Some 800 monkeys take refuge as national park floods

A massive flood of a national park in Mahasarakham’s Kosumphisai district prompted some 800 long-tailed macaques to take refuge on a road beside the park.

Apichart Karaket, chief of the Kosumphee National Park, said the water level of the flooded park rose as the Chi River’s level rose.

Apichart said the rising floodwaters caused the 800 monkeys to flee from the park to live on a two-kilometre-long road beside the park and they were unable to find food on their own.

Some of the monkeys fled to live on the roofs or walls of houses.

Meanwhile, local villagers built a flood embankment with sandbags to prevent floodwaters from crossing the road separating the park from their rice fields.
