OXO you may well be right but hands-on experience with this particular  TV HEALTH FORUM has taught me not to underrate the well-informed by experience, intellectual, ergo erudite members.
Simply the answer by one of the members= I had something similar done!

would suffice to look for a second opinion.

From my understanding it normally it can be reattached but tooth should be checked for decay and sealed well so best to have dentist do it - but many people have done it themselves as a temporary fix - but that is not recommended for long term (even when you know that sticky candy did the deed).

Of course, the crowns can be reused after cleaning

Not always as there may be decay that caused the crown to fall out and will have to be removed from tooth requiring a new crown be made I suspect.

Saw the dentist. There is deeper cavity. For now it was cleaned, crown put back.
But to do it long term, deeper drilling required. Which after filing changes the structure of the tooth. At that point the crown will cover the tooth only partially. Leaving the foot of the crown which overlaps the tooth open to food , bacteria. New crown advisable.
