PHUKET: A revived effort is underway to have Phang Nga Bay and parts of the Andaman Sea and its coastlines surrounding Phuket, and possibly as far south as the Malaysian border, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Dr Chamniern Vorratnchaianan, a senior advisor for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Southeast Asia regional office in Bangkok, told the The Phuket News on Wednesday (Dec 6) that he was in the early stages of gathering information and support for a renewed proposal.

If it's declared a World Heritage Area, the Government then needs to manage it so it doesn't become a WHA on the Endangered List as has almost happened with Dong Phayayen - Khao Yai Forest Complex.  That means illegal activities of all sorts, especially those damaging to the natural values of the WHA need to be cleaned up.  I wonder how the Authorities will coordinate among themselves to stop illegal fishing, damage to coral reefs, pollution from dive boats, trampling of corals from over-tourism, the list of challenges goes on and on.  They will need a good management plan and someone in charge of implementing it.  Sounds like a big ask....

Sadly it is a big task for just about every country.  Laos has lots of eco parks.  Wonder how they do.

If this helps in any way to preserve nature, please do sop.

Might be helpful if you make more effort to keep protected marine species out of your seafood restaurants.

Lao has many National Parks most of them have little wildlife left in them because the Dept of Forest Resources Management cannot manage poaching

I think it is best to do it ALL domestically and keep UNESCO out of it.

The UN likes to encroach on the sovereignty of all countries.
