New financial requirements for non-O visa in Switzerland (visit Thai wife)

Featured Replies

The consular section of the Thai embassy in Switzerland and the three consulates now require evidence of the financial status that was not necessary when I last applied for a non-O visa to visit my wife of Thai nationality in 2015. These financial requirements apply the same regardless the number of entries requested for the visa, single or multiple. Of the four, only the consular section of the Thai embassy has the requirements in English on the website. The three consulates have financial requirements that differ from those of the consular section of the embassy.

I asked the consul in Basel whether his requirements were perhaps due to an error or a misunderstanding, as they seemed to be a mixture of the financial requirements for the one-year extensions for retirement and for living with the Thai wife, and he replied that they were ordered by the Thai embassy in Switzerland.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Vancouver Consulate:

6. For the purpose of visiting family in Thailand or visiting as a spouse of a Thai national:

  • The applicant must present a valid and effective marriage certificate and a copy of the spouse’s Thai Passport or Thai National I.D. card.Fiancés are not included in this category.
  • To visit as the relative of a Thai national, the applicant must show documents proving such a relationship.
  • For multiple entry: required document to proof monthly income minimum 40,000 Baht (for last two month) or Bank balance 400,000 Baht

I got my visa two weeks ago and it was 200,000!!

I wasted a day this summer going to the Zurich consulate for an METV on the basis of the information on their website. They said I had to go to the embassy instead, and that in a not very friendly way. In Bern, I ended up getting my Visa, but since their information on the web was incomplete I needed to go back one more time. As a retiree I obviously couldn't provide a letter from my employer, but they wanted an updated pension statement, in addition to a bank statement of 6 months. Lesson learned, don't believe what it says on the internet, just go and ask.
