Aung San Suu Kyi makes a surprise visit to troubled Maungdaw township

 

 

Myanmar’s State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi made an unannounced one-day visit to Maungdaw township in the troubled northern Rakhine state on Thursday (Nov 2), The Irrawaddy Online reported.

 

The state counselor visited both Arakanese and Rohingya communities in four areas in Maungdaw township – the scene of militant attacks on police outposts on Aug 25 which provoked retaliation by the Myanmar armed forces, culminating in the exodus of more than 600,000 Rohingyas to Bangladesh since then.

 

At least 30,000 Arakanese and Hindus have been internally displaced by the violence.

Too little too late

Perhaps if these folks were shown some respect and human dignity, the right of all human beings, and not been the target of numerous past very violent attacks, some just focused on their nationality with no further analysis of the sad past then they would not be inclined to resort to violence to defend themselves.

 

IMHO both the last (long term) and the current government are in many ways responsible for the current very tragic state of events.

 

The lady needs to step up and show some balance and respect for all, regardless of the contentious matter of whether they are citizens or not.

 

How come so many folks, world wide, have forgotten the word  compassion! The photos in the media are very  disturbing and include innocent young children, just disgraceful.

 

And where is the UN?

and contemplate what happened in Maungdaw in 2012:

There are independent witnesses to what was an attack  directly after Friday prayers. It also happened directly after China had signed a contract to export oil and gas to China, through the Rakhine. Saudi, Pakistan and the USA doesn't like that. What is happening to these 'Rohingyas' (Bengali Muslims illegally present, most of them) is indeed terrible I agree, I suppose you could say they have been manipulated by external powers.

Other Muslim groups in Burma have been left in peace.
