I reckon firecrackers would work a treat on the chasing dogs; 

Last time I got chased I took the opposite tack, and called out "come on boy, let's go!" and he lost interest quite quickly.  But then, it was daylight at the time.  The dogs here are quite placid and lethargic when the sun is up
