Recently just done this, some info below fir those it may help.

 

Drove to Mukdahan and stayed at Ploy Palace, ok hotel but bit dated, about 1000 baht.

 

Left hotel next morning and parked at Thai side of friendship bridge, 250 baht for overnight parking, shaded with security.

 

Passed through Thai immigration, very quick, this was about 0800, then bought bus ticket and crossed the bridge.

 

Arrived Laos side, handed over visa on arrival form at window and paid 1500 baht, 5 minutes then passed through immigration.

 

Got tuk tuk to Thai consulate for 200 baht, went to the shop across the street and confirmed all paperwork in order - 100 baht. The only additional item he photo copied was the Laos entry visa. Paperwork I had was

 

- original marriage cert

- signed copy of above

- tabian Baan copy, signed by wife

- wife ID card, signed by wife

- my passport data page, signed by me

 

Entered the consulate, handed over docs and 5000 baht ( for 1 year ME non O ), got my receipt and left. Time in consulate 5 mins.

 

Went to hotel Avalon Res, about 500 baht.

 

Next morning returned to consulate collected passport, back to bridge to cross back to Thailand.

 

Very simple process, painless.

 

Found Savanaket extremely boring, my 30 hours there seemed like a week.... won 5000 baht at the casino though so that was a bonus.

Wow. Tuk tuk to the consulate from the bridge, 200b? Normal rate is 50b. But glad all went well.

Why didn't you get back on the bus after Laos immigration? No extra charge.

Bus station is only 150m from the Thai consulate, 5 min walk or less.

Also why pay 1,500bht when it's only $35 easily obtainable at any foreign money changer.

Paperwork 100bht? for what, they give you the free form when you get in the consulate (or you can download it).

I dunno, some people just seem to chuck money away.

Yeah, I Only paid 100 Baht in a Minibus for the both of us....

I had my own car, don’t get on buses - no thanks.

I paid 1500 baht as I had no dollars and did not have time to get US.

100 baht = $3 whoopty doo!! Would they have photo copied something or me in the embassy?

Apparently you did to cross the bridge, it's no extra to get back on, the 50bht covers you from Mukdahan to Suvannakhet.

I've been to Savannakhet a few times. I have to say that the worst part is the bus journey across the bridge.

 

If there was an option to take a tuk tuk all the way from the Thai side to the Lao  side and on to the consulate, stopping when required to get a visa, and the cost was 4 times that of the bus I would take it. Sometimes the extra expence for the sake of an easier time is well worth it.

After crossing the bridge, and being processed through Lao immigration, you can get back on the same bus (or the next one), and continue to the bus-station in town, which is fairly close to the Thai Embassy.

 

The tuk-tuks will try to waive you away from the bus, and then rip you off on the cost of the trip into town.

I always ask when I get there. Always get a No. The only private transport I have ever seen is the minibus from Savan Vagas.

I am surprised you had a problem finding the taxis willing to take you. Few use them because of the price, but they certainly exist. Examples of those encountering them:

I met someone who paid 2,000 baht at 10:00 am one day to ensure arriving early enough at the consulate.

 

At one point, I spent some time trying to figure out the minimum price you might be able to negotiate, and had the impression that 1,200 baht was the rock bottom minimum, only possible when there was little prospect of the driver getting other business. Most travelers will choose the 50 baht bus instead.
