Flood-damaged buildings leave 1,200 students without classrooms

By The Nation

About 1,200 students at Phutthaisong School in Buri Ram’s Phutthaisong district were being forced to attend school in 20 tents after three two-storey school buildings were severely damaged due to prolonged flooding, district chief Nimit Patamacharoen said on Thursday.

Nimit earlier accompanied engineers to inspect the site, with officials concluding that the three buildings were unsafe.

The buildings, which were already old, had been in deep floodwaters for the past two weeks and were considered to be damaged beyond repair.

Engineers also warned students and teachers not to use the buildings because they could collapse.

The school has a total of 2,800 students, but 50 classrooms in other buildings were deemed safe. That left only 1,200 without adequate classrooms, who were as a result moved to rented tents, some areas in a conference hall and an indoor parking lot.

School director Prachai Pornsa-ngakul said he would ask for 12 temporary classroom buildings to be used until a new construction budget is approved.

The school would be operating under difficult conditions until the approval of construction for two new buildings, the existing structures were demolished and the construction is complete, Nimit said.
