Thai government plans 7% VAT on imported goods from May
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If VAT collection is similar to the UK. The vendor or sales platform pays all the costs of collection. The VAT is added to the basic price automatically and what you see is the cost of the item plus VAT which is what happens now in Thailand. The vendor keeps 1 or 2 percent as payment for making the collection and submits the difference to the government every 6 to 12 months. This actually makes things easier and cheaper for the vendor/sales platform since now all they have to do is submit 5 or 6 percent of their total sales rather than splitting sales between VAT and non VAT goods. -
Thai doctor in Swiss expat case says she has ‘stress’
RobU replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
She was in the right. The steps were not on his property they were on a public beach. She had every right to sit there. -
Because they perhaps are sweet and gentle like my wife who was 57 when I married her

Perhaps you should check the literal translation. It literally translates to Bride Price no matter what is said on an unofficial website that is in no way connected to the Thai government it belongs to a law firm and has no official standing. The website is aimed at English speaking foreigners and the authors have obviously decided to dumb down and have used dowry instead of bride price because they think that's what you understand
-
No it's not. Bride Price is the English translation for sin sod
-
It's not a dowry. A dowry is paid to the husband
-
How many times do I have to state this The Thai Tradition of paying the bride's family is not a Dowry. It is a Bride Price paid to the Brides's family (Not to the bride) as payment for her upbringing, the bigger the bride price the better her upbringing. It is a one off payment and should never be paid more than once A divorced woman does not attract a bride price since it has already been paid to her family by her ex-husband's family. A woman who has children by another man does not attract a bride price A Dowry is given to the husband in primitive societies where women are not allowed to inherit or own property or wealth The Husband holds the dowry in escrow for his wife On the husbands death the wealth and property is passed to the nearest male relative, the dowry is given to the widow for her to survive on, she has no rights to any of her husband's wealth or property. If the husband chooses to divorce his wife, he gives her the dowry for her to survive on, he is not obliged to make any further payments. I am constantly surprised by the lack of understanding of Thai tradition exhibited by the media and the mixing up of 2 entirely different systems

PM Blasted For Saying Cannabis Policy Yielded Bad Results
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes it is just as bad as alcohol which damages the liver and can increase aggressive traits. So combine the 2 and you have an aggressive paranoid with liver damage (characterised by yellow pigmentation of the skin) feels ill all the time, who gets very angry and dangerously aggressive when neighbours ask him to turn the music down because he thinks it isn't loud and they are picking on him for nothing. -
Foreigner condemned for driving car on Kamala Beach in Phuket
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Children and tourists do not expect a car to be driving at high speed along the beach it is supposed to be a safe place away from traffic and hence are not vigilant. A child could have easily run in front of this idiot and been killed on its way to or from the sea. 50000 baht fine and imprisonment is appropriate -
PM Blasted For Saying Cannabis Policy Yielded Bad Results
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It also damages the aural (hearing) nerve. Hence the loud music usually coming from potheads houses. Causes paranoia when smoked excessively. Often taken in conjunction with alcohol. There seems to be a strange assumption that people who take cannabis do not drink alcohol the 2 drugs are not mutually exclusive. -
Russian couple’s dine and dash attempt exposed in Phuket restaurant
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
It's not as if dining out here is particularly expensive. If they can afford to travel here they should be able to afford to pay for services or simply buy street food -
3 year old Thai girl injured in Pink Line MRT liquid cement incident
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Why was the road underneath open when construction work was going on directly overhead? It seems to me that the city is partially to blame for this. Where was the city oversight of the work? -
Lack of maintenance, poor build quality. It seemed to become apparent with the poor woman who had her leg amputated by a badly maintained travelator at swampy airport. Soon there will be a major incident possibly a few deaths. When will they learn that constant inspection and proper maintenance is necessary on all public facilities
-
You have your opinion, however small narrow motorcycles are a much better form of transport than cars, in congested cities, and can cut through traffic when cars can't. They are also cheaper to buy, run and maintain. Posing in fast cars is one bad trait that Thai police don't have
-
I agree
-
Here's a thought, why should they risk their lives for peanuts? Low wages, debt having to buy their own equipment. I don't know about police widows pensions and disability pensions but I'll bet they are virtually non existent
-
1. Pay a decent salary 2. Supply all equipment required to do the job, free of charge. (I understand traffic cops have to buy and maintain their own motorbikes, I don't know if they have to buy their own uniforms) 3. No on the spot fines, all fines must be paid at the court. 4. All weapons to be supplied by the force and checked and maintained by an armourer. When a policeman is retired, sacked or suspended all weapons should be handed in and accounted for. 5. Proper investigation of corrupt practice by an independent authority Policing can be a dangerous job police run towards trouble when prudent citizens run away. Police officers can feel alienated from the people that they protect and think they may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb so start taking bribes.

Thai woman seeks refuge in temple after being beaten by Austrian husband
RobU replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
You have a point. Hope against hope that she will change and she continues her behaviour. Exactly the same as the beaten wife syndrome except it is the man who constantly forgives and tries to make things work. Beaten women sometimes resort to poison of abusive partners men in a similar situation tend to be more spontaneous they crack up and use their fists. -
According to other sources bits fell off (again) and damaged a car and a motorbike. Parts of the system were found scattered over the road below. I don't understand how the owners of this company and other big businesses get away with poor maintenance and dangerous installations. One day there will be a major incident where one of the trains details and falls to the ground
