uncalibrated ?

Featured Replies

Every time go to hospital, my BP measures ie 145/90.  Somewhat concerned, I bought a Withings BP meter, and it generally was around 125/85.

went to hospital for a back issue, and again.... about 150/90....

so.... went and bought a OMRON meter like they were using, and generally about 125/85 for the last few days, different times of the day...

I recon I am setting it up better than hospitals, so who is right / wrong.....

The hospital electronic BP meters are usually wildly inaccurate. I always insist on doctor administered mercury reading, which is up to 20 points lower than the electronic reading.

Ask your electronic BP meter supplier to have it calibrated.

Thailand, the Hub of calibration.

Take readings from 10 different measuring devices:
- BP measuring devices
- Thermometers
- Tire pressure measuring devices
- Wind velocity measuring devices
- Weight scales (including scales of local merchants)
- Fever measuring devices
You will get 10 different results.

That's why I stay close to some British "old timers", still practising the fine art of reading Tea-Leaves.
Cheers.

Sounds more likely to be white coat syndrome than a faulty machine, I would guess......I'm exactly the same way.

Proper procedure also mandates that the patient be allowed to sit quietly for at least 5 minutes prior to measurement to be considered accurate,  which is always never the case. I am in same boat,  great readings at home with new Omron and always high in office or hospital setting.

Some BP meters can be calibrated. The cheap ones can't.

I can't believe they're using an Omron. Old fashioned stethoscope and cuff is much more reliable.

And that is not what is used today for general blood pressure readings - in fact it is often held under lock and key for doctors use only due to mercury from recent reports.  In government hospitals you DIY with self inflating units.

In this case it is most likely white coat syndrome, and five minutes rest may not do much for that, and he should take a home unit with him next time to confirm - expect staff would be more than happy to compare with him free of charge if he wants to visit without an appointment.

Will bring mine next time - good news is that it’s not as bad as I thought - I have now 2 units from different brands , and the OMRON one is brand new , and they both correlate

I'm reporting on what is used here in the US right now. By the way, they always make me wait 15 minutes before looking under the hood.

The 15 minute wait is while they do a credit check to see if you can pay the bill...ha ha

Wipe egg off face - they measured mine at the clinic and again , no walking ( 20 m from car to seat ) - 10 mins later measured 147

Pulled out my own unit - ah ha !!! - measured the same

Lol - kinda

Guess options left are to loose weight and get fit or a life of tablets

Low carb diet and 30 mins a day brisk walking did it for me. Steer clear of prescription drugs. The side-effects just aren't worth it, not to mention the effect on the liver.
