How to prove a Thai marriage for UK pension?

I have the paper and the flowery certificate

I assume I'll need an authorized translation ?

Is it from Ministry of Foreign Affairs or British Consul in C Mai or agent?

I would hope to avoid long journey to Bangkok Embassy if at all possible

Any advice welcome.

Can process be done by post/email and any idea of cost?

UK pension people will accept your Thai marriage cert, just send it, they will return it.

I did and it was ok,no problems, no translation needed.

Just so you know there is no Ault Dependancy Increase for married people now, that finished in 2010 so you will just get the basic pension based on your contributions and of course if you live here it will be frozen ( applicants who were already in receipt of ADI in 2010 will have it paid until 2020)

There is no adult dependancy, but they still require your marriage certificate.

They insisted i send mine before sorting my pension.

I don't think you would need the translation verified by the MFA. A translation done by a translation service should be accepted.

There is an a office for the translation certification in Chiang Mai if needed.

Having already lost 1 of our 2 certificates I didn't want to post it .

Is that the only way to prove it, Or could I show it to a consulate or the embassy here?

Thanks, any advice on best way to access it , I thought paid into my UK account and then transfer here as needed, using an ATM card seems expensive method or open an account with Bangkok Bank in London, but most UK based banks will no longer open accounts without utility bills which I have for here but not there.

I get my pension paid into my Krung Thai account, good exchange rate, no charges at all, easy no problems what so ever.

You do not need a UK bank account.

Send your marriage cert EMS easy, i did.

Yes , I understand they are asking for your marriage certificate, no idea why, when I claimed my state pension they wanted my divorce certificate from ten years before? No idea why, then they lost it but paid for replacement!

When I did mine a couple of years ago I put a photocopy of my Thai marriage certificate in with the application form and added a covering letter which said something like,

"Please find enclosed

....completed form

.....other stuff

.... and a photocopy of my Thai marriage certificate.  If you require a certified copy of it please let me know.  I will happily provide one.  I have not supplied a certified copy at this stage because I understand that my legal Thai marriage to a Thai citizen has no effect on my Senior Citizen pension entitlement.  If my understanding is incorrect please let me know".

On the basis of the above they paid my pension without further enquiry.

Hope the above is helpful.

Good luck,

I am certain they would accept a certified copy of your marriage certificate done by the department of consular affairs office (same location as the Thai passport office) in Chiang Mai.

Translation of this in Thai under number one here. http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/services/6441/79411-การรับรอง---เอกสารกระทรวงมหาดไทย.html

There is no money to be had from the UK for being married.

Why would you even tell them?

Why would you tell them?

Because they ask on the forms about your marital status, then when you put married they then want proof.

As a matter of interest why do you require a Thai marriage certificate to obtain your UK pension? I recall all those years ago when I first started the application process for my UK pension I was led to believe that I could also claim 60% of my entitlement for my (Thai) wife. As sod's law would have it this all changed the year that I qualified for my pension and I am no longer entitled to anything for my wife. I seem to remember reading about a widow's pension when I die but the entitlement criteria were very complicated and I have not given it any further consideration.

You could send it by Thai Post Tracking Service.  It means the letter is signed for at each stage of it's journey and you are able to look up as to where it has got to, using the code you are given when you hand your letter in to the Post Office.  I have done this successfully three times.

As has been posted, you get nothing for being married to a foreign wife, plus those who are will lose the pension top up in 2 years time..

Think they want to know if you are married in case the future law/payout changes, but that is very doubtful...

I phoned the IPD to ask a couple of questions sorting my claim form out, they were great, l suggest you do the same regarding your dilemma...

 Just lie.

The UK government has no problem lying to us.

I'm single, and I live in the Philippines, job done.

Does this mean that the pension for the likes of me with ADI will decrease in 2020?

So you are saying as i understand it, the extra money i get through being married since July 2009 will stop in 2020? If this is so it is the first i have heard of it!

Correct, the new pensions act 2007 stated that the ADI will be discontinued for new claimants from 2010, those already in receipt at that time will continue to be paid until 2020 when it will cease. I suggest you check gov.uk pensions section.

Thanks John will check it out, no doubt they will stop it at 2020 rate ie. with all the increases that i have not received from being in Thailand since 2015!

When I claimed my pension about 2 years ago I done so by telephone was asked ig I was married and requested my wifes NI number my reply was " she is not British" no further request. I recieve more than the standard rate. I was late claiming so received backdated payment as well.

My experience.

I'm  not sure what you mean by that. After the Adult Dependancy Allowance is discontinued in 2020, you (and I) can look forward to our pension decreasing by the amount of the allowance, which will be the same up to 2020 as it has been since I claimed it in 2009.

In fact they will accept certified copies done by your bank. I also did this for 3 private pensions who all accepted them as email attachments. Kasikorn did several copies of all required documentation (passport, birth certificate etc) free . It was simply their stamp with bank officials signature on a photocopy. For uk state pension claimthey have to be physically posted but on the claim form it specifically states that certified copies including from your bank are accepted . As other posters confirm, there is no benefit to the wife when you die under the new state pension but if you have other occupational or private pensions there is normally a 50% payment  for spouses in that event.

As you know yoir state pension will be frozen at the rate from the date you claim it. You might want to consider delaying your claim until April 2018 when you will benefit from the annual increase under the triple lock amounting to around £5 extra per week . In recognition of the delay in claiming they will also uprate the amount you subsequently receive by the amount (pro rata )of 5.8% for each year unclaimed.

Like Gwynt, i claimed by phone from my British address, and when i said my wife was not British, didn't live in the UK and didn't have a NI number, they didn't ask any more questions about her. Not relevant as she gets nothing from my State pension and i get nothing for being married.
