Under fire Hollywood action star Steven Seagal was feted by Thailand on frequent visits

The Hollywood action star Steven Seagal - at the center of the latest accusations about sexual misconduct - is an old friend of Thailand and has been feted by the current government.

Seagal, 65, has been accused by Arrested Development actress Portia de Rossi of sexual harassment. The partner of US superstar Ellen DeGeneres claimed that Seagal "unzipped his trousers" telling her that it was "important to have off-screen chemistry".

The allegations were reported by the BBC.

Seagal has had "chemistry" in Thai relations stretching back 30 years after multiple visits to the kingdom. The Nation reported that he visited in April 2016 and spoke of setting up a film production company in Thailand to "demonstrate the country's aesthetics to the world".

Then vice-president of the National Reform Steering Assembly Alongkorn Polaboot praised him at the time for "promoting Thai culture and respecting Buddhism".

He is also believed to have met with Tourism and Sports minister Kobkarn Wattanavarangul.

Seagal has also bonded with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

A Thai PBS news story quoting Seagal in October 2016 said that he felt a "special bondage (sic) with Thailand".

Seagal was lauded in last October when he met Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha and paid his heartfelt condolences to the Thai people after the loss of His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Hollywood is facing a string of scandals after director Harvey Weinstein was accused of rape, something he denies.

It is not known yet whether the authorities in Thailand will be attempting to distance themselves from Steven Seagal as the latest allegations rock Hollywood.

what real pees me off is these come out of the woodwork years later. springs to mind cliff richard, i was held down by a policewoman years ago and sexually assaulted, . so <deleted> , ok it never happened,, just to stress the point all these cases would have been given more credence if reported at the time, not in some cases 30 years after,

Why is that news? Thailand "fetes" pretty much everybody who has some cloud of glamour or fame enveloping them, no matter how disassociated these people actually are from the country. The sole premise seems to be hopes that the unwarranted adoration will somehow rub off on the country and its almost unhealthy obsession with face and recognition.

Vanessa-Mae - born to a Thai mother and grown up in Singapore and London, she's actually never lived for any period of time in Thailand, yet was slapped with a complimentary "Elite" card

Tiger Woods - the only criteria that once earned him Thailand's "feting" is that his mom is Thai; although he was born in the U.S. and has on various occasions (and rightfully so) described himself as American - and American only

That bloke with allegedly the highest IQ in the world - he was "feted" - nay, courted - by the Thai government although there was not one single scientific assessment of his actual IQ and it was solely based on his own claim

And the list could go on. Who Thailand doesn't "fete", though, are those tens of thousands of foreigners who have wed Thai wives, live here legally and often enough support entire extended families. Although is they who would deserve that "feting" most, they have never received any commendations and are in fact merely tolerated (but not welcome) as attested by the ever more stringent visa requirements.

Amazing how the baiting starts once an ideal punching bag is stigmatised.

How was Thailand to know at that time what allegations would arise ?

And does this mean that my Bangkok tailor will now remove a well displayed dusty old photo of Seagal in his shop ?

As for feting people it is cultural...so many fine gentlemen get feted when they enter a Pattaya soi bar !! :partytime2:

A teenager in the bus this morning was heard saying  ....."but who is this Steven Seagal?" :clap2:...

Of course you're right  Thailand wouldn't have known and also wouldn't know that there would be a big wave of reporting incidents either.

In Thailand, sexual conduct is welcome.

Seagal has a history of involvement in sexual harassment, etc., going back at least to the early nineties. He has reportedly resolved these actions by the time honoured tactic of throwing money at them.
Hey, I enjoy some of his movies when I am in the mood for some less intellectually challenging entertainment. I like his animal rights activism. You have to respect that he achieved a seventh dan black belt, and had a dojo teaching martial arts in Japan.
At the end of the day, though, he has been accused of sexual misconduct numerous times, and that is a specifically prohibited activity in Buddhism.

Many more big names will come out of the woodwork. Politicians too. Why now and why some dating back decades. Simple now it is possible to admit what happened to you without the power of the media belittling the accuser. In the past if you were rich and powerful or in a position of power you controlled the media.

That is why people feel empowered to report things now.

I never liked segal. He is a shitty actor.  I have fallen asleep through a couple of his crappy self centered movies. I chose to boycott any of his movies back when he made a big deal about his being a volunteer cop in some hillbilly red state, his love affair with putin sealed it.

I disagree with Clint Eastwoods political views, but still enjoy some of his movies. I wonder if being able to separate an actor from characters they portray has anything to do with it?

De Generes comes close to De Generate.

Many people dislike Seagal. It's like people have nothing better to do same like Trump bashers.

Such a pity that many adherents/practitioners/followers don't understand/recognise that! :post-4641-1156693976:  Mankind will always interpret their religion or belief system to suit their own ends.

That's such a profound statement. You must be like really smart!

Juts out of curiosity, what does Ellen Degeneres or her girlfriend have to do with this topic?

Ellen is shacked up with the only woman to have accused Segal of misconduct, so relevant in a minor way.

I did notknow that visa based on marriage extensions are more stringent. retirement visas are now much more easy and less hassle.

Even the female Thai news reporters have a few stories to tell from Seagal's trips to Thailand.

I would not like to have him on top of me either. And I'm a 160 KG. Dutch bull.

I fail to see how infantile (and very revealing) word play on Degeneres' name is relevant even in a minor way.
