  1. They still deserve the deposit back for the first year written contract. They would need to pay another deposit for the new verbal contract. A written contract would need to be extended in writing. You can't flip flop between written and verbal.
  2. Be careful what you post. A lot of people are falling on hard times and there's the whole defamation thing here. People will do what they need to do for money.
  3. Looking for a business partner. Qualifications: Must have cash. Objective: A bar where it's cool & relaxing to hang out. References: My Gf. Experience: Running a bar. Contact: My nut.
  4. No harm in asking, worst case they say no. Gives you a head start on looking for a new unit and they lose a month or two looking for a new tenant along with a possible broker fee of one month.
  5. I feel like I'm in that same situation, (in my case I was way too early) although I don't think I would have much luck getting an enjoyable job back in the Usa at my age. That's probably the reason why I move around a lot like Run Tum Tugger and always rent. More then one year in one location one does tend to run out of new things to do around that area, and if you're not working that can be a problem. Not being able to work at most anything or own land are additional drawbacks in Thailand that seem to push people into spending at bars, etc rather then building their situation in life. Maybe the older retired are stationary because they have to be, not because they want to be.
  6. You're a man of means, with ample resources, and the character and willingness move on and absorb such losses.
  7. There's a way of getting it off that does not require cutting. The whole area is lubed and then a piece of plastic fishing line is placed under the ring between the ring and skin. Grab both sides of line and rotate 360 degrees in one direction until the ring comes off.
  8. Not everyone can find a universe in a grain of sand.
  9. I considered spain and portugal several years ago and rejected it. Can't remember why I never followed through, but it must have been a visa problem. I'm from the Usa.
  10. I did not care for jomtien. it made me feel old!
  11. Technically you deserve the deposit back at the end as it says on the lease that you both signed. A verbal agreement does not override a signed lease.
  12. I don't see many happy people sitting in bars utilizing the services of prostitutes, do you?
  13. Many end up drinking and sitting at bars and/or having relationships with prostitutes.
  14. Thailand is a virtual obstacle course for the handi-capable, but it is possible.
  15. Depends on what it is being compared to. There are a lot of blokes from lower economic demographics in the Uk for example, where just having a beach nearby is luxury. That's why there is such differing of opinions. There will never be a 100% agreement. I met people in Cambodia who thought they were living the high life because they had a view and a balcony.
  16. Maybe with a large arrears tax bill & a lump sum sitting in your retirement account in a Thai bank.
  17. Fortunately, I actually "bring in" very little to Thailand. As long as worldwide income is not taxed I'm Ok. Btw, all the thai based health insurance policies I have seen have a 180 residency requirement to be valid so that puts you in the tax window if you want to be covered.
  18. I went into my usual noodle soup shop recently and the server said there was a 30 minute wait! Not that crowded inside that time, but backed up orders on apps for delivery. I'm used to getting served in 3 minutes! Other times the place is getting busy with Chinese. They keep loudly ordering for more and more dishes while they are eating so other people waiting can't order, or just keep asking for things and won't shut up. Then they leave a disaster area with used napkins all over and food and seafood shells on the bare table with what looks like intention. Many places putting up signs now saying to not leave napkins on the table. The Chinese are going to cause a problem the more that are let in. The Thai's are already getting irritated about it.
  19. Have you been to 'The Castle' on 3rd road?
  20. Sounds like a relationship made in hell.
  21. I gave up on medical professionals in Pattaya.
  22. My neighbor bought his and it seemed like a dumb idea to me. How long would he want to live here? I'm ready to go before one year. To just retire in one spot is kind of dumb I think. There is no reason for a single guy to be here that long, unless you were working or there was another anchoring factor, when you could live a year on the islands or whatever by renting.
  23. I don't think it's all accidental falls. Maybe people doing it on purpose due to financial or emotional problems. It's guys that are around a lot of booze and hookers and that lifestyle can get a bit crazy if you don't have control. You pick up on other people's problems. Their problems become your problems. Often you can't tell just by seeing your neighbor who says hi and appears ok.
  24. Thailand in general is feeling a bit funky. I could just be tired of it after 10 years off and on, but it has a funk that it did not have before. Could be that I'm in Pattaya but I'm not 100 % sure if that's it or not. I can't think of specific reasons, it's just a feeling.
