  1. That is correct. It was under Thaksin that all the visa loopholes started closing and the alcohol restrictions started coming into force, thanks to pogroms by his mate Purachai, the ultra-conservative. Used to do my visa through The Wall and Vinnie the Visa back in the day, no need to leave the country. Pop over to the pub, sign the book, pay the fee, leave the passport, have some grub and a couple of beers, game of pool and all sorted. Pick up a week or so later.
  2. They already did that last century with mass Chinese immigration.
  3. All things designed to 'keep us in our place' and thus will never be changed.
  4. It's 100% true and widely reported at the time. Some posters seem annoyed that I posted it though. ????
  5. I was here and remember it at the time, which is why I posted it. If you think anything has changed among the Sino-Thai elite then I have a bridge to sell you.
  6. Hard to stop the uneducated dum dums from doing this sort of thing when this sort of stuff is condoned at the very top: Kenyan conservationists reacted with anger yesterday to news that a Thai zoo to which animals are being exported in a controversial deal is planning to serve an exotic game buffet to VIP guests. Guests at the opening of the Chiang Mai night safari zoo in northern Thailand will tuck in to a menu featuring tiger, lion, elephant and giraffe. Plodprasop Suraswadi, director of the zoo project, told reporters that guests will pay 4,500 baht (£64) each for a meal in which dishes range from locally reared dog meat to lion from Africa. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2005/nov/19/animalwelfare.kenya
  7. 18 years after the tragedy and they still haven't managed to implement this, probably down to lack of maintenance and lack of funding. They were happy enough to dip the till for the charity donations though.
  8. Maybe just his Twitter account then, as I don't use Facebook. Glad it wasn't only me that noticed it.
  9. Sales, not consumption. There is no law against consuming a beer on the beach.
  10. I think you will find only alcohol sales are banned on beaches in Chonburi, not consumption.
  11. You have no evidence he was disregarding cultural etiquette. Now go away.
  12. IMO stickboy was at least ten years to late to the scene to have enjoyed it properly. The bitterness and annoyance exhibited in his social media was a result of knowing that.
  13. No, he was not breaking any laws or doing anything wrong. You are just victim blaming.
  14. Lesson: Never, ever, and I mean ever, lend a Thai money unless you reconcile yourself with never seeing it again.
  15. How can this be? ???? It's only motorbikes that have accidents here, most Thais are great drivers etc. ????
  16. In Pattaya? ???? Loads of better things to get offended about, a guy sitting alone on the beach swigging a beer is waay down on the list. What business is it of two Thai men whether the foreigner is wearing a mask? He's outside, alone and not bothering anyone. Leave him be. Likely the two Thai males were high on drugs or drunk, possibly both and were out looking for trouble.
  17. Why? It's a tourist resort and the beach is a nice place to sit and chill of an evening.
  18. Could be the Thais being on drugs or drunk, having no money, just being belligerent etc. Seen many unprovoked incidents in my 31 years here.
