To US Expats in Thailand only. It's about your wallet.

Back in the days before the Euro... -
Was in KL over Christmas / New Year's and caught short in a thunderstorm just by Gleneagles Hospital, so ducked in until it passed. Passed the time by enquiring into costs, Basic private rooms were 250 Ringits per day (including food), or £40 / US$ 50 / AUD$75 or THB1700. Initial Consultation was 350 Ringits, follow ups was 250. Everyone I spoke to spoke excellent English. Don't know about Thai private Hospitals, but compared to BUPA in the UK, an absolute steel.

As others have said, using USB you can boot from that device. However, not all code / Apps are written to use the environmental variables, by that, as opposed to recognising what device or Drive letter you booted from, the software is hard coded to use C:\ for your boot / system drive, so if your old Windows hard drive is recognised as C:\ when you boot from your USB, then as the Windows directory structure exists, you might find Data & Applications are referenced or stored on that old drive. As OneMoreFarang says, if you don't need to access the old drive, then physically disable it (can be done in the BIOS) or remove it.

A Fax is still considered a legal document, whereas a signed / scanned document attached to an e-mail isn't. A Fax is encrypted end-to-end between the transmitting and receiving machines, whereas; an e-mail on the other hand will pass through any number of gateways / routers / servers before being opened by the proposed recipient, or not due to lack of end-to-end encryption. Having said that, the UK has passed a bill that will allow the 2 main carriers (BT and KCom) to withdraw the PSTN (old fashioned land lines) Network by 2025, so faxing to / from the UK will be obsolete then. In terms of addressing the security question lost by faxing, UK banks have introduced their own Secure e-Mail systems, so as a customer you can e-mail signed documents as part of the Bank's own e-mail system. Apparently 43% of companies in Germany still use fax as a means of communication.

For the UK, Google your nearest RYA (Royal Yachting Association) center. Various courses covering powerboats. Level 2 a minimum if you want to hire/ charter upto 10m. There are RYA schools in Thailand, so you could make it a working holiday whilst you learn the ropes.

UK and foreign TV series ( with English subs )
RayWright replied to Speedo1968's topic in IT and Computers
RARBG and LimeTorrents covers my fix of Old/New UK / Aus or US TV series. 80%+ includes English Subtitles, else there are a couple of Subtitles websites (SubScene & OpenSubtitles) you can download them from. If using VLC for playback, then open the Subtitles file once you've loaded your movie. Or, if you're okay with computers, then use the MKVToolNix suite of programs to embed your Subtitles into a .mkv file, so you just double-click to play. -

Ah! Mrs Scaramanga, we have been expecting you. Do you have any unique personal "attributes" that could identify yourself? -
Vinyl over Ceramic Tiles?

Ah the dulcet tones of the analogue recording. Yep, more warmth and the artwork was always a must. Hours spent trying to decipher the inner meaning of the Scandi 1975 classic Nuclear Nightclub by Wigwam , Virgin Records (V2035). -
I believe Sabine Schmitz's record in am unmodified Transit Van still holds at 10:06. Admittedly bits were removed, but no added performance advantages. Much more impressive.

Sending a new Samsung phone to my wife
RayWright replied to PhoSai's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Another thing to consider is; if the "Postal Service" you choose accepts mobile phones for shipping. Due to the fact most phones now have sealed batteries and the potential fire risk that might create when shipping. With prices in Thailand, I would go for a local purchase over shipping, unless you personally bring the phone out as hand luggage. Most airlines (ie Thai Airlines) don't allow mobile phones as hold luggage. -
The Lavender Hill Mob, 1951 Ealing Comedy with Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway. There's that Madonna fight scene in the 2002 James Bond Die Another Day with Pierce Brosnan, in reality stunt double Steven Paul. For a "heavier metal", then former silver medalist in the 1998 and 1999 World Championships and Team GB Olympic Foil champion and 5th place in Sydney 2000, then none finer than Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame. In terms of Alec Guinness then the Star Wars saga, after all Light Sabrering is a form of dueling!

Getting a IBAN bank account
RayWright replied to bubblegum's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I use KBank, so transfer (UK or Aus) using their HeadOffice Swift code. Quoting my account number, funds clear in my account within 5 or 6 working days. -
Learnt my lesson last year, so scheduled a number of work events in the UK! Smug over a pint of Tanglefoot and Badger real ale, Beef and Guinness pie to follow with crumble and Cornish clotted cream for afters.

As Worgeordie says need to understand model numbers to then check capacity and check they are correctly sized for the size of room. Other factors to consider are room materials ie brick /wood and glass, plus any openings. You mention new build, are there any other identical houses with tenants, as you could canvas them for their feedback. If A/C units incorrectly sized, then down to the sales contract, if stipulated. I had a similar experience in England over incorrectly sized boiler in a new build, they installed for a 1 bed flat not a 2 bed house. Redress was I had to pay for my own replacement, hence any future Buy-2-Lets I did my own full surveys. Tried asking for the specs of the A/C units in my Thai rental condo, as well as the service logs, was told "not possible". Luckily they work, plus I pulled a "not working okay" request to get a service visit, which my Landlord duly oblieged too. Next one due in June.

Have used KeePass for a number of years, and even deployed it in my last Financial Services Company. When using "Special Characters", most organisations will detail the range to select from, which is most of the non Numeric and Upper / Lower case characters on the keyboard. So potentially you can have a 97 Character Character-Set for passwords using the traditional English keyboard. Numbers = 10 Upper case = 26 Lower case = 26 Special Characters = 35 ! #$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~£¬" However, there are many more characters available using the ALT+<Numeric Keyboard>. (NB The caveat is knowing how your computer has been setup in terms of Language, Fonts, Locale / Region and also physical keyboard, plus the application you're using to create the characters.) The <Alt> Codes were initially created by IBM using a 3 digit number, however Microsoft expanded on this to create the ANSI Character set. Currently there are nearly 150,000 codes across the Unicode character set. So, typing <Alt>+0128 will give me the Euro currency symbol, €. Typing <Alt>+128 gives the Ç symbol. So for Japanese Yen, <Alt>+190, ¥ and for spelling Cafe correctly, then Caf<Alt>+130, Café Using Word / Outlook / Excel, then on my Computer I can get the Thai Baht Character by using <Alt>+3647, yet using my Chrome browser onto AseanNow.Com, gives a Question Mark, as the character isn't recognised / mapped. To add extra security, then replacing the letter O in a word with a numeric Zero, same for 3 for an e, or 1 for the letter L or i expands the number of characters within your character set. Moving into European languages, then make use of letters with ascents, so the word Ape, could become Äpé, or AseanNow could be written as ŧÆnN©w, the letters ea are reversed and written as a diphthong. For added complexity, use a Pass-Phrase rather than an individual word, so Th3ShopN€xtD00r as opposed to 711 would be much more secure. So in terms of how secure my KeePass file is, then, I'm using a pass phrase of 32 Characters in length, from a Character Set of nearly 150,000 characters. Let AI or even a brut force attack from the Goddess of Ultimate Power try and crack that within my lifetime!

Main Customer Services numbers for Lloyds are 0345 300 0000 or from abroad then 01733 347 007, add the +44 prefix and drop the leading UK zero from the front of the numbers, both of which will connect you to the UK Contact Centers. Emergency numbers are 0800 096 9779 or 01702 278279. Emergency Cash are 0345 982 5304 or 01702 278274. As said above, get a Skippy Account, as a lot cheaper than using Roaming charges. If you're on AIS mobile, then prefix with 003 44, again drop the leading Zero.
