Aviation award :THAI voted best trans-Pacific airline in magazine survey

Thai Airways International has been voted the best trans-Pacific carrier by Global Traveler magazine.

The magazine quizzed more than 13,600 frequent fliers - those taking more than 39 business trips a year.

The survey was conducted over eight months to determine the best in a range of travel categories. The survey is published in the magazine's January issue.

British Airways won best airline, American Airlines had the best domestic first-class service, and Qatar Airways was number one in the Middle East.

Other winners were Asiana Airlines for onboard service and flight attendants, LAN was top in Central and South America, American Express provided the premium credit-card rewards programme while Korean Air is king in cargo. Continental Airlines Presidents Clubs are the best airport lounges, InterContinental priority club rewards ranked highest for hotel rewards, and Travelpro was voted the best luggage.

"Our readers are the opinion-leaders of business and luxury travel," said Global Traveler publisher and chief executive officer Francis Gallagher.

"Since we have access to such an important group of individuals we created our annual survey to determine the preferences of the most experienced travellers around."

Can't argue with that one, it's well deserved :o

I just wish they'd upgrade their in-flight entertainment system, but in terms of service and F & B, they're indeed excellent!

THAI may cut nonstop flights to US

Thai Airways International is considering replacing its direct flights to the United States with one-stop services in the wake of losses and fierce competition. The flag carrier's non-stop Bangkok-New York service is likely to be replaced with flights with stopovers in major Chinese cities such as Beijing or Shanghai, while Bangkok-Los Angeles flights would stop in South Korea.

I almost gotta believe that it is too long of a flight, at about 16.5 hours per leg and that is hurting demand more than cost. I just priced a flight out on that itinerary and it came out to about $1400USD. That price is competitive or beats comparable prices on airlines with connecting flights.

It will be too bad if they decide to take the non-stop away. I was thinking about using the BKK-JFK flight in a little while, and I would always rather do a non-stop even if it is a long one.

I know from a fuel economy standpoint, Thai Airways really likes the BKK-JFK flight because it flies in the same direction both ways, making use of prevailing winds twice instead of once.

I've flown the LAX<->BKK non-stop. The westbound direction is scheduled as 17 hours. It really didn't seem anywhere near that long. Perhaps that's due to the creature comfort level of their Airbus. Perhaps it's because I was sitting "toward the front". Perhaps both. :D

Years ago, a flight about half as long on a 747 left me much more wiped me out. :o
