If he was eating pasta, a lot of rice, basically white flour anything, fried foods, heavy sugars, or a lot of alcohol, stopping this would stop the inflammation occurring, which has stopped because of the Keto and lack of refined carbohydrates. Switching to whole grains would not bring the weight back along with that inflammation, so sticking with the Keto, where he is eating carbs but not many, will keep his weight down and the joint pain from re-occurring. I know joint pain, and it's as real as any pain gets, as it occurs when your mind is totally elsewhere, or when you wake up with a burn in your shoulders or knees. I've eaten high carbs all my life, as I was training 4 times a week heavy, but the joint problems came from those heavy weights and not diet, as I rarely ate anything refined the last 50 years. Inflammation is a major problem in most everyone who gets older, and more so if you eat crappy.
