So, they each in turn, make toasts as an unspoken challenge to see who is the most clever... which is also the only point of conversation for all of them... and if there are 10 of them, 2 skip out on the bill entirely, 2 are too important to pay and you should be honored that they are there, 1 is a total alcoholic wino - he chugs his glass of wine, pours himself a new glass every 2 minutes but tops off everyone else's sips as he keeps ordering bottle after bottle, and the rest of you struggle to pay the bill and the waitress gets pissed as there is really nothing leftover for a tip... I don't think you missed much... how would I know... shhhhh...

I did my car camping in a Chevy Van... I was an East coast guy but ended up in Santa Monica - A friend was housesitting Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden's apartment, so I ended up in the parking lot, near the Pacific. There were others and they treated me like a newbie in status because I was a recent arrival and they had been there a long time. Then one of the guys was talking abt going overland through Europe, Middle East - - and on to Asia - but it was mostly a pipe dream... though it was the route I had done a couple of years before - - and when I told them I spent a year backpacking around the world - - then my status grew...

I also do not have problems buying land in my wife's name... no strings attached. Yes, I have to sign something at the land office saying I will not make a claim on the land - - and I have no problem with that either. I guess if you have problems with giving land as a gift to the family, then you shouldn't do it. And yes, I understand she can ask me to leave any time, which is fine too. But then again, maybe a wife might want to stay w/someone who is on her side and hopes she has a good secure enjoyable life.

The very very very simple secret is that you don't put more on the table than you are prepared to lose... interesting question - - I have recently heard people say 3-4 million baht... personally, I don't think that would do it, things medical are definitely getting more expensive... but w/money, everyone has their own comfort level. People do get by on less, I am sure.

just look at a map if you want alternatives, though for most, and the assimilation process usually begins w/having a Thai lady as your gateway into a new area. My wife has a wonderful family and group of friends in the village - adding to that, going into town every day and picking up my niece at school led me to another world of friends in our nearby city - - I enjoyed my years in the village and enjoy going back...
