I've just bought a fishbowl for outside with water plants and those small fish. The leaves have lots of holes through them, and many are dying. Would this be because of too much fertilizer or the water snails?

Yep. Snails. Is there a treatment? one that kills snails and doesn't harm the fish?

Just through them in the toilet bowl and flush them ;). I feed a teaspoon of fish food every three days, is that too much? what happens if you don't feed the fish for a week, will they die or live of algae?

As long as they have enough water to drink they should be ok.

I don't know the snail life cycle in the bowls/ponds. Eggs on the plants you buy being the start??.

Would removing all the plants for a while help or are the eggs in the mud at the bottom??

I think there were snails when I bought the plants, but not a problem as I can just pull them off when there are too many. I also cut off some dying lillies and the whole bowl looks much better now. i am still not sure about how much fish food to give and when? (about 20 fish in 20 gallons). Seems a trivial post i have made, but at least a change from the other stories you read. Cheers.

If they are what I call 'guppies' about an inch/inch and half brightly coloured then very little food is needed.

I would cut feeding to half of what you use now, they will eat algae and keep the bowl a bit cleaner.

If they are guppies then very soon you will have a lot more than 20. ??

Nice fish. Yes I have them and some other red fish. After 3 weeks there are now another 20 babies. What happens when you have dozens and dozens of them?

I ended up with a sign on the gate, that the bowl was next to, saying 'Want fish help yourself.'

Worked ok, every day checked and when numbers got low I closed the gate and took the sign down.

Guppies breed, well, like guppies! However, your bowl will sort of self regulate as fish are cannibalistic, so, more fry equals more food therefore you can cut down what you are already feeding them. The fish will also live off the mosquito larvae which will inevitably find their way into the bowl.

The red fish you have are most probably platies or sword tails, both of which are live bearers, the same as the guppies and will reproduce quite quickly.

Hope this helps.

The plants are growing extremely fast, the snails and the fish are multiplying. I'll be going  away for a few days, and I guess when I return there will be some added extras ;). Cheers.

As others posted the fish numbers will balance themselves in a short time.

If you have the time and interest to do get another bowl and with a small net pick out a few of the guppies with the biggest fins and brightest colours and put a few of them in the new bowl.

You need a few to start so you get male/female, how do you sex guppies ?????. If the adults don't eat all the young you can get some really good shapes and colours.

How to sex guppies? The males are smaller with the long flowing fins, the females are larger with more rounded bellies and are far less colourful (see the attached pic), they are usually pregnant as well!. Oh, when they have reproduced once, they may not need to mate again in order to spawn again! Ain't nature wonderful!?

By the way, you can get anti snail pellets that don't harm the fish......apparently! Not tried them myself but if you were to put half your fish population into another bowl and give it a go in the bowl with the plants...and snails.

Good Luck.
