A 78-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair was at the roadside in Chumphon Tuesday morning to donate money to Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai on his cross-country charity run.

The rock star, who Laddarat Yungsawat called her “hero”, noticed her at the kerbside in Muang Chumphon soon after he set out on Day 21 of his run at 4.30am.

He dropped to his knees before Laddarat and offered a respectful wai in greeting.

She gave him her blessing and wished him a safe run all the way to Mae Sai in the North and success in his bid to raise Bt700 million for 11 hospitals.

Toon moved on with a big smile on his face.

Laddarat told reporters she’d asked her brother to wheel her out specially so she could personally give Toon a donation.

She said she had no idea who he was until he began the 2,000-kilometre run, which has become a national phenomenon.
