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
All the positives can also be said about Cha Am where you will get infinitely better beaches and a quieter life absent of horrendous traffic and overrun with tourists for half of the year. -
All the above 'The Real JFK Coverup' has been examined and dissected by numerous people over the last 50+ years resulting in over 40,000 books. This short documentary reveals nothing new in terms of questions and all of the points have been analysed many times over. I have studied this subject for many years ( I was 10 at the time) and place my conclusion firmly in the Occam's Razor box. Oswald saying he was a patsy when he's exiting the building rather than staying in the area along with all the other crowd of onlookers, then going to his lodgings to get a gun , then killing a policeman. The only way I can see that standing to reason is if Oswald was not the Oswald that was in the Texas Book Depository.

No house insurance in Thailand - how normal?
DaLa replied to GypsyT's topic in Insurance in Thailand
If you read the t's and c's of property insurance in Thailand then it's no wonder anyone insures. I used to work for one of the largest insurance companies in the UK and a 'comprehensive' policy was more than favourable to the insured. Here not so much. Then consider that the bulk of properties here have concrete walls and a steel clad roof, makes fire insurance not a priority.- 68 replies

That's two lives ruined. Makes my decision to never be out too late and my mothers advice not to talk to strangers a wise one. Hope it wasn't politics/money/a lady/ religion that caused it. RIP the Aussie.

I can't afford to travel to the theme parks any longer though.

A few years ago a minister in Thailand brought up the subject of dual / gouge pricing for ex-pats. Well that fell on deaf ears. I’ve been here 12 years and using the MRT for the last 7 of those. I’m 70 and took advantage of the ‘senior’ ticket rate…. until last week. New rule was pointed out to me at the ticket counter… Thai only. Emailed MRT and they confirmed this in a reply. Won’t break the bank but I’m starting to think I need to create a rule here that’s in my favour. Regardless I hope me and the other 5 ex-pats in Nothingtodo-a-bhuri hit their bottom line hard by deserting the service.

Bangkok Hotel Deaths: Vietnamese Guide Admits to Supplying Snake Poison
DaLa replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Hate to disagree, but this has the cockney maid written all over it. She had the key to the room and complete access. We are not sure yet of the weapon, but the location's pretty well known. As yet there's no motive, but the the investigators are looking at a connection with the government. Apparently some of the deceased were civil serpents. -
I've just visited China from here in los. Uk passport can obtain 144 hour transit visa obtained on arrival in certain areas ( I visited Guangzhou ). Canadian passport holder can obtain visa free of charge on arrival for 72 hours. Apologies if that isn't long enough.

It appears from the report to the BBC that the gunman was on a roof 150 yards from the podium. In this elevated position a gun shot 'clipping' Trump's right ear would have then travelled on into the crowd of his supporters behind him. If there were a number of shots fired (as can be heard), presumably towards the podium anyone know if this is where the fatality occurred? Looking at video of the shooting the supporters immediately behind don't appear to have anyone injured.

I'd like to address the issue of language here. Firstly I'm useless at languages and learning Thai was never going to be on my list of 'must do's'. So I'm lucky to have a wife that speaks reasonable English, and my first contact with the hospital was with her accompanying me. Both specialist (cancer and radiologist) spoke very proficient English to the point where we could joke together. The majority of the staff had less to no English skills but the whole system works with numbers. You get a number when you arrive and wait to be called by that number (screens to help). Once you have been examined you have to pay the fees by awaiting your number to come up. Same again for collecting any medication. Any time there was a problem, one of the staff would come out of their office and accompany me to the correct place. Also Google translate has the facility to translate any text or document you show it ( take a picture and dump it into the app). Obviously my experience is location specific, but I managed even without my wife for 90% of the treatment and visits. I don't know if the hospital had interpreters but that would have been another option, even to pay for. I'm a year older and 12 pension payments richer so grateful for the help I received.

I was diagnosed with cancer here in los and started treatment immediately. I'm a UK citizen and could have returned there for treatment. So £3k on flights+6 months rent (£4.8k)+ car rental £2.4k against the £10k treatment here. Bored and lonely in freezing UK with 4 walls to talk to, excessive parking fees at the hospital and chaos compared to my experience here. Hopefully I won't have to repeat the experience but in my case treatment here with the most modern ( Siriraj teaching hospital with specialists trained in the US and the most up to date LINAC) was far more acceptable than the alternative. Just get yourself a 'in case' fund.

The EU have a safety regulation mandate being introduced July 7th this year that makes it compulsory for new vehicles to have Intelligent Speed Assistance installed. Back to the main discussion, are we talking 2 beers or 10 beers? Regardless there will be some people who should never drive on 1 beer and there will be others that be quite capable after 3 or 4. This was the subject of discussion at my local a few years ago and the sentiment was roughly the same as it is here. Then the local GP added his thoughts on the matter and introduced to the argument the number of 70+ year olds on medication that would render them just as dangerous on the roads. I presume he would be under pressure for them to keep their licences due to his surgery being in the middle of nowhere.

Hate to disagree but I've been suffering this from my wife for the last 12 years.

I've never heard of anything as incredible and concerning in my 12 years here. It's almost unbelievable.

I have , and it's nowt compared to an English winter in t'north of England. Snow was up to our eyes in depth, we had icicles hanging from our noses and retained 7 layers of clothing for 8 months non stop. We all slept in one bed and shared 1 hot water bottle for warmth which we topped up with weewee during the night. Some nights we would all climb in the fridge because it was warmer and during the day we would take the doors off the rooms and burn them to thaw out. Wonderful memories, the 50's in the UK were glorious times.

Help needed for best way to sell my house in the UK
DaLa replied to Keith5588's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
Choose an agent that has the most properties in your area and price range similar to your property by entering that information into a search. No children = no brainer. I've invested a good amount into my wife's business and property , but what else would I have done with the money, and you are correct about not wanting your lady friend to deal with the sale in the future. If the 'planned' tax change is that onerous there will be enough information on this site to ensure the impact is minimised, either that or there won't be any of us left here. Transfers to you lady friends account seems a good plan and one I would consider, but also I presently pay for many items here by using my UK based cards so I would just say it is savings and not income...how would they know? Buying a property can be quite an invigorating experience at our age , keeps the grey matter ticking over and is a worthwhile legacy, I don't feel as if I'm imposing to say I believe your plans have a great deal of merit in your circumstances. Good luck with it all. -
Help needed for best way to sell my house in the UK
DaLa replied to Keith5588's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
I was advised not to 'burn my bridges' when I moved here 12 years ago. Whist I understand that may be prudent if Keith has family back in the UK , if he's childless as I was then what could happen is that his estate passes to the crown. I invested in my wife's business and even though the money is no longer 'mine' I have had the pleasure of seeing her prosper due to my help. The new tax law proposed for Thailand is still not certain so I don't see that as a problem, Keith can retain his cash in the UK and work around whatever rules come into place later. Letting out in the UK can be a pain and to manage that from Thailand can mean most of your income is lost to agents. At the end of the day neither of us know what Keith's lifestyle/wishes/plans are, and that will influence greatly his financial decisions. -

Help needed for best way to sell my house in the UK
DaLa replied to Keith5588's topic in UK & Europe Topics and Events
I am pretty certain that if the property you own in the UK is your sole property then it is exempt from CGT. My advice on sole agency is to find the agent that has the most penetration in the price and area of your property rather than multiple agents. There has been an increase in internet agents and I would expect that in todays market a good number of people wishing to buy a property are searching on-line. Good luck, I hope you sell quickly and can enjoy your permanent stay here. -
