Same-sex marriage may be law in Australia by early December

I support "gay marriage", not because I care about it ( I couldn't give a fig if 2 people want to have a piece of paper to live together- which is completely irrelevant when anyone can live together, as they can in Australia, or most civilised western countries ), but if it gets passed, maybe I won't have to keep hearing about it all the time.

I have to say that I don't understand why anyone would still want to have a piece of paper just to say they can live together, when marriage is such a farce anyway. Any institution with a minimum 50% failure rate has to be suspect.

IMO it's only relevance is if people want children, but I'm old fashioned on that subject. I'm glad that I wasn't a bastard.

Wel it is just that piece of paper they are after.Of course they could and did live together as couples but being able to marry legally gives them also all of the legel entitlement that comes with it.For a straight person a matter of fact but a huge step forward for gay people.Just think about adoption for a start.

Can't single people adopt in Australia?

Married people get less pension that singles, so better off not being married and just living together. I can't think of any legal advantages to being married, and lots of reasons not to be.

Well done, Australia.

Isn't it amazing and also sad of course that many posters here who are upset about this development share a similarity with Islamists (whom they hate) who also hate LGBT rights ?!

Ahhhh.....these right-wingers, Islamists or otherwise :(

Being married doesn't even make people stay together- it just makes it more expensive to split up.

There are a number of advantages to being married.   If you aren't married, the biological family has all rights and the significant other has none.   These include decisions about medical care and treatment, including life support.   It means access to bank accounts, the home, insurance and whole host of other economic manners, should one of you become injured or incapacitated.

Even the right to visit someone in the hospital can be stopped by a not-so-approving family.

These are just the ones that are a part of the business side of marriage.

Senator Vanstone said it several years ago, and David Cameron - when UK PM - said it also a few months later: "ALL conservatives should be in favour of gay marriage. Marriage strengthens society. Two people can support themselves and live independently & without government assistance in a way that 1 person cannot."

Rather a nonsensical statement as Oz government fully recognises de facto relations for government benefits, legal matters etc etc

Yes, and including (in my case) for those Oz jurisdictions (practically all of them except the federal level) that have civil partnerships for homosexual relationships.

But that doesn't make nonsensical Amanda's & Cameron's statements of how intelligent conservatives should view marriage: The reality of marriage as basic to the structure of civil society remains true. If conservatives are to be more than just a bunch of silly old farts & hypocrites, then they should want MORE people to do it, not fewer. A conservative should work to build a society that is MORE inclusive, not less.

Agree, though depends on how their constituents view the matter. I personally view the referendum an act of political cowardice by the Conservatives.

In NZ after whatever is the current number of years ( 2 or 3- I could look it up, but you get the idea ), a LEGAL de facto relationship is imposed on the couple, so it's as hard to split up as it would be if actually married. To wish to avoid being taken to court to split assets etc would require one to leave the relationship before the cut off point.

So you apparently don't like democracy, and would rather have socially contentious solutions IMPOSED on society by a small and unrepresentative group of people?

Hmmmmm.

I prefer elected representatives to do their job, not for the taxpayer to be forced to pay millions of dollars as they had no spine.  As predicted the referendum brought out some of the worst characteristics of Oz society, including the bastards from the far right so admired by some on this forum.

Now go away...

I was of course speaking of 'conservatives' not 'Conservatives' (noting that, of course, in Oz the more reactionary 'mainstream' politicians have until recently laughably called themselves Liberal but they are now slowly splitting the Liberal party & establishing a 'new' Conservative party to take Oz back to those wunnerful times before we became multicultural socialist conservationist poofters).

And there's something else that any intelligent conservative worthy of the name should be: a conservationist, conserving carefully those good things we take for granted, both in our society and its institutions and in our environment. A true conservative is an ecological conservationist in a broad sense - full of care for the good things of life, which need sustaining for the long term. But not a reactionary, dreaming of the past, and not hostile to change - just careful with it.

Tennis, anyone?

Interesting reply to anti-gay crusader Margaret Court who said:

“They want marriage because they want to destroy it. There will be no Mother’s Day, there will be no Father’s Day, there will be no Easter, there will be no Christmas.”

Quote

So Margaret Court now says there will be no more Christmas or Easter, nor Mother’s and Father’s Day in Australia, all because of Same Sex Marriage. Au contraire Margaret- us gays love parties, especially the boys:), and we just might have 2 Mother’s days and 2 Father’s days:)
