Kalasin residents warned Chi River likely to burst banks

By The Nation

The Kalasin governor on Friday warned people living along the Chi River in three districts of the northeastern province to move their belongings upstairs as the river may soon burst its banks.

Governor Kraisorn Kongchalad said residents in Kongchai, Kamalawisai and Rongkham districts need to monitor closely the situation and warnings from the provincial administration.

As of Friday morning, the water level in the river had risen by four centimetres. The upstream Wang Yang reservoir was forced to release water through all of its six watergates at the rate of about 1,109 cubic metres water per second, the governor added.

The governor said the water was rising because floodwaters were flowing down from Khon Kaen and Mahasarakham.

He said he had instructed officials to reinforce flood levees at risky spots along the banks with sand bags and that officials were monitoring the river around the clock.

Was driving by the Chi on Thursday and saw that it had already happened. Easily 4 times its normal width.
