I wonder why. Cars have been getting heavier for decades. A petrol powered MK1 Golf GTI weighed 820kg. The 2023 petrol equivalent (MK8) weighs 1,570kg. Almost double. An early BMW 3 series base model was 1,140kg. It is now around 1,700kg. Back in the days we only really had Land Rovers or Range Rovers as SUVs. The original Range Rover was around 1,700kg, now it is 2,500kgs. A BMW X7 weighs around 2,700kg!! Honda Accord MK1 around 900kgs. Current model almost 1,500kg. etc etc. How many multi story car parks have collapsed due to cars getting heavier and bulkier? A BYD Seal is a good family car. It weighs a little more than a BMW 520d. Has anyone called for 520d's to be banned as they might cause car parks to collapse? The new BMW M5 will be 2,345 kg! Is anyone talking about that? My petrol powered XC40 weighs almost 1,700kg. The electric equivalent is 2,050kg for single motor and 2,160 for the twin. Hardly enough to cause a building to collapse, especially if they are letting M5s, SUVs etc in. If you carry four big passengers you can easily add 300kgs to your gross weight. Is anyone talking about that and asking for passengers to be banned? It's just another propaganda myth against EVs. Yes, they are heavier as I said, but cars generally are getting heavier and heavier and have been for 30+ years - where is the outcry to stop this? And no doubt as technology advances batteries will become lighter Much ado about nothing.

Maybe you should change your name to "thaibeachkindoflikersabit". Kata beach in Phuket is great, as is Nai Harn. I was in Samui a few weeks ago and Chaweng was stunning, clear water, powdery sand, clean and lovely. Loads of other great beaches on Samui too. Samet (again was there recently) has Sai Kaew which is super powdery, clean and with lovely water. Agree with you on Koh Chang. Also agree with this. Also Hua Hin is generally a turd hole, nothing of interest there (to me).

Forgot to mention Vinfast. I know they are investing a huge amount into Thailand and will have something of a marketing blitz, but their cars were very uninspiring. Not very pleasant to look at and felt a bit cheap inside - nowhere near to the quality of the Chinese brands. I think they’ll struggle against that competition unless they are going to be very very cheap. We’ll see.

I just got back from the Bangkok Motor Show. Highlights: The MG Cyberster looks fantastic in the flesh, and very nice on the inside too. @JBChiangRai you will be happy. The Ioniq 5 is also great. Xpeng G6 and G9 very interesting, the P7i was pretty wow. I hadn't heard of this before but there is a Neta GT and it looks great inside and out. Could be a real Seal challenger. GWM Tank is a beast and very cool. Volvo XC30 feels superb inside but unfortunately a bit small for my needs as I am tall and there's hardly any room behind if you have your seat right back, but otherwise a fab car. The Xeekr 007 and Xeekr X look interesting if a little quirky. The other Xeek'rs were a bit weird for my taste. The Lumin actually feels like a really solid little city car. The interior feels well made with very good quality switch work, everything felt very solid for a car of that price. BYD Sealion feels good too. In short the future is clearly Chinese and their products are very high quality. Wandering round the legacy automakers was like looking back in to the 90s, except for Volvo and Audi - especially the eTron which look gorgeous. Very expensive though at 6m and 8m for different trims levels although there is a 1.2m discount on offer during the show. Annoyingly hardly any cars had pricing information and I couldn't be bothered to ask at each manufacturer as I would have been there all day. Not sure if it's because this was the press day and the prices will be transparent for the public days, not sure. Finally, it looks like BYD will be launching four new models, including one hypercar type shape (they were all under covers). Oh, and Tesla are not even there. And this despite the fact that China has more HSR lines (45,000kms) then every single country in the world combined - and by some margin; China has more than two thirds of all the global HSR. In fact China is clearly one of the safest high speed railways in the world by accidents vs distance travelled. Try reading about it, you would be impressed. Or try riding on it - you'd be immensely impressed (although I am sure you wouldn't admit it).
