Pictures of a monk out shopping for expensive imported products caused Thais online to wonder about the appropriateness of holy men in robes going out to supermarkets.

The pictures were posted on Facebook by a Rangsit university professor called Smith Tungkasmit who said he often saw monks at the store.

This one casually selected some expensive foreign sausage before putting some equally dear grape juice and other items in his basket.

Sanook said it was not a serious case of breaching Buddhist rules - a bit like a monk buying a coffee.

But it didn't look good, they said, monks should just get alms from the public.

Smith?

Tomorrow he will be going round the poor folk getting money from them that the can ill-afford to give so he can go and buy more expensive food.

Then back at the temple he will throw food given by villagers to the temple dogs.

At least, now Thais know this monk is not Muslim.

Can't blame him, really. Much more filling and satisfying than those titchy home-grown chipolatas.

Why? Could have been beef or lamb sausages.

It's not only monks shopping for foreign sausage...

Maybe he's shopping for a sick person?

In that case the pic is defaming him and he shouldn't accept that.

Maybe, but then all sick people insist on expensive imported products.

I certainly would.

Facebook name, perhaps, as that was where it was posted.  Is Bluespunk your real name?

Why shouldn't they, if they were paying for it but who said it was imported?

Smith?

Facebook name?

Creative dude.

My username reflects my love of 2 powerful music genres.

What does Smith reflect?

Well, after reading news about monks fighting in the street, using illegal drugs and having sex with minors, this one looks pretty innocent to me :coffee1:

What does Smith reflect?

Perhaps, he's the protector of the Matrix together with his buddies Jones and Brown.

To be on the safe site, keep your mobile handy :shock1:

They are not even supposed to touch money or own anything other than robes and bowls, too many are hypocrites these days

You were too late for TWTWTW...otherwise you would have won post of the week hands down. Rooster

Least he did not have his basket with him asking for it as a donation.

Oh I get it. I always thought your username reflected your love for a certain color, among other things.

Actually, anytime I see monks out 'shopping' I simply shake my head.
If monks need to shop, then shed the robes and go shop.

Exactly, Just Weird. Is 'Just Weird' your real name? Is it even your original name on here or was that 'gdgbb'? So many questions.........

From the Buddhist Monastic Code:

"If a bhikkhu engages in buying and selling with money (meaning whatever is used as money), it is [an offence of Confession with Forfeiture.]"(Nis. Paac. 19; Nv p.11)

The article said, foreign sounds like inported to me.

Was there ever any doubt? A Muslim wearing saffron robes would be offending  Allah..

Asked 'why', he replied: "Thais' sausages too small!"

I assume that religion here will go the same way as in western Europe, where most of the young population are not interested in it any longer. In my country you only see old people in the churches, very few young ones.

Up to him; if those folk are so uninformed, not following the TVF...
