Toddler shoots two children at Michigan home

(Reuters) - A toddler shot and wounded two 3-year-old children with a handgun at a Michigan home where a woman was babysitting several youngsters, police and local media said on Thursday.

The shooting on Wednesday in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn occurred after the toddler got access to a handgun, Dearborn police said in a statement.

One of the children was shot in the shoulder and was expected to make a full recovery. The other child was in serious but stable condition, the police statement said, without providing other details.

Police have interviewed the woman who was babysitting several children, the Dearborn Free Press reported. Specially trained officials interviewed some of the toddlers who witnessed the shooting.

Investigators will meet with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to discuss whether charges should be filed, police said in the statement.

A representative for Dearborn police did not immediately return calls seeking additional comment.

So US police & reporters are no better than Thai Police & reporters when it comes to stating the obvious!!!

If only the other two kids had guns, they could have defended themselves!  'Murica!  RIP and and I hope the parents of all kids have the strength to deal with this disaster!

It would be correct if the baby sitter shot the two kids and then planted the gun on the toddler. Strange things happen in Detroit.

US rednecks will still stand and say the 2nd Amendment protects the right of ALL Americans (yes, even toddlers) to wield guns.   .....even tho the 2nd Amendment was only referring to local militias with smoothbore muskets.    Right Wingers have twisted the 2nd Amendment to appear to provide rights which it doesn't provide.   The same mega-easily-duped people who voted for Trump, are the same mega-easily-duped people who believe the 2nd Amendment asserts something it doesn't state.

And "well-regulated" to boot.

Heck, I'll even throw in a sword, and a cannon (open-carry?).

I'm surprised a "toddler" even knows how to discharge a hand-gun, and since two children were wounded, I'm assuming Jr. got off at least two rounds?

And yet all the redneck huckybillies that see the 2nd amendment as being vital to their existence as it is part of the cherished constitution, and most of whom will be Trump voters, don't think the first amendment is worth crap at the moment, especially if it is exercised by a black. Why I am quite sure most of them think the only time a black should be on their knees is when they are begging for their life.

If you must keep a handgun in the home at least keep a 9 mm WITHOUT a round in the chamber. The chances of a child being able to cock and fire a 9 mm are extremely small. Revolvers are an insane weapon to leave around any building that has children in it. I just thank God the child in question had not been coached by their Mother or Father to be a better shot.

Now that's a good point at the end. I guess one round would be sufficient with a small child to exit one and enter the other. I guess we will be given the details soon enough when the lobbying arm of the NRA make sure everyone has the story straight.

The babysitter should be charged with criminal incompetence.

Surely the owner of the gun should be prosecuted as, apparently it was so easily available?

Agree entirely with the last para.

Allow me to enlighten you to the second amendment retarded States of America. I often wondered what is worse than hardcore porn and I have just discovered it. WARNING For those of you with a shred of humanity and civilisation within you this is difficult to watch.

Hmm maybe I am the villain for showing my daughter how to rear chickens and grow orange trees from seedlings and take happy snaps of those activities. Maybe I need to leave her with some snaps as a child when she is packing some automatic weapons.

Why? Do you don't know where the gun was or how the kid got the gun? And now you tell something like this?

Maybe the father put the gun under a pillow and the kid found it and played around. Babysitters can't see everything.

Maybe the father shouldn't have a hand gun in the house. Nor should anyone else. 35,000 people a year loose their lives from guns in that country yet the corrupt politicians and courts permit them.

She isn't a babysitter she runs a day care, Therefore she should know about anything and everything in the house that could be a danger to a child and remove that danger.  However I would also go after the gun owner, it's their gun they are responsible for it.

I was thinking that might be the case - "Woman", "several children", didn't sound like my 14 year old sister who used to look after a couple of neighbours' kids for pocket money.

You know, America being the gun crazy country it is, it's even possible the kid brought the gun with him from home; unlikely, but possible.

I don't know the laws in Michigan, but day care facilities are licensed by the state.   If you take care of a certain number of children, unrelated to you, then you are required to have a license.   To get the license, there is a safety inspection of the home/facility,  a medical check on the provider and any staff and in some states, training is provided.

Not so fast. Perhaps she was unaware of the gun in the house. I would sooner look to the parents and specifically how they had the weapon stored. I'm not dismissing a look at the babysitter, though.

Perhaps the toddler brought the gun. Does the child care facility have a metal detector at the door and a security guard to check all bags?

Nah, they don't need a metal detector, just a very big magnet and those little ones will stick right to it if they are packing heat.

Another reason that guns should be regulated much better in the USA and any country

in the world for that matter. Charge the gun owner for sure and ban them from owning any firearm

for at least 10 years.

Geezer

Yes, it's because we have something called the Second Amendment. Bad things happen in free countries. One can always choose to live in other, more heavily regulated countries like Singapore if that is more to their liking. The basic problem in the United States is lack of accountability- from top to bottom.

Maybe if the children that got shot would have had guns that they could have taken control of the situation? At least the other one could have shot the toddler before the toddler got him/her. Irresponsible of the parents to leave the kids unarmed.
