  1. I don't know of anyone who has died. A village 3 down from me currently has a security of health workers and the law at all entrance and exit points. Inside the village it seems business as usual with large numbers working together cutting rice. Elections this sunday so the masses will be out everywhere.
  2. I changed earlier this month from marriage to retirement. Saved me about 140 print outs, two ink cartridges,a trip to the amphur and another trip back to KK to pick up passport. The IO was also happy with the decision.
  3. Not sure about hydroponics KS. If your rice seed has been graded and a germination rate of 99%,99 out of the 100 will sprout. That result may change by planting time if not stored correctly but that's the same for any seed. Finished rice harvest yesterday,4 ton still out being sun dried then will start the cleaning and bagging process then hurry up and wait to see what the prices do. All the neighbours extremely happy with their results this year. Won't be long and most of the rice will be finished around here and everyone will move onto the sugar. Time to clean the harvester.
  4. Well we got our man. Watched the draft on fox footy last night. Not the best tv viewing going around but good to see the kids stepping up to the big time after not much footy over last two years.
  5. That sounds about right KS. Hom mali's potential around here according to the Ag research centre is 360 kg/rai. So far we are going about 260 kg/rai on a very weed infestered field. Our costs for the hom mali work out at 1200 baht/rai with half of that charging myself 600 baht/rai for using the harvester. So the profit could be anywhere between sell now 750 baht/rai or get government subsidy and make 2700 baht/rai which is still not a lot and income from a 2nd crop of sesame, corn or sunn hemp needed to top up. The most pleasing thing about growing rice this year besides hearing the seeds rattling into the harvester box has been no lodging at all. On the keeping seed,it really needs to be dried to 10%,cleaned and germination tested. Not worth the hassel for me,easier to get seed from the Ag station which is proven to use low seeding rates.
  6. Hi KS I apologize as pushed on harvesting yesterday and today went for a moisture check but forgot to ask about the broken rice price even though i discussed with my wife on the way there. Will ask in a couple of days time. Found out today 3 days of sun drying is bringing the moisture down to 17-18% so will now be parked up for another 2-3 days waiting for drying space. My moisture meter works fine on corn and sunn hemp but is not reading the rice well so a pia 70 km round trip for getting tests done.
  7. We missed it for the 1st time and i probably won't live it down. It's to get rid of the bad spirits for the year so anything that goes wrong from now on will be my fault.????
  8. For the life of me yesterday i spent quite a bit of time trying to find what the broken rice price is at the animal feed mills but came up empty handed. And whether a big rice year would decrease feed prices. I'm parked up tomorrow with rice harvest, run out of space for drying. So will do a run to the millers to see how our sun drying seed fairs moisture wise. 5 ton of cowneo bagged and stored,5 ton of hom mali on the blue mesh drying. Hom mali is going well, tbh i thought 5 ton would see it out but having only harvested 20 rai of the 68 rai expectation is looking brighter. Anything that matured late looks to have some rice sheath rot so will keep an eye on that.
  9. So let me get this straight. Paine is stepping down because of an incident before he was made captain. And as Stokes lines up to bowl i'm thinking well he got a 2nd chance. I think Carey deserves the nod first Will only just. I would also back Marsh into open with Warner. Norf out of dept, well done.
  10. For much of the population it's comfort to know that water runs downhill.
  11. That gave a chuckle,we've been sun drying the cowneo rice and it has been left in the hands of mama and papa as their wisdom should show through and not to upset the apple cart. Nobody knows what the moisture was to start with and nobody knows what it is bagged at. I got a funny look when i was off to the millers today to get a proper sample done.
  12. With the cowneo rice now sun dried and finishing bagging tomorrow i thought a good time to get a sample off the hom mali. Took a header sample about 11am then off to town to the millers to get it sampled. As not growing before for other than family consumption it was an eye opener. The 1st thing i noticed was a ute load of bags being sampled, they only took samples from the visible bags on top, good to know. Pricing board, hom mali high price 9 baht and low price 7.5 baht. The man did our sample which involved moisture test 29.8% Then he weighed 300 grams into a bowl which went through a screening machine, screenings = 4%,he did mention screenings should be 3% That was it as to high in moisture for the milling test. He said with those results we would get the 7.5 baht. So got home and did some quick calcs not taking into account a possible deduction for the milling loss, just on moisture alone by the time you work out the weight loss to get the 9 baht your only really about 15 satang better off for all the extra required work. Of course the trouble of drying and storing is beneficial for two reasons,a general increase in price later in the year and the price scheme if you qualify. But i'm starting to see why the Thai farmers eliminate all the risk and go straight from the field to the millers.
  13. So what should i be worried about, that's the only local data i keep.
  14. The key to Greenwoods signing is he is an inside mid Left footer. Jason Horne-Francis is also a Left footer All of Norfs midfield last year were Right footers so a no brainer to add Hugh as a mentor and give the midfield flexibility. Here we come????
  15. In my location in Thailand i've kept rainfall figures for the last 17 years. Lowest 35 inches, highest 70 inches. So a year like this we got an extra 3 decent rain events which takes it to the upper level. And i hardly call 35 inches a drought so i would consider it that i live in a pretty reliable area of Thailand.(Khon Kaen province)
  16. Trying is right,my last 3 visits to different stations has see the prices all above 30 baht.
  17. Started harvest on the cowneo rice this afternoon. Will have to get my moisture meter checked,it was only reading 8.5% although the grain did feel very dry when standing in it. 1636882316813.mp4 1636882340613.mp4
  18. How did you purchase the land. Pui yai ban and locals, paid in cash and land paper handed over in original owners name. All parties signed a standard document. Also does your wife pay the tax on the land at local tambon? Sorry a lot of questions. I would think no problem to sell if to someone living in that tambon. Also try the pinned topic above, forest enchorgement.Put in your details and see if the land has a value.
  19. Hi, Do you have access to a picture of the mills receipt regarding dockage for moisture, screenings, weed seeds, colour and weight. 8 baht sounds like the quality of rice was very good. Was that hand cut and threshed or by harvester.
  20. What i say a lot of people don't want to hear who are concerned about the climate,in our location we are benefiting from this change. Over population will never be addressed by society so it is what it is.
  21. We rely on thunderstorms for the majority of rain during the growing season so it will always vary. If anything we plant earlier but a lot of that has to do with modern techniques rather than seasonal change.
  22. If in the boonies the OP's friend could try at Amphur level. After hearing nothing from Expatvac and being knocked back from previous walk ins i managed to get Sinovac the other day now all the community is welcome to go. It will be followed by AZ and i used my pink id card, not passport to register. I guess if he wanted they would give Sinovac x 2 but they wouldn't do AZ x 2 when i asked.
  23. Went for a trip to local Ag extension this afternoon to clarify the situation. Don't be surprised that i'm still none the wiser, well a little. At the time of registering with the pui yai ban my wife put down 15 rai of kor kor 6 planted as i hadn't planted any hom mali at that stage. Thing is most of the kor kor 6 will be held back for consumption and after half an hour of back and forth conversation between the wife and office reps i still don't know whether i can get the insurance price on the hom mali..I did however get the lady to nod when i drew a process flowsheet from the farm to the miller then baac bank with 15% moisture in bold letters. I really need to get to the millers and see there matrix for what other conditions apply. As you said KS the Thai's tend to balance weight against moisture and quality resulting in lower prices. I found this newspaper report which sums everything up better than my trip today. Worth a read. https://www.newsdirectory3.com/rice-prices-why-is-the-price-of-rice-this-year-so-low-that-it-is-compared-to-the-price-of-instant-noodles-bbc-news-thai/
