Fugitive ex-PM Yingluck Shinawatra seeks asylum in UK

Not a snowballs chance in hell !    They would never agree to extradite her to a Military Junta in any country.

If she gets asylum, whilst fleeing from justice in her homeland, could this be another route to get our wives into the UK?

There is the Surinder Singh rule to enter the UK, then there will be the Yingluck Shinawatra rule?

If she is, I hope it is made clear to her that she should restrain from any political activities while here...

Remember big brother Skype-ing those big rallies during the Bangkok riots from the safety of his mansion in Surrey?

I hope never again.

Extradition is complicated and while a treaty may exist it still depends on many other factors including the crime and the state of the government.  Others have already said that our courts tend not to look kindly on military junta's or any government that is un-elected and or the result of a coup.  Her "crime" is negligence which is seemingly political rather than criminal.  I suspect that in theory most politicians could be accused of negligence at some time in their careers!  I think it is more than possible that she could get asylum here.

Personally I would not be against my government giving her asylum and I also wonder if it is not the best solution for Thailand as well.  She still has a lot of popular support outside of Bangkok and putting her in jail will simply make her a kind of martyr to many people.  Once released she could still become a rallying point for unrest even if she personally would be barred from holding office.  The best thing that Thailand can do I feel is let the saga rest and the news story die a death.  Then as quickly as possible organise free elections AND accept the outcome of those elections no matter how popular the choice is among the elite.

Dear Mrs. May,

attached is the extradition notice, please don't take it seriously.

Thaksin did apply for political asylum in UK, do a simple search, its reported by UK news as well.

Even though Thaksin has his Thai passport reinstated during Yinglucks premiership, he doesn't travel with his Thai passport. He is using his non-thai diplomatic passport, that is why he can travel so freely.

Yes we do not know anything regarding to Yinglucks asylum request, right now its just coming from unauthenticated sources. Her son is irrelevant, there is nothing regarding to her sons stability in the future. Thaksins children and grandchildren are in Thailand living a good life with no political interference or threats even though they travel frequently to see Thaksin (you can see their pictures on their Instagram page which they don't set to private and allow the whole world to see).

I did a simple search - this is the result:

"he wishes to return to Thailand but claimed it was not currently safe for him and his family.[189][190] Thaksin wishes to seek political asylum in the United Kingdom,[191] claiming his political enemies were interfering with the judiciary, however there is no evidence to suggest he proceeded with this request and his asylum case was neither approved nor declined."

Nooo . . . next door won't want her. Knickers already outnumber shorts by 3 to 1 on the washing line.

Would it be rude of the UK to enquire as to the source of her wealth and proof of tax paid?

It certainly wouldn't be any of the UK government's business, whether it would be rude or not is beside the point.

Are there any other Football clubs for sale or on the market?

As a convicted felon, she would not be allowed to own a Football Club.

Obviously, you don't know what decent people in the world think about Thailand and its Military Junta, People get Asylum in the UK just for coming from a country with a Military Junta so persecuted ex-PM will sail through, might have a long legal process but in the end, she will win. Not many countries who have legal Military coups unless you rewrite a constitution of course but who on earth would keep doing that?

She stole billions and only got a five year sentence.  She can hardly plead persecution or potential death penalty.  Send her home.

Was she convicted for stealing billions?

It is a good thing that mr P only wants to reconcile red and yellow Thais (or so he says).

If he planned to reconcile red and yellow farangs, his chances would be zero.

Splitting hairs.  They can read the trial transcripts and see that she never attended one meeting and persecuted the girl who whistle blew while her ministers were arranging fake g2g deals.  Still only a 5 year sentence.  Send her home.  Your other comment was irrelevant unless you were talking about yourself.

QUOTE: Your other comment was irrelevant unless you were talking about yourself.

Yes I am a RED (with BLACK).

Only not in the Thai meaning of the word. I am not a follower of super rich thieving hiso.

But thanks for illustrating my point, at your own expense.

Grabbing headlines for days. Just wondering how is the progress in another corrupt rice scheme going with the NACC. Being 7 years since Ahbisit rice quarantee scheme being investigated by the NACC. Compare to Yingluck's lightning investigating speed, Ahbisit case seem never got of the table.

Well Mr Socialist, why were you posting in support of a super rich thieving hiso.  Please don't tell me it is because she is so beautiful and you love her.

I think the culture for women in the UK might be more favorable for her than Dubai. Just a guess.

England has an extradition agreement with Thailand, so if Thailand requests extradition she'll be returning home!

Oh No ! Extradition!! My God The world trembles.

Given their past history why would anyone think Thailand would attempt to extradite or for that matter file documents with Interpol for her arrest?! They'll extradite the tooth fairy before that happens.

Nice going, you 2 post-pros. I make it Oldhippy 3 : Deerhunter 2 and, with SkyBet pestering me for my wager, I have to say my money's on . . . oops, got cut-off . . . bugger-it

Bloody typical.

Say an extremist is an extremist, and they will get upset.

Would save a lot of trouble if they were not extremist to start with.

Or at least had a sense of humour.

And while all that's going on the BBC can simultaneously hold a World Debate programme entitled " the Merits of the Thai Justice System " ( based on our own experience  at the BBC):giggle:

Farangs should avoid to comment

Well since we are discussing asylum in the United Kingdom, perhaps you "should avoid to comment"?

Ten bob each way on each horse of whatever you were trying to wager about.  Please don't try to explain. AND, this is my final and rhetorical post on this thread.  Bored.
