  1. Now you know why they call them /phríkˑkhîiˑnǔu/ (literally rat faeces chillies).
  2. Have they worked out which Senator was responsible for stepping in wet cement?
  3. XE is not tax specialists and has no special knowledge of Thailand. The various Thai accountancy sites that I've previously looked at make no mention that money brought to Thailand is automatically liable for income tax. For a start, it may not even be income, but rather capital.
  4. Nothing to worry about. Gift tax is only applicable on gifts above 10 million baht for non-relatives. https://sherrings.com/gift-tax-law-in-thailand.html
  5. Foxx

    Rant.

On the plus side, he's probably not going to live very long.
  6. Which is absolutely ridiculous. 10,000 baht spent a non-Thai produces just as much economic stimulus as 10,000 baht spent by a Thai adult. More people spending = more economic stimulus. Or is this really just evidence that it's an electoral bribe since non-Thais can't vote?
  7. In the past I've always requested the bank letter the day before I visit Immigration and can then pick it up the next day (i.e. the day I visit Immigration). The letter's typically available around 11:30. Something to do with Head Office having to produce it. I then drive to Chaengwattana, arriving around 2:30 p.m. With the new-ish appointment system the latest I can get an appointment is 2 p.m. which is cutting it very fine, even if I put my foot down. Would they accept a letter from two days before? (Plus, of course, an updated passbook.) Thanks
  8. The contention is very well supported. This is simply the first source I could find.
  9. There times "literally" in that short extract. How else are farmers going to strew rice? Metaphorically? For that matter, they don't "strew" the rice - it's not scattered untidily (which is what the word means), but rather raked into a thin, even layer.
  10. Basic services. Not something I'd personally want to rely on in case of a stroke or heart attack, or even a bone breaking accident.
  11. Retiring 5 hours away from the nearest half decent hospital? Seems like folly to me.
  12. Retribution? No! Retribution is in response to some sort of attack. It's also a massive understatement of what happened under Mohammed. Consider the case of Banu Qurayza (a Jewish community). All the men and adolescent boys were beheaded, and all the women and children taken into slavery (and slavery here includes sex slavery.) No one knows how many men were murdered. Estimates range from 300 to a thousand or more. And all because the Jews refused to accept Mohammed as a prophet in the line of the Jewish prophets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Banu_Qurayza
  13. The footprint is hardly unique in Thailand. There's also a very famous one at Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi. Globally there are more than 3,000. They are originally associated with the early centuries of Buddhism when replicas of the historical Buddha were not used (in accordance with Lord Buddha's instructions). For example, at Sanchi (3rd century BCE), he is represented variously by a tree or an empty chair.
  14. It's not a rant, but simply a statement of fact. If you think otherwise, try educating yourself. I'd suggest starting by reading the Koran, a book that Muslims believe is the literal word of their god - a book packed with murder, rape, paedophilia, blatant racism, &c. ,&c., all headed by the religion's prophet who Muslims believe is the perfect man and role model.
  15. What good does that do when any criminal can buy a TSA lock key for less than 35 baht on Lazada? For example: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/kateva-tsa002-007-tsa-i4281712773-s16998343316.html
  16. Generally true. However, you can probably open an account with Wise and get a debit card, provided you've got a European address for delivery of the card. They're less fussy, certainly, than UK banks. Better exchange rates/lower fees, too. I now use my Wise card for pretty much all my purchases here.
  17. I guess you can't read Thai. The phrase actually reads (in transcription) mây sày phǒŋchuurót MSG meaning "no add MSG". There's no added MSG in it at all.
  18. "A drug infamously touted by Donald Trump has been linked to nearly 17,000 Covid deaths in a new scientific study. Researchers say that the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine was prescribed to patients during the first wave of Covid-19 “despite the absence of evidence documenting its clinical benefits.” The French study estimated that 16,990 patients in the US, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Turkey may have died as a result of the drug." 19. Actually, sounds pretty reasonable. The automated gates are only intended for tourists; individuals with longer term visas are stuck, with the old queuing and procedures. This was reported by the Bangkok Post, but I'm not allowed to post a link.
  20. At Pulse Clinic, it's 11,550 baht for a pack of 30. https://www.pulse-living.com/product/NDQzMjs= However, (a) they're on the expensive side, and (b) it's out of stock with them.
  21. My partner of 20 years (Thai) and I (British) want to visit the UK following the completion of his Ph.D. in a few weeks' time - touring Scotland and visiting my old friends. It's intended as a reward for the years of hard work he's put in on his research and dissertation. However, technically (well, and actually) he'll be unemployed. The plan is that he'll start looking for employment as a university lecturer after the visit. Is it going to be a non-starter applying for a UK Visitor Visa and just a waste of time and money? Or is there a realistic chance of one being granted? Other information: he owns the house we live in, he has plenty of savings to support himself during the trip, though I'll be paying for all flights and accommodation, and we've made one similar visit a few years ago when he was working and before starting his Ph.D.. Any thoughts? Advice? Thanks.
