Thai Expert Explains High Electricity Bills in Thailand
asf6 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
2,000 MW is 2 GW. In your earlier post you said that a 1-gigawatt reactor would cost around $5.4 billion to build, excluding financing costs, but a 2000 MW nuclear power station using those figures would cost around 1 billion. Would a nuclear power station twice the capacity really be only a fifth of the price? -
Thai Expert Explains High Electricity Bills in Thailand
asf6 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
* I will assume you meant 200 MW rather than 2000 MW. * I will also assume you meant only construction costs rather than the total cost of producing the electricity. [You forgot to attribute a source of your estimated figures. I have attached one below.] https://www.vox.com/2016/2/29/11132930/nuclear-power-costs-us-france-korea But using the figures you provided, here's a bit of maths for construction costs per unit of electricity. 34 billion (baht) ÷ 200,000 (kw) ÷ 365 (days) ÷ 24 (hours) ÷ 30 (years) = 0.646 baht per unit. * I have used a figure of 30 years for the lifetime of the reactor because the IAEA says that "Most nuclear power plants have operating life- times of between 20 and 40 years." ) https://www.iaea.org/sites/default/files/29402043133.pdf -
As kwasaki said, it depends on the landlord. I have only ever paid one month's deposit and then one month's rent in advance. The landlord may allow you to pay 10k now and then 10k on the day you move in ( 1 June), but they might not. They might insist that you pay 10k deposit now and also 10k for this month's rent. You can only ask them and find out their requirements.

The process can go different ways depending on the people involved (you, employers and immigration staff) and how you/they handle it. It's not always necessary to leave Thailand and enter again with a new visa but sometimes it is. There is a lot of paperwork to process and theoretically it can be done in the same day. However, TIT, and it doesn't always work out. The slightest error in the paperwork can throw a spanenr in the works. As for: "what about if the employment in company A ends and the employment in company B starts maybe two months later?" A couple of possibilities: Possibility 1. You cancel your old permission to stay when you leave the old employment. (You employer might insist on it or it might be more convenient for you.) Possibility 2. You don't cancel your current permission to stay and the old company is willing to write a letter for you 2 months later saying you have left their employment at that later date. (You need to be on good terms with your old employer.) As for: "Does it have any disadvantage if there is a tourist visa in between two Non-B visas?" No, apart from the cost and inconvenience if you have to leave the country. Once you have your paperwork in order for the new job, you should be able to change it from a TR to a Non-B in country.

Don't people only ever have one birth certificate? If the child was born in the US, presumably he has a US birth certificate. I doubt you'll be able to get another one for him. Thai citizenship and a passport should be doable though. I'm not American but I'd guess it would be done via the Thai embassy/consulate in the states.

Most students try to get into the main secondary school for the district (rong-riyan matayom pra-jam ampur โรงเรียนมัธยมประจำอำเภอ) but if they don't get into that one, there will be other secondary schools nearby that they should be able to get into more easily. Those other schools may or may not have entrance tests (some do, some don't), and they will likely have places available for students who can't get into the main secondary school.

One-Way Flight Tickets Into Thailand.
asf6 replied to XB12X's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
^ That's to apply for a visa in the USA before departure. The OP does not need to apply for a visa. He already has a visa/permission to stay as a retired person. -
Tragic End: 14-Year-Old Youth Dies in Motorcycle Crash with Trailer Truck
asf6 replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
I interpreted it as he thought his brakes were stuck on but in actual fact it was the motorbike that was being dragged by the lorry and making the driver feel like his brakes were stuck and slowing him. -
Here are a couple of links that describe the wood (kratin tepa/ไม้กระถินเทพา) and its properties. https://kaset.today/พันธุ์ไม้/กระถินเทพา/ https://www.dnp.go.th/EPAC/plant_economic/02krathintapa.htm Here are 2 points from those links that I noticed that are relevant to the OP. * It can be used in all types of construction that do not require heavy loads. * Strength will increase with age.

There's an app called Badan4Thai from the Thai Department of Groundwater Resources that shows the location of bore holes in Thailand. You can look at bore holes already in your area to find out what depth the others are. That might help you with estimating what depth you need to drill for your bore hole in your own location.

One-Way Flight Tickets Into Thailand.
asf6 replied to XB12X's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I flew back into Thailand this month with a one way ticket. Check in staff (Emirates) queried it but I showed them my permission to stay and re-entry permit and nothing else was said. -
I typically hear ไ pronounced as the English sound made by the letters i and y (as pronounced in the English words: die, tie, cry, by, my, etc) but I have occasionally heard it as you have in the example you gave.

Which Thai vowels are you specifically referring to? Can you type them (in Thai) into a post, please?

Over 50,000 students in Thailand drop out in 2022 academic year
asf6 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The article doesn't say what age the students who dropped out were. If I recall correctly, school students don't have to stay at school after M3. They can go and get a job if they want. -
US defence secretary seeks to hearten Nato relations
asf6 replied to Social Media's topic in World News
It's interesting to see the topic of NATO members defence spending keep coming up. The US were complaining about the same thing 25 years ago! -
^ I don't hear the changes you are hearing. It sounds like standard Thai pronunciation to me. รถคันข้างหลังชนรถเรา rot kan kaang-lang chon rot rao.

It's a very clean nest. Not much sign of bird poop in it. Impressive nest keeping!

Am I right in coming to the conclusion that it costs you about 1.4 baht per km in your EV? (for charging)

Everyone knows that God is omnipotent and can destroy the Earth and all those on it whenever He/She/They/It desires!! Noah had to build and ark to save the animals of the Earth, we have been threatened with fire and brimstone and all sorts of destruction for being naughty. BUT, we are still here - the Earth and billions of people and animals are still on it. So, IMO, God might have been a bit peeved with us from time to time and may want us to change our ways a bit, but despite all of that, we are all allowed to live on so we can't be doing so badly. ???? Carry on regardless.

Myanmar Man Found Dead, Likely Infected With New Omicron Strain
asf6 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I don't think one should link the man's death to the new Covid variant or even Covid at this point. As pointed out earlier in the thread, the article does not actually say that the man's death was caused by Covid - just that he had died and also apparently tested positive for Covid. They (Thairat?) have speculated that he was infected with the new Omicron subvariant XBB. 1.16 due to having a fever, having tested positive for Covid and having red eyes. They (thainewsroom article) actually make it clear in both the headline and in the body of the text that they are not sure at this moment if he had the new variant but that they are speculating that he did. "Myanmar Man Found Dead, Likely Infected With New Omicron Strain" "it is likely he had caught the new Omicron strain which affects the eyes too." It's pretty obvious to a careful reader. Less careful readers might easily infer something different and perhaps become alarmed. . -
27 Omicron XBB.1.16 cases detected in Thailand by April 17th
asf6 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Interesting. I was just reading about that this afternoon. "Peak weekly COVID-19–associated hospitalization rates among children aged 5–11 years were higher during the Omicron-predominant period than during the Delta-predominant period." https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7116e1.htm One reason for the rise in hospitalisations amongst children during the early Omicron days was apparently due to the shift of infections to the upper respiratory tract. “Omicron subvariants BA.1 and BA.2 seemed to migrate from [infecting mainly] lungs and nervous tissue to the upper airways." "Omicron causes clinical symptoms mostly related to the upper respiratory tract with minimal symptoms from the lower respiratory tract" https://www.bmj.com/content/380/bmj.p3 And because: "children's upper airways are smaller, so they were more affected by the aforementioned shift in viral behaviour with omicron." https://www.bmj.com/content/380/bmj.p3 . -
^ Very nice. What kind of bird are they?
