Vicious attack at gas station: Met chief comes calling to pressure stalling local cops

Metropolitan police commander Sanit Mahathavorn has taken a direct interest in the case of an attack on two men at a Jaran Sanitwong Soi 80 gas station earlier in the week.

Assuring the public that the case will be properly handled his remarks follow claims by a lawyer acting for the victims that the local police chief wanted the matter to go away.

There has already been a bribery attempt to silence the father of one of the victims and others have suggested that the police have been approached.

Sanit and his entourage descended on Bang Plat police station ostensibly to "ensure justice" but also to roust along the local cops who were interviewed themselves as to what they have done so far.

Sanit's involvement led to seven of the eight suspects being interviewed yesterday. A warrant for the last man is expected soon.

CCTV footage earlier in the week showed pump attendant Guy Sukphanit, and a visitor to the gas station Thong Sutwan, both 18, take a sustained kicking to head and body by the gang of thugs. At least one shot was also fired.

It was reported at the time that it was over the attendant spilling some gas on a bike tank.

One of the victims was dragged out of a 7/11 where he had fled to hide leading to the further possibility of abduction charges to add to assault and weapons violations.

Sanit told the press that some of the victims have admitted involvement and others have protested their innocence saying they were just filling up with gas.

He ordered an immediate identity parade to be carried out.

In a move to quell disquiet over the case he said: "I want the relatives and victims to be happy with what we are doing. This case will proceed.

"It can't be sorted with words. A serious crime was clearly committed and this can't be simply withdrawn by one side or the other", reported Daily News.

Earlier Tnews quoted the lawyer acting for the victims who intimated on his Facebook page that the efforts of the Bang Plat chief of police were suspect.

Kertphon Kaewkert was not happy that the local cops were foot dragging in the case and that no warrants were immediately issue despite it being well known who the assailants were.

Kertphon said that the station chief had dismissed the shooting incident as "just making a threat".

"How can he say that a shooting incident is just a threat without a full investigation?", asked the lawyer online.

"No wonder the victims called me in to seek justice".

Congratulations to the met police chief. His action is urgently needed all over the country

Oh dear. When the chief steps in and says, “Don’t worry” I start to worry. The chief only usually steps in when a cover up is needed (Koh Tao, Red Bull) as he is untouchable and can do what he wants and silence who he wants. The early article on this says the scumbags have rich parents. Is that the rustle of brown envelopes I hear?

I recall when I first came to Thailand that farang were considered uncivilised because they were aggressive and confrontational! Oh how the table has turned.....

In a civilised society these thugs would be jailed, the police would be investigated and the parents would be arrested for attempted bribery.

Indeed, let's wait and see.

Someone's connected here. Sorry to state the obvious but the Thai public are sick of this corrupt system.

Does this mean something will be done? Does this mean we want it to look like something will be done? Does this mean I want a big brown envelope so nothing will be done? Call me cynical if you will.

what actually prompted the attack ? I just cannot fathom what could have caused such a frenzied reaction. I note from the video one of the first two thugs seemed content with slap, demeaning the guy squatting down and pointing at him. Then another guy enters from the bottom of the screen and delivers a vicious kick to the squatting attendants head and the more restrained one suddenly lets rip too and goes full bore. Its like some sort of group psychosis occurs and they are incapable of controlling themselves.
