Pigeons.

Featured Replies

Anyone know where I can get a plastic or concrete bird of prey, and small lookalike rubber snakes?

I want to try everything before I start to poison them which will be a last resort.

When we had a pigeon problem, the fake birds, snakes and the likes were available overseas but plastic spikes to stop them settling on ledges were available at HomePro. I got a buddy to bring some sticky Bird-Be-Gone gel from the US but subsequently found a local variant (I'll see if I have the link). Otherwise, I used to fire my airsoft at them. Eventually, we stopped leaving dog dishes out front of the house (dry food) and they buggered off. They are vermin and typically scrounging for free food so find what's attracting them, get rid of it and they may go away and annoy someone else.

The plastic snakes we got at those anything-for-20-baht shops. They cost a wee bit more, though, depending on size. Possible to get them wholesale in Bangkok's Chinese Market toy area, but doubt you'll need that many. We tossed in a few dinosaurs for fun. Worked best when loosely tied on hangers, to allow some movement. Oh, and they sometimes melt a bit...

Another effective favorite was tying balloons on balcony rails. Pigeons were spooked by movement and occasional blasts. Thought it would annoy neighbors, but they were quite amused.

The sticky stuff works wonders, but not in areas open to rain (washes off). Also need to remember it's there, a pain to get it off hands and clothes.

The plastic/metal pin rails are good too, just ugly. Cats are better, and look much nicer.

Make sure no potential easy nesting places under/in roof.

Are they coming just to eat or are they also nesting on your property?

Different solutions for this.

To the OP - Why not consider the ultrasonic electronic bird repellants ?

I got one in my car that repeals weasels (not for pigeons though) and it works fine.

I've tried a couple of these, they seem oblivious. Or as the Mrs. suspects, it does bug them, but they pretend otherwise just to spite.

Edit - no rats, though (knock on wood), and no cockroaches.

That's just it, the nesting places are under the canopy covering my motorbike, and I have to clean it up every day.

I know about them, but where do I get them?

If they are sleeping under your roof you can chase them off with a laserlight pen.

They hate it and use it a few times they won't be back (for awhile)

Use it after they settled down for the night.

Flying rats is what I call them. Living in a rice farming community, we have our fair share of these birds. Farmers will shoot off loud fireworks from time to time but nothing really scares them off for any length of time. My slingshot works best and am looking for a BB rifle. The only redeeming factor these non-native birds have, is they are a great way to try and improve my photography skills. As you can see from the photo, I still need to learn to clean my lens first...

Rubber snakes only seem to work if the rubber snake has it's head raised like a Cobra etc.

Neighbour in BKK has a hawk shaped bird suspended on a system that moves the wings in the wind and that worked.

Like an adult sized babies mobile.

All the entrances in the house were filled in about two months ago, so as far as I know the only nesting place is on my motorbike under the cover at the front.

We hardly get any wind here in central Thailand, so it looks like I am just going to have to poison them, I don't need to worry about the dogs as the motorbike is in an enclosed place against the house. I read in an old TV forum that I should squirt WD oil where the pigeons land, I tried that but it does not work.

Can you buy these things in Thailand?

Try a strip of wood with fishing line streamers hanging in close loops all around the top edge. Small nails tapped in every 1" or so with the line hanging down 18" or so.

With the poison there's still a chance they could die outside and the dogs could get to the bodies.

Not sure if I'm picturing the right image, but the balloon thing worked nicely for the nesting areas. They will still come around, but not linger. One of these would pop before the nest was finished and they'd shove off somewhere else. Need to scrap away any half built nests, though, as they get repopulated.

We don't use poison, as they may die anywhere and cats/dogs aren't always that smart about it. Plus a rotting pigeon corpse would both stink and invite rats/monitor lizards. The WD thing works spraying on nests, but not full-proof, and possibly a fire hazard if used liberally.

I think HomePro, Global House etc. usually carry some. Quality and prices differ. More heavy duty ones, perhaps need to order from specialized dealers (there were a couple of old topic with addresses, I think). Far as I can tell, the standard variety doesn't seem to bother them much.

HardwareHouse in Ban Amper have something called Sunflower and Doogy, it says it on the bottle that it is a natural concoction of 20 different herbs that repels pigeons. I have a bottle but not tried it yet, we get them sitting on the decorative moldings high up on the wall so I need to climb up and spray some on the moldings. Will report back

It's right at the very back of the shop if anyone wants to buy and try some.

Good point, I will keep that in mind.

That will be great, I will go there when I come down to Pattaya in Jan. Thanks.

As promised have now tested Sunflower and Doogy and can report as follows:

As already described we have ornamental concrete moldings around all the windows the pigeons like to sit on them at night, the downlights under the sofits keep them away from lit areas but the S&D keeps the places clear where the lights don't reach.

We also seem to have a cavity under the tiles where they were getting inside the roof, after spraying on that area they have stopped getting in the roof and congregating in that area.

We also have an ornamental Chinese style bridge over our stream, they like to sit on the handrails in the daytime, one application of Sunflower stopped them.

Not sure how durable it is in the rain but have bought another bottle and re applied it.

Overall it works well

I had a massive problem with pigeons in the house I bought here in Greece, because the old lady opposite (single floor house, flat roof) used to put bread out on the roof every day. My balcony used to get covered (I mean really covered - there were hundreds of them) in pigeon guano on a daily basis because they would roost on the edge of my roof so they could keep an eye on the flat roof opposite. I bought some of those clear plastic spikes and stuck a couple of rows along the edge of the roof overlooking the street, and a row along the ridge tiles. Problem solved. They didn't like sitting half way up the roof, so moved to the house next door. The clear plastic spikes aren't too obvious, either.

They definitely will die outside, that is the only thing that is stopping me from poisoning them, surely there must be another way to poison them and keeping the dogs and cat safe.

There is shit all over the outside steps, and all around the outside of the house, I will do anything to kill them.
